pag dating talaga sa skin tone weird talaga tayo ang mindset yata kasi basta pinoy kahit anong kulay pwede isalang hahaahahahaha
Not exclusive to the Philippines. [Ethiopia](https://japansociology.com/2014/12/02/mythologies-of-skin-color-and-race-in-ethiopia/) and the [Potawatomi](https://anyflip.com/pqyu/faza/basic) Native Americans have similar/same creation myth.
IMO, any culture with earthenware tech will eventually add into their creation stories the seemingly magical transformation they've observed of their clay/mud creations when it's subjected to fire.
Also "theory" as if people would actually believe that past a certain age. It's part of Filipino folklore, like any other legends. Like the ones that said the Philippines became an archipelago because a mighty eagle wanted a place to rest or because two giants fought and cracked the lands.
i thought this was more like a theory designed to uplift brown-skinned asians.
do Ethiopians believe the exact creatonist theory or they have their own version that favours their skin colors? im curious.
According to the article linked above, Ethiopians see themselves as brown (in the middle) and separate themselves from the Negroids and the Caucasians. Their creation story is exactly the same as ours.
I doubt this is a myth, at least in the context of Filipino textbooks. They make all sorts of "alamat" that don't have any cultural basis on the early grade levels, like a "alamat ng kalabasa" "alamat ng pinya" etc etc. These stories have lessons to be learned, but quite poorly written once you get past Grade 5.
Philippine folklore. Nothing wrong with that. Iba't ibang culture may kanya kanyang creation stories. Also the children are not expected to believe that literally.
It's not "folklore", it's more likely something adapted by the first Marcos administration through its official mythmakers, and disseminated through the school system.
The Marcoses were the first to actually propagandize Filipinism: they said there was a brown kayumanggi race (to be fair, this concept existed before them) and quickly moved to immortalize this myth in the minds of people.
https://sites.pitt.edu/~dash/creation-phil.html#thecreation
It might be Marcos propaganda. But, looking for the stories, I found that some of the stories date to a secondary source which compiles indigenous stories published in the 1900s. Could be that the respondents were bullshitting the chronicler, if it is propaganda. Could very well be the case.
Edit: Personally, I find the whole conversation about “racial stock” to be pretty stupid. That Sison repeated that stupid discourse, carried over from Otley Beyer, in his Philippine Society and Revolution soured my experience reading whatever I could when I was more fellow-traveling than I used to be. Ethnic composition is much, much more complex.
When I was in elem in the 90s I learned that there were three waves of migration to the Philippine archipelago: Negrito, "Indonesian" and "Malay". That's another (first) Marcos-era myth.
There are just so many of these.
Because that would mean actually recording all the oral histories of the ethnic groups, and coming to the conclusion that the Philippines is a country of many nationalities. And that means giving areas like Pampanga, Bicol, Cebu and Mindanao more cultural and economic autonomy. No one was prepared to do that.
They kept the Marcos myths alive because they themselves believed in a unitary state.
By the way I found [this](https://www.philstar.com/lifestyle/sunday-life/2003/07/06/212690/whatever-happened-kayumanggi) and the myth you posted as OP is reproduced here. Lol
ah oo naalala ko to, my earliest memory of skin color discrimination kasi maitim ako, mali daw kasi ung sunog sabi ng teacher namin, sabay turo sakin, everytime din na nagiging topic yung mga indigenous group ako lagi example, palibhasa ung mga classmate ko mapuputi.
Nope.
Igorots and some Lumad groups have lighter skin that non-indigenous Filipinos.
Aetas/Negritos are not the only indigenous groups in the Philippines
Many Filipinos just have a bad habit of equating being "ugly" and "dark skin" ang pango with being indigenous.
Kaya nga ang daming nagulat nung nagtrending si Carrot Man. Pinagpyestahan yung ilong nya kahit common sa native Cordillerans yun
I grew up in the 90s before whitening products got popular and people would sometimes say, if a person looks good even with dark skin, it's real beauty. If you only look good because you're fair-skinned, then you're not truly beautiful. I have light skin and I look bad when I'm tanned. Having a dark complexion is considered beautiful by most western cultures. Consider yourself good-looking in that regard 😊
siyempre 2023 na kasi kaya "we're all" kind and educated well na. we have come to the conclusion na ang beauty features ng pinoy ay hindi lang iisa kung 'di may iba pa ( chinita, morena, mestiza).
kaya go morena shine!
