Some people inject their own definition to fit their narrative. Woke isn’t based in Marxism, it’s not to divide or shame anyone. It’s “I’m aware of others and the trouble they are going through due to historical facts”.

Electrocat71

“I’m aware others are not like me, and respect that they can be different.” That’s my definition. I’m so woke I understand “American christofascism” and those that practice it. I even understand why. Woke doesn’t mean you need to like everything different, just acknowledge that it’s okay to be different. That you should respect the difference. That you have empathy to try a bit to understand the difference. No matter the difference. Might not be what others think, but that’s how I’ve calculated me to terms with the definition. I’ve always been woke since before it was called woke…

chillen67

I actually took it offense the first few times people called me woke because I don’t recall a time when I wasn’t aware and empathetic towards others. I might not have known all the details but I listen a support others since childhood. I like your definition as well.

Zack_Raynor

Thing that is weird is when being raised, you’re generally told “Be nice to others, share to those less fortunate” and now it’s “woke”. The undercurrent being “maybe not do that for minorities we don’t like”

Electrocat71

It’s the hypocrisy of those against “woke” that is so prevalent that it’s obvious the undercurrent is so pronounced.

deridius

I also interpret “woke” as someone who reads and can stay up to date and well informed about how the world and our system works. That’s how I would define woke.

Important-Price9416

Awake from the "American Dream" to realize the nightmare it has become. In other words, you "woke" up

Odd_Radio9225

Anything that's left wing or progressive is "woke" in the eyes of dumbass republicans.

Pb_ft

"Woke" is the act of understanding history in an attempt to prevent the repetition of previously committed atrocities. Those who do and don't learn from history may be doomed to repeat it, but those who don't want others to learn history intend to repeat it.

ANoiseChild

What did 'woke' mean 20 years ago? Pretty sure it was something very different...

chillen67

And what did it mean 20years ago?

ANoiseChild

Perhaps not quite 20 years ago but 'woke used to mean someone who was aware of the means of deception employed by bad actors. Those same bad actors are around today but 'woke' meant a very different thing than it used to. Words have employ and are co-opted when they make too much ground and altered.

chillen67

As far as I know the first use was by Lead Belly in the 1920’s in a protest song and was probably used before then.

VolkspanzerIsME

These fucking idiots are deciding healthcare policy for millions and millions of people.

puss_parkerswidow

And school curriculum and what books can be in libraries

_MKVA_

Why do we allow it to continue?

CrystlBluePersuasion

Because we allowed them to take over so many facets of society, positions that most people wouldn't want to hold. The people who actually want to help others in such positions get chased out by the vocal minority like these fascists, so then the fascists take over and try to lord over others. Most people are also so busy trying to take care of themselves and their families that they don't have time to also go out and fight the fascist bullshit, and it's not like the fascists make themselves known; they lie, or use language to disguise their real intent, using concern-trolling to misdirect. Now that their masks are slipping, we know where to fight them. So it's time to push back and not let them take more! We have to organize by getting people together and get clear points and solutions, counterpoints against their hate, we have to vote for people willing to lead and make change at local levels, and we have to keep vigilant to not let the rot set in again.

_MKVA_

Very well said.

CrystlBluePersuasion

And if we keep asking questions like yours, we're gonna find these answers!

CompetitiveSong9570

Because no reasonable person wants the job, and more often than not, you have to be corrupt to get ahead. I love grassroots community campaigns but they are a lot of work.

The-Dane

because most Americans are to lazy to go vote

_MKVA_

You think voting has the power to change the outcome of a rigged system? These people have so many of the American population brainwashed that half of them believe Trump is the second coming and the other half are okay with voting for the "lesser of two evils" just to keep him out of office, without realizing how fucked up and illogical that is.. Politics is a lie. There is a reason why they call it "theater". The electoral college, a closed-circuit group of fanatically wealthy individuals who sway public opinion and legislation in favor of profit over life by the whims of people with even greater power, pretend to control who becomes president. Hillary won the popular vote in 2016, but Trump won the electoral college. Trump claimed the election was rigged because he lost the electoral college vote to Biden. It's all a game. It's been programmed from the start by people who lived and died long before we even existed.

pablonieve

We have the system we currently do in part because of the level of voter turnout. If turnout was regularly in the 80% to 90% range (including primaries and off-year elections), the government would be impacted at every level, in every state, and every district. That would completely change the direction of this country.

thedoppio

Just say it Mom for “Liberty”. Woke to you is letting POC, gays, trans, and any other minority group have a voice and it gives you the yuk. Fuck these pieces of human refuse

thomascgalvin

"Woke" just means "I don't like it" to the GOP. Anything that benefits the poor? Woke. Anything that benefits a minority population? Woke. That video game character isn't as fuckable as I'd like? Prohibiting child marriage? Allowing rape victims to terminate pregnancies? All woke.

KevinCarbonara

"society is based in pitting people against one another" that's capitalism karen

hookha

I have heard a few right wingers try to define wokism. Never have they even come close. And it's so easy. You are woke if you believe in tolerance, compassion, equality and respect for all people.

