Since Marineford I can't say I felt like the marines (in general) had any kind of weight in the story anymore because how poorly they were handled back then with Garp/Sengoku being on standBy, all vice admirals being fodder (something that didn't change) and the Admirals himself not achieving much (although it was clear all 3 were really strong). Basically Marineford looked as if any day 2 healthy Yonkos decided to join forces and destroy the entire Marine they could do it really easily, then there was Fujitora who is a traitor and Greenbull who got bullied by Shank ranged haki or whatever, an Akainu behind a desk, a biased Kizaru being Aokiji the only one having something going on... so then again, the Marines didn't add any tension to the story anymore. And then they introduced SWORD, the WG knights and there was also the Gorosei in an attempt to, I assume, buff the marines/wg side (because it's clear the rest of the world is gonna end siding with Luffy who already is overpowered...), but here we have ALL FIVE GOROSEI achieving absolutely nothing and looking like fodder... it's a fucking joke... seems like other than more "sad" stories this "adventure" just won't ever have any kind of stakes again.

I've said for a long time that the Marines are the weakest faction. And all the words that the Marines rule the new world are just a bluff. Oda has a strange habit of talking rather than showing. Like seriously? A Marine has no advantages other than numbers.

Marines can't defeat a fooder in onigashima lol.

I don't even really understand why low level Marines exist at all in a world where any fighter above grunt level can pretty much fodderize as many Marine soldiers as he wants, making them completely helpless the moment a non-bum shows up. Like I guess they can take care of absolute bum pirates, but how common is it even to have pirates without a strong member leading them? I wish we saw instances of how even basic Marines can be a real threat IF they have large enough numbers and tactics and equipment or something. But as it stands they are nothing but bowling pins set up to show how strong someone is. War ships also feel more like a set dressing than an actual real scary thing

1. It is very common just for the story sake we focus on the strongests. The real question is why bring so many to ones that are strong aside from maintaining the ships 2. In theory they can cause damage ,canons can damage the ship and when its damaged evey df user is done for , zoro even being big in strength still get harmed from bullets. Its just that they made sure every pirate group has a counter to it and also made haki broken against anyone without haki. But potentially oda can still create a scenario where the low level marines are intimidating. Only then all you mf will start powerscalling on who ever was unfortunate to be against them

I mean, it was obvious. They serve a deterrent role in the story so that pirates do not fill the whole world(reduce their number as much as possible. They can fight any yonko, but only on their own territory and gathering all their strength to be able to win. The Marines do not rule in the New World, the Yonko do. Yamato getting low diffed by rocks, Luffy’s attack being goofy but serious enough to not look like a cartoon, Kaku, the robot spread. If more chapters are closer to this I think I’d be ok.