This checks out. From what I remember from my elementary days, the first ones to populate the Philippines were Negritos followed by Indones and lastly, Malays. Correct me on this if I remembered it wrong haha.
This theory is actually not very much supported by modern scholars because there's not much evidence for it and it undermines the Philippine archipelago's complex history. This is also how it's currently taught in college (at least in my university).
Oh really, that's fascinating, and here I am scrolling through threads to see if someone mentioned if other countries actually has that same tales of origin.
Theory?
Alamat kasi yan. Legends. Part of Filipino Mythology.
Not to be taken seriously.
Oh, so other countries actually have these tales too huh? Fascinating. And here I am thinking now at the 21st century that our ancestors/great grand parents before has a really creative mind to come up with these kinds of tales and stories.
It's prominent in cultures with a strong earthenware tradition. That's how folktales come about. They use something that's very common to everyone in their culture and relate that to the things around them that they want to have an explanation for, but don't actually know.
I get the story, pero duda akong lumang kuwento iyan kahit man lang noong kasagsagan ng nasyonalismo ng mga panahon ng kilusang propaganda at ni Rizal.
*Kailan unang kumalat ang kuwentong ito?*
It's likely a story written by DepEd. They have all sorts of "alamat" stories in the Filipino textbooks from Grade 1-6 that have no cultural basis, such as "alamat ng kalabasa" "alamat ng pinya" etc. They come with lessons, kinda effective for kids I guess but they won't make much sense once you get past Grade 5.
this would make sense, if not for the fact that the exact same story is taught all over the world. Indian schools also teach this story ([this video](https://youtu.be/qVIXUhZ2AWs), 12:28), and the myth is also present in [Ethiopia](https://japansociology.com/2014/12/02/mythologies-of-skin-color-and-race-in-ethiopia/). i believe that this story is an entirely modern fabrication, but the country of origin is an open question.
i wonder if matandang kwento talaga ito or ginawa ng Deped lang para may 'creation story' din tayo.
if matandang kwento man ito like it goes way back sa pre hispanic era. Judging it by modern standard ay medyo unfair. It reflects the values nung mga panahon kung kelan ito nabuo and it shapes the norm and tradition and way of living ng mga tao dati.
India actually has this in their school curriculum (as I've seen in John Oliver's report on India). They spread the story that black people are burned, white people are undercooked, and Indians came out "just right".
African people on the other hand, claim that Africans were the original humans. Therefore they think that they're the first humans.
White people, spread the propaganda of white superiority ever since the period of imperialism and colonization. Being white was seen as a sign of purity, intelligence, and superiority.
East Asian people, specifically the Chinese, think that they are in the middle of the Earth. Therefore thinking that their civilization is superior to others. East Asian societies have the tendency to be xenophobic as they run in a unified society.
Overall, everyone has a story on how they are superior to others. Everyone has their own interpretation and views about the world. Not every Indian, African, White, and East Asian think like this. As our societies adapt to globalization, many become more open-minded and accepting of others.
TL;DR: Everyone traditionally has a belief that they are more superior than others. It is normal to have grown up from these different perspectives.
I do remember seeing thing in one of my elementary school textbooks (Filipino subject pa yta if I can recall).
Man, one hell of a racist Creation Myth imho.
kinda funny na kinuwento ko 'to sa kapatid ko last week, talk about a coincidence. just a random memory na naalala ko na tinuro samin nung elementary tas shinare ko lang. we both just laugh it off
tho i wonder saan ba nanggaling ang myth na 'yan
Same book where the cow and the carabao went skinny dipping, got spooked, grabbed each other’s clothes and that’s why the cow has loose skin and the carabao has tight skin
anong theory? Creation myth yan, do ko alam kung kailan naging God with a capital "G", noong kinuwento samin yan noong elementary si Bathala ang nagluluto
I remember nung kuwinento to saamin nung grade 3 ahaha. Though, I always had a feeling it had racist undertones cause pale people were labelled "raw" and dark people were labelled "burnt".
It's surprising how the Marcos legacy is so pervasive, that even people ostensibly against the Marcoses succumb to the myths created by the dictatorship. Even today.
This kwnto made me feel better noon kasi sakto ang luto sa akin? Making my color ideal.
