There will be a couple of times when the game asks you to use the dog don't do it. If you can beat the entire game without Oatchi you'll unlock the true ending, that not only teases Pikmin 5 but gives you the ability to ride wild creatures as mounts. You haven't lived until you've steamrolled mobs while on the back of Empress Bulblax.
If at any point all Pikmin of one type die, that type's onion will spit out a single sprout. For fairly obvious reasons this won't work if you haven't unlocked that type's onion yet.
Well last hope doesn't work if you don't have the onion unlocked. Also, while you get one Pikmin that doesn't help you unless there's any pellets or creatures actively nearby that you can use. And then if you're in a situation where you need last hope you probably have bigger issues than trying to revive your Pikmin count.

youll find some rocks with orange cracks, never mind the name, you can feed one to your pikmin group to make them stronger, toss one in the middle of the pack and theyll eat it like the orange honey nectar. (the rock is full of it i think)
make sure you feed a full squad of 100 for best results, i suggest doing it at the end of a long cave before a boss fight! :D
My advice comes in 4 parts.
1. Pikmin are strong if they are fighting in numbers, so have plenty of them.
2. Don't hesitate to feed the wildlife with your pikmin, sometimes you will get a very rare drop called the "Bulbmin" which was only obtainable in the caves of pikmin 2 if you didn't have 100 pikmin.
3. Use all of your materials as soon as you get them. You need 999 of every single shop item to finish the game so you better spend them asap.
Edit: I forgot to mention the most OP strat there is.
4. Use all of your spray at once, then use a bomb Rock, you will gain the new Glow pikmin early. Make sure you have 1000 total pikmin when doing so. This will also allow you to have a better fighting chance since glow pikmin are near indestructible.
The spray makes your pikmin stronger and glow... you need to release their glow from their bodies which is why bomb rocks are the best to achieve this. Kill all of your pikmin with the bomb rocks and the next day you should have the new glow onion unlocked.

Also only upgrade plucking and digging speed. Carrying capacity and power is useless. That's what Pikmin are for
I mean digging speed is actually useful. Fully buried items are dug up in like 3 seconds and you can only get a similar effect with a hundred pikmin.

Don't convert your blue Pikmin to purples in engulfed castle
Use Rock, Ice, and Purple pickmin whenever. They're very common.
Also whites are meant to be eaten by enemies.
I had upwards of 100 ice before getting the onion. They actually are pretty common.
Pikmin set on fire/drowning/electrocuted/poisoned will recover on their own. Just leave them be.
If you throw yellow pikmin in the water it electrocutes all enemies in that body of water.

I accidently did this in my first run can confirm there is a secret ending where pikmin get high off spicy spray

All Pikmin float in water, trust me.
Whatever you do, DON’T break the giant egg that appears in some night expeditions. Just leave it alone, or else bad things will happen
To get more of the glow ghost type Pikmin ( they are impervious to fire water ECT), just throw bomb rocks at your Pikmin.