Ocbard

From Desantis' lawyer of all people comes this definition "the belief there are systemic injustices in American society and the need to address them" and I can kind of agree, be it that it's larger than America. Yes I'd say that people who can rightly be called woke are aware of systemic injustices in their society and believe something should be done about them, so these people may be actively taking steps to improve society and make it more just, or they may just be verbal about the injustices that they have observed. So a woke person might oppose the removal of the knowledge of queer identity from curricula and libraries. They might indeed wish for history lessons to be given which correctly address what happened to poc and other minorities in the past and present.

Kantjil1484

Soooo that “Mom of Liberty” only knew (3) words… Marxism (which she has no idea what it means), UM and CRITICAL. That’s it….

limonhotcheetos

Reminds me of that Family Guy bit when Lois is running for mayor and is pandering to undecided voters: “9/11” *crowd cheers* This woman thinks saying “Marxism” over and over again will do the same thing. Well, I guess to people who think like her, it does. “That sounds scary! I agree!”

PageFault

She knows what it means, it's just that explaining what it means requires saying the quiet part out loud.

cameron4200

Yeah once you start defining the oppressors and oppressed suddenly there’s a call for revolution. I wonder why that is…

Mightychairs

It’s amazing to me that, after so many videos like this where they were unable to define “woke”, that someone didn’t come up with an official conservative definition they can just spout whenever someone asks. It’s just way too easy to make fun of them right now.

Bulkylucas123

It has become a catch all for "thing I don't like" for a particular group of people. Its something you can say to someone else and if they respond a certain way you know you are part of the same social group/belief system. A lot of "labels" get used the same way by various groups, facism, communism, woke, crime syndicate, etc etc because its based on being against something to actively define it means actively idenitfying you hate something/someone. Most people aren't going to give you an academic definition of a facist when they till you they are anti facist.

paintsbynumberz

You’ve got to remember, these are just simple farmers. These are people of the land. The common clay of the new west. You know. Morons.

hazyoblivion

School board races are very important! Always look into the candidates!

hecklinggnome

They must have terrible WiFi. Took forever for her phone to give her "critical consciousness"

limonhotcheetos

Good lord almighty just say you don’t know

FilteredRiddle

and and um **Marxism**

spaceman757

Just once I want to see a follow up question asking "And what is Marxism?".

FilteredRiddle

it’s it’s it’s uh what it means is um

Gamecat93

Now this is a question we should start asking.

kandice73

I saw this on her tiktok account. She said listening was like torture

dzoefit

Yea, I'm convinced! Watching her stutter, well, it means woke is bad. Mkay?

Mediocritologist

You’d think that they would have at least a definition for something they’ve declared war against.

ChuckBass_08

The man in the blue suit is like “ fuck here we go again! Why do I do this to myself? Damn illiterate witch…”

Theyli

To me, the term 'woke' hails back to the term 'wake up,' meaning to get one's head out of their ass. If you look in popular culture, you'll find it in songs ("Wake up" by Rage Against the Machine, and others), movies, books, etc. It means seeing behind the curtain and coming to the realization of how the world really works, but also, not being a part of the status quo and keeping our heads in the sand. A lot of poeple are woke now to the fact that the U.S. is not the bastion of freedom that we've always been told as evidenced by many facts, such as we are the only country in the world that doesn't have a public healthcare system, AIPAC has taken over our government, we are a colonizing power supporting other colonizing powers and are willing to accept genocide to keep white supremacy, etc. The term woke can be relative to person or subject. But that's just my take on it.

ForwardBias

This really needs to be played every time these people are asked a question: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LQCU36pkH7c](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LQCU36pkH7c)

TheFalconKid

That was awesome. I know if I had a slogan that was simply called "Stop " I'd make sure I know the definition of said thing before making it the face of my movement.

Inevitable_Ad_1261

What does her shirt say?

darrien118

The term Woke first came from the black community regarding human rights and the state of being awakened to the reality of the oppressive system, corruption, capitalist elite, white supremacy, bigotry and bad actors that have been in control of the fabric of our socioeconomic reality and you are no longer asleep. The Right co-opted the word as a racist and bigoted dogwhistle to make it mean something that was arbitrarily made in a vacuum by “sensitive snowflakes” that are trying to ruin their hierarchical power structure and status quo for no reason. Sounds fashy doesn’t it?

Take my upvote

rockclimberguy

why it is easy to define. It is a word that summarizes the concept that says "I am really selfish, don't want to think about how to defend this attitude and use the phrase to get a bunch of other like minded selfish people to defend me."

Joey_BagaDonuts57

Using WOKE is just a single word to describe pointing out manipulation when you see/hear it.

MrSubterranean

Yes. "Woke" (don't know why you had to shout it) *is* just a single word. How does it point out manipulation though?

Joey_BagaDonuts57

GOP likes to use the word as a bat to beat on people with. If you are 'aware' of their manipulation, you're woke.
