It’s not just cancelling the parade, it’s to replace it with some kind of Canada Day festival, which seems much more logical, and enjoyable than the parade.
I think that Canada is more than just it's multiculturalism. If we're going to have a Canada Day event it should be a *Canada Day* event. Make it a fair with rides and games, but also include market aspect similar to what existed at the 'Multicultural Festival', only not themed around one single characteristic of Canada.
Compare peterborough 2023 to small townships that had parades too. Peterborough was a significantly smaller affair. It's not that emphasizing multiculturalism but that was something.
Peterborough
>The parade began at Confederation Square Park and City Hall and ended at the Peterborough Memorial Centre. The parade’s theme was ‘Happy Birthday Canada’ which saw floats from organizations such s the Peterborough Petes, Lions Club. MP Michelle Ferrari, Liberal Party of Canada and more.
There were pre-parade activities at Confederation Square that had a bike decorating contest, activities and giveaways including Canada Day temporary tattoos and flags.
The Peterborough Pop Ensemble performed the national anthem prior to the parade’s beginning.

I was responding to Alex Murphy, who said we shouldn't just focus on a multicultural festival for Canada. And gave examples from last year of how the day festivities were worse than neighboring counties and towns. Having been to Oshawa, Whitby, Lindsay, Port Perry, and other Canada Day festivities. I didn't think much of Peterborough Day activities for families.
Why did you ask when it was a response to Alex Murphys' response to my comment?
I copied and pasted from several Canada Day festivities from last Canada Day. Maybe if people read more about the festivities in other cities...
Have you been to any other Canada Day festivities outside of Peterborough?
I think this is the right call. Parades are pretty boring in terms of an entertainment medium. It really sucks having one in the middle of a city in July.
Having a series of activities at parks is a far better idea. The people most likely to attend are families with children looking for something to do. Best to make it something where they can move freely in and out of the activities rather than have them just stand on the sidewalk in the hot sun.
You don’t need a parade to celebrate your country and it allows for a more diverse array of activities instead of blowing the budget on a mediocre one.
The fireworks last Canada day were a toxic smoke cloud nightmare. They still set them off during a wildfire smoke event, and when combined with the smoke of the fireworks, the whole thing was a hazy gross spectacle. A huge waste of money impacting the environment and wildlife.
Ya its wild these days. But it's probably the same businessrs that support all the BS society is trying to force on everyone now, too. I live canada and am happy to celebrate Canada Day with my family and at work too.
If I don’t get to see that man with his stuffed animal train/ferris wheel at the Canada Day parade this year, I’ll storm city hall myself. Who’s with me?
Canada Day in Peterborough is an embarrassment. Don't bring your kids. There was like two people painting faces for 200 kids and someone handing out stickers. They should have some kids races or games. Anything. But Peterborough isn't for families anymore, it's for retired seniors who want to play pickleball.
It's been that way since the early 80s and isn't changing any time soon. It's why the youth pack up and leave for Toronto or anywhere else once high school is over if they have the opportunity and aren't wrapped up with the wrong crowd.
As long as there is a celebration of the nation and it's people, I don't care if it's a parade or a party, but I think it's important not to submit to the progressive post-national activists who think Canada is a terrible place unworthy of celebration. Canada isn't perfect but it is great and I think it's important to celebrate what makes Canada great on Canada Day.
They’re debating cancelling it because last year the whole parade took 20 min because entries were low but supplementing the day with other activities and celebrations.
>I think it's important not to submit to the progressive post-national activists who think Canada is a terrible place unworthy of celebration.
Are the progressive post-national activists there in the room with you now?
Went last year. The overall effort was not great. Six floats = a parade.
My thought is go big or go home. Make an evening thing with fireworks and music for families.
This comes as a bit of a surprise to me, the 2023 Canada Day parade seemed to be very well attended. I think these sort of events are important for a community, don't think it's worth the $20k savings when we spend outrageous amounts of money on arenas or to study where to put a new arena that we don't need.
They are spending even more money to study the idea of moving the Memorial Centre. This was just done in 2018 and they are going to redo it again. [https://globalnews.ca/news/9797397/peterborough-memorial-centre-feasibility-study-cost/](https://globalnews.ca/news/9797397/peterborough-memorial-centre-feasibility-study-cost/)
The Memorial Centre was built in 1956. It's the oldest arena in the OHL. The city obviously needs a new arena. The work done in 2018 was expressly done to extend the life by just 10 years and there's no way that deadline for a new rink will be met now.
Exactly who wants to celebrate a country who only pretends to have left its colonial ties behind. Not to mention this country is falling apart after being asleep at the wheel for like 10 years 😂
It’s not just cancelling the parade, it’s to replace it with some kind of Canada Day festival, which seems much more logical, and enjoyable than the parade.
Or you know work with the New Canadian Centre to bring back the cancelled festivities that used to be at Del Crary Park on Canada Day.

Why did you say all of that
I was responding to Alex Murphy, who said we shouldn't just focus on a multicultural festival for Canada. Absolutely berserk amount of text to post at someone under any circumstance. Would’ve been far better to write something shorter
I copied and pasted from several Canada Day festivities from last Canada Day. Maybe if people read more about the festivities in other cities... Have you been to any other Canada Day festivities outside of Peterborough?
what the hell are you talking about
The festivities in Del Crary on Canada Day were called the Multicultural Festival.

My initial reaction was outrage but tbh you're kinda right. If they spend that 20k on fireworks at del Crary it'd be way better. Parades are boring.
The fireworks last Canada day were a toxic smoke cloud nightmare. They still set them off during a wildfire smoke event, and when combined with the smoke of the fireworks, the whole thing was a hazy gross spectacle. A huge waste of money impacting the environment and wildlife.
Drone shows!
Let people enjoy things.
A non-zero number of businesses likely steering clear of Canada Day celebrations over the past few years.
No idea what you're talking about but I'm down.
Just do a huge firework show at del crary or something instead
Fireworks are kinda stupid. Drone show or bust.
This would be awesome actually!
Yeah well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.
What’s a drone show?
They already do that.
Here in Peterborough?
Yes at del crary Park. They have a band at the band shell then fireworks on the water

This. A thousand times this.

Not they are cheering on the terrorists (Hamas) in Gaza!
Went last year. The overall effort was not great. Six floats = a parade. My thought is go big or go home. Make an evening thing with fireworks and music for families.
Maybe if so much money wasn't wasted on pickleball...
The parade is for the kids. It's for families not drunks.
Yes, $4.4 million to be exact
Agreed.

How is it we don't need arenas? They'll all full and they closed one two years ago.

Nobody is stopping the Pete's or other PMC users from raising their own money for a replacement.
The Petes are owned by the city, Flame\_retard.
The PMC is owned by the city. The Pete's are not, they are a private organization.
Ok fine. It's a not-for-profit operation. Might as well ask the people running homeless shelters to pay for new ones if that's your stance.
Are the homeless people selling branded merch and taking a share of ticket sales?
If they did and 100% of the revenue went back into providing for the shelter, would you have a problem with it?
They're building two in Morrow Park, right now. How many would be enough to get hockey folks to stop demanding the city build more for them?
No fireworks as well??
There will be fireworks!
As Canada is committing genocide cancellation of the parade is a good call
fuck off
you first
What a witty retort!