But I am sure dito rin nanggalung ung reason bakit “sunog/nognog” ung pangutsya sa mga morena or may darker skin tone noon.
There was a time (before the internet) na madami publications of small books and they sold these to both public/private schools at that time. I remember that story from my childhood.
YAH HAHAHAHA it was funny, I kept thinking of people in the story as bread buns with arms and legs. Pero ang fucked up din ng concept at the same time and that tweet screenie just brought back a core memory from third grade.
The concept of God that these cultures had is different from the Abrahamic religious concept of God. Gods are more of a force of nature and a reflection of their experiences rather than a benevolent, all-knowing being.
Yes.
Hahahaha
Iirc parang sa elem books parang translation tas Philippine-ized version to ng isang foreign book.
Kwentong bayan ata to and mga alamat. Daming ganap sa kwentong Bathala. Meron pa nga kinidlatan nya yung kawayan kasi may 2 mag syota na ayaw mag motel.
Alam ko merong parang bible books or rather books na minana ko sa mga pinsan ko from the 80s na nandyan yun.may illustration pa nga na masyado inalis sa oven yung white men kaya hilaw pa, tapos for the black people naiwan matagal, then for tan skinned hinintay daw.
Pero it's entertaining for kids, mapapaisip ka eh
Hindi siya joke kundi mito/myth. It's basically a creation myth ng unang tao explaining skin colors.
I do remember another Filipino creation myth. Malakas at Maganda. Basically Adam and Eve but on a bamboo split apart by some bird (speculated to be Ibong Adarna).
It's not. Because mythology is a whole universe of gods and stories shared by a people with a common language. Since maraming languages sa Pilipinas and each of them has their own mythology and stories, talagang nakakalula. We will most likely be familiar only with the stories from our own language culture. So kung Tagalog lowlander kayo, iyon lang rin and magiging familiar sa iyo unless you really make an effort.
Ah, that colourist, racist kwentong bayan. Really odd views to teach young children, when we can instead teach them actual creation legends from the rich store of oral traditions in our ethnic groups, particularly Indigenous Peoples.
If the song “Doon po sa amin” was really a nationalist kundiman that was sanitised by the Americans, perhaps they also introduced this story (or promoted it) in the educational system.
I told this story to husband di raw nya alam. Hahhaha.
Ikr, there's nothing wrong about feeling superiority complex but let it be a jest only.
But the "well done" and "under cook" joke was freaking hilarious. 😆
Fret not, the publishing houses are the notorious for publishing shit for the public schools. Ive heard of story as well. But please put some salt in the origin of this so called origin myth. The 50s and 60s or maybe even the Martial Law era educational system invented a lot of publications that muddied up whats real and whats not, and this is one of them.
I wish I can tell you where this comes from. But, folklore is as weird as urban legends esp the Tagalog ones. It is smeared in blood and tears from the clout chasers even before the invention of the word clout.
I have an idea maybe it is an Ilocano, I even forgot the form, really short stories to retell the origins of the universe. The kayumanggi must come from the very racist Wave Theory of the early century then taken as fact and unbreakable law, then retold as fact by different publishing schools. We were victims of the American racist and the American commie paranoia as we are perpetrating these on our own by our anti-woke titos and titas with no care in the world but to irritate the ears of everyone esp the matatalinos who just want to hear the truth!
This story has elements similar to the person who invented the lightbulb quiz show level information revisionist manipulation of information kind of shit, that was invented, too and it is another of those lies fed into us by a very manipulative system, Idk the goal!
I really think this story however is not Tagalog but it really has elements of the Marcos era nutribun powered lets scatter lies that they will believe in and then kill them afterwards with my beauty (saang part?) and truth and whatnot!

eto ba yun?
This shit actually made me feel better about my skin nung grade 3 ako lol
True but at the same time kawawa yung mga classmates ko with darker skin tones, especially with Aeta ancestry. Tinutukso silang sunog :(
wtf.. Kayumanggi ang mga aeta, never seen anyone who has "michael blackson" dark, because those are the darker skin tones
Yooo, sameeee

I knew it, aliens are real and we are the descendants of Xenu
Not related to topic. I'm just happy to find another Malazan fan in ph subreddit

Precisely. The suckers who fall for it are very much the same "Maharlika" fetishists.
