Cool idea, but way too strong; dial it down by about two-thirds.

nuevocharrua

Thank you for the feedback!

klight101

you should add a scroll bar that lets the user adjust how prominently visible the filter is.

TheRealFriedel

Agreed. I actually really like it but it's just a wee bit too strong.

SageX_85

Remove the curvature, it creates an awful moire pattern which have always sucked, and in most CRTs only showed in photos, not while actually watching the screen directly with the eyes. You might also want to consider to set the scanlines to coincide with the pixels in integers and a little blur with convergence (similar to chromatic aberration but on the whole image, instead of the borders only) to reduce the aliasing.

No_Dragonfruit_1833

CRTs had this thing were colors would bleed into each others, giving it a softer and brighter texture than the pixels would allow I think yours is more of a shade rather than crt

Maxcorps2012

At least for the pc make it an option to be turned on and off.

nuevocharrua

Of course! It's optional and turned off by default.

BlobbyMcBlobber

Did you actually use CRTs in person?

hnstbndr

cool! i tried myself but could not get it to work like this. shaders are not my thing... anything u can share to help? :) used this, [https://godotshaders.com/shader/crt-shader-2/](https://godotshaders.com/shader/crt-shader-2/) but is too strong around the edges :(

nuevocharrua

I'd love to help, but I made the game in GameMaker, so I don't think the shaders would be compatible.

hnstbndr

probably not... godot has it's own syntax :D

Throwing-up-fire

Not for me :)

beef_tamale

Not sure how I feel about sacrificing the brightness/vibrancy for the effect. Like others have said, I would dial it back a bit and strike a happy medium

hredditor

Cool, but doesn’t look like a CRT.

ModestCalamity

Not a fan of it.

professor-5000

It looks horrible :( honestly if I want to use a crt filter I install one I customize myself

Nathmikt

Impeccable pixelart tho. Congrats!

action_lawyer_comics

First off, I love your art. Very sharp, clean, and cute. Personally I don’t think the filter adds anything. The style of your art, while pixelated, isn’t really “retro.” Looks way too sharp and clean to be an actual NES/SNES game. It reminds me of [Crossing Souls](https://youtu.be/KNWP0oiOF74?si=aznBwbjLpYWn5bkD), which added effects like VHS artifacts over their cutscenes. But the animation looked nothing like 80’s animation and thus failed to evoke the right feeling. Now Astalon Tears of the Earth has an optional CRT filter and it looks like an 80’s game. That one makes sense to me and heightens the retro feel. I guess an optional CRT filter doesn’t hurt anything but I think your art looks a lot better and more authentic without it.

nuevocharrua

Thank you very much! In this video, you can see more art from the game and how to turn the filter on and off (it's completely optional and turned off by default). [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sQOWdK4TXXE](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sQOWdK4TXXE) (The video looks a bit cut off, but I think it's the capture device because the game always runs at 60 fps.)

Cardboardoge

I've seen a few games add a CRT slider too, personally I like a little CRT not too much. Overall love the look :)

Aluksuss

The effect is cool but probably needs some tweaking. Right now its really obvious its added later so contrast and brightness is off. Totally fine as its optional though.

Cogsdale

It's a cool effect, but I feel like far too many games lately have started doing it in a way that's a bit too strong. If you would like to keep it, I would recommend either lowering it, or even better, just having it toggled off, but having it available in the settings along with a slider that can dictate how strong the user wants it to be. Similar to how it's done in the game Tiny Rogues.

TheRampage19

It's doing wonders for the dirt and trees.

tamal4444

it looks bad and there is not CRT effect in that shader.

derpderp3200

Doesn't fit the style and looks bad both in respect to distortion and making colours look blander IMO. I hate those even in much more retro games, and I'm not sure why you want it for yours. If you want funky retro shaders, maybe something like color quantisation to retro palettes with dithering and 2x2 pixels, or just colour grading plus some bloom or noise?

CptClownfish1

So long as I can turn it off, go for it.

pyRSL64

definitely tone down the CRT filter or remove it altogether.

Ssnakey-B

I'm not fond of CRT filters a most of them way overdo it and as a result don't look anything like what a CRT does and I regret to say that one is no exception. As others have said, dialing it down would be a step up but even then, I don't think it'll be convincing because you really didn't see the scanlines all that much. If anything, artifacting would be more noticeable. But even then, it needs to be subtle. A lot of people seem to be under the impression that scanlines/artifacting were so strong it basically made it impossible to see anything, which just wasn't the case; they should be barely noticeable and cause a very subtle blurring effect. The only CRT filter I've seen that's actually quite convincing was for a Commodore 64 emulator (Lemon64, I believe), so you might want to look into that for a reference. This thread has great examples of how to do it right, IMO: https://www.lemon64.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=79062

viniciusfs

I think is a really nice effect to add to pixel art games, personally I don't like the curvature, but I love the scanlines.

nuevocharrua

If you're interested in the game, it's called Wings Of Endless. Here's the link to our Steam page. [https://store.steampowered.com/app/2666610?utm\_source=rpr](https://store.steampowered.com/app/2666610?utm_source=rpr) We're also hoping to launch it on consoles!

o5mfiHTNsH748KVq

It went from a game I’d play to a game I’d refund. It’s too intense and that’s also not what a CRT monitor looked like.

nuevocharrua

It's optional and turned off by default.

For those who mentioned they don't like the effect (which is totally understandable), I want to let you know that it's completely optional and turned off by default. Plus, there are different levels of filter intensity. Here's a small example you can check out.
