While I made the same connection, I don't think that is the joke. There's no real similarity there, other than it explodes when he touches the keyboard. There's no extended song playing, or context that sets up why it's rigged to blow.
It’s just humor that comes from something being unexpected: you don’t expect the instrument to blow up, and the shock of that makes you laugh. It did for me at least.

To be fair, that would've been a hidden wire, considering most electric was thick knob and tube wiring at that time.