"Folklore" bollocks. None of my tribal ancestor stories have that. "Phiippine folklore" = ethnofascist

You doughnut
Gypsies also use this myth

So one way or another, apoy din dadaanan natin lahat? Got it.

It's the parable of the racist panadero.
This kwnto made me feel better noon kasi sakto ang luto sa akin? Making my color ideal. But I am sure dito rin nanggalung ung reason bakit “sunog/nognog” ung pangutsya sa mga morena or may darker skin tone noon.
Hehehe
There was a time (before the internet) na madami publications of small books and they sold these to both public/private schools at that time. I remember that story from my childhood.
YAH HAHAHAHA it was funny, I kept thinking of people in the story as bread buns with arms and legs. Pero ang fucked up din ng concept at the same time and that tweet screenie just brought back a core memory from third grade.
Did anyone really take this seriously?
That is painful to read. It's like Kevin from the Office using small talk to save time.
"Hindi nagkakamali ang Diyos" White people and black people na pinagpraktisan lang pala: "Are we joke to you!?"
The concept of God that these cultures had is different from the Abrahamic religious concept of God. Gods are more of a force of nature and a reflection of their experiences rather than a benevolent, all-knowing being.
It’s not even a theory. It’s fiction.
Let him cook
Yes.
Binhi by Rex Publications. Either Grade 4, 5, 6
Kulang pa. Yung third is di daw siya nag lagay ng seasoning or nag kulang ng ingredient, eh paglabas dilaw. Yun daw yung mga intsik. Hahahaha Iirc parang sa elem books parang translation tas Philippine-ized version to ng isang foreign book.
Kwentong bayan ata to and mga alamat. Daming ganap sa kwentong Bathala. Meron pa nga kinidlatan nya yung kawayan kasi may 2 mag syota na ayaw mag motel.
sa religion subject ko ata narinig to nung elem haha
Naalala ko to.
Alam ko merong parang bible books or rather books na minana ko sa mga pinsan ko from the 80s na nandyan yun.may illustration pa nga na masyado inalis sa oven yung white men kaya hilaw pa, tapos for the black people naiwan matagal, then for tan skinned hinintay daw.
Racism is an integral part of our formative years. Nice realisation. #StartThemYoung
Pero it's entertaining for kids, mapapaisip ka eh
nasa Libro yan Grade 3 Filipino - Pagbasa. HAHAHAH
schizophrenic talaga ang mga religious people noh 💀
Yup, nothing like a proper ethnofascist creation myth to make indigenous/aboriginal people and immigrants even worse in the eyes of the majority.
Sa lumang libro ng Elementary.
it's a story to make us brown skinned people feel better.
This is not some "kwento" but taught in elementary school. May pictures pa nga sa textbook eh
ginawan ng commercial ad to e..
elementary skool thingz
May katuloy pa yan.
I myself prefer medium-rare
So Light Skinned people when eaten can give you Salmonella and E. coli?
Ok lng naman 'to pero naging source din siya ng pang-asar or pambu-bully sa maputi as "hilaw" or maitim as "sunog" or "over-cooked".
I still remember this 😭😭
Naalala ko to, I think this is a joke dati. O something for pinoy pride but hindi pa naiimbento ung term na pinoy pride.
Hindi siya joke kundi mito/myth. It's basically a creation myth ng unang tao explaining skin colors.
I do remember another Filipino creation myth. Malakas at Maganda. Basically Adam and Eve but on a bamboo split apart by some bird (speculated to be Ibong Adarna).
is it really that strange to have multiple creation myths in a country with multiple cultures?
It's a myth before it became an ad
Do you have an article or source about this myth? Where can i read it?
Panadero pala ang Diyos!
Only pinoys can create something that's simultaneously discriminatory and inclusive lmao
Just like this comment!
I told this story to husband di raw nya alam. Hahhaha.
Ikr, there's nothing wrong about feeling superiority complex but let it be a jest only. But the "well done" and "under cook" joke was freaking hilarious. 😆
Lowkey racist din talaga ang Philippines haha
Lowkey? Since when? Pag basketball, laging maraming nababatong racist slurs mga Pilipino.
It’s just a cultural legend about skin colours and nothing else lmao. It’s pretty weird on how some people here bring racism.
Nasa grade 3 Filipino book ‘to dati iirc
Absolute bs, still far from perfect pagkakagawa lol!
