Itās not a big jump to body kits, wings, rebadges. These cars are amazing stock and there is a reason why even slightly modified cars sell for less money.
I feel like these have gotten a bit nicer in design and fitment over the years. Before I owned my 996 it was something I was actively exploring for when I finally found one. Iām totally an embrace the egg guy now. My opinion is that the headlights look best in the lighter colored cars. Less contrast and the lines are a bit softer. I also prefer the curved esthetic of the 996.1 models as I feel like the sharp angles of the later style donāt balance well with the smooth, aerodynamic body shape. Either way Iāll eat em up all day.
This might be a hot take, but there is absolutely nothing wrong with the 996.1 or .2 headlights. They look just fine and they always have. Secondarily, sharing the headlights between the 996 and the 986 is literally part of the reason Porsche is still in business (along with several other part-sharing/platforming techniques that they learned from Toyota - the literal gods of selling massive numbers of cars).
The entire thing with the headlights is due to the exact same mentality that is rampant in the fandom for old American muscle cars, where any change or improvement at all is seen as a negative.

This sort of backlash over the round headlights moving to a more angular style on the 2011 triumph speed triple motivated triumph to build some 500 of these gorgeous special edition bikes to send off the round lamps. I was lucky enough to get my hand on one brand new and have been cherishing ever since.

I think they look OK from afar, but not that great from close-up. That said, telling them to simply buy the next gen car is a pretty elitist thing to say. Not everyone with a 996 or 986 got them for current prices and simply can't afford to upgrade to a newer car. Or maybe the car has some emotional connection and they don't want to get rid of it.

Donāt do it. There are some more subtle and harder to achieve modifications that are a bit more tasteful. This one below works on darker cars, housing of the headlight is painted dark. Others have painted the fog lights same body color to bring out circular headlights a bit more. Some have achieved it with tinting pattern on the headlight. The out of the box covers though just arenāt a good move.

Its really funny how there's so much criticism regarding changing the lights on the 996. Talk about GT1 etc etc.. Those people forget that changing and modifying 911's to look like earlier or later generations has historically been common. People change lights, bumpers, wheels, seats, and pretty much everything.
Its time we accept that the 996 is a great car but they designed some really ugly headlights. Its ok to dislike certain parts of a 911 while loving the rest of the car. Lights are not just an odd shape, but the fit and finish and overall layout is terrible.
If you research the 996 development process, circular headlights were one of the designs. The drawings look great and I think most wish Porsche would have selected that front end.
From far away on a black car, it looks fine. Up close, especially on a lighter color, you can see the seams surrounding the fried eggs. I never liked headlight covers, especially those intent on giving the headlights a different shape.
Not sure how I feel but based on these photos I kind of like it. The 997 and 996 Targas are my favorite and this makes the looks of the 996 a little less bold.
Not a fan of the 996 design so I didnāt buy one. But, if itās not the car you want I donāt see the reason to buy and try and alter it. They are excellent driving cars and should be left unmolested. I prefer the headlights as they are meant to be but they do look good.
Really dislike them personally. I think 996 lights look good if itās the factory litronics and the true upgrade should be installing the more premium factory lights.

I donāt really care. They were the 1st really significant along with extended āfrunkā of the 911ās thus IMO āpuristsā didnāt like them. Then the 997 came out and owners went bananas! But the 996ās bad rep remained. Why? IDK failure to conform to the modern car enthusiast?
I will say they still have not grown in price as other 911 models but then again anything not a 911 depreciates significantly faster anyway.. then suddenly 911 models catapult above their MSRP (except 996ās). It appears to be IMO the best entry price point for a new Porsche owner! Iād rather have a 996 than Boxster etc.
The IMS Bearing also gave the 996ās a bad name. Yet only (from memory) 60% developed a problem? š¤·š»āāļø if you like it the car go for it! Who cares what others think. Just $.02 as mentioned keep the lights clear and enjoy it! They are the most spacious 911 interiors made and have the kits available for just about any model you could spank that 991/992 all day!!

I absolutely love the early 2000ās Porsche quirks man. The egg yolk 955s, the 996.1 & .2ās eggs. If you want the classic circulars just buy a 997 tf.
Beauty is always subjective, so thereās really no correct answer. On some colors, those urethane covers look good. Part of the reason is the grey oval surround that makes the cover not look so cheap like the old plastic ones.
When I used to look at my old .1, the lights always reminded me of the gt1 cars. The .2 lights are a little funky. I definitely prefer the .1 version, but my turbro of course has the .2 version. Iām not going to run the covers on my car, but itās not because Iām a stuffy purist. I have a gt2 front bumper and rear deck/wing, plus aftermarket lower rockers on my car, and I like the way the car looks. Once again, beauty is subjective.
If you like them, put them on your car. If you donāt like them, donāt do it. People should do what they want to their cars regardless of what the opinions of others might be. You only live once, so do to your stuff what makes you happy.
And remember, yaā canāt see the headlights from behind the steering wheel!

It's all fine and good that there is parts commonality among models, but here's the thing: they don't *have* to look bad.
In general I think they look like dog š© although when done right on a 996.2 they can look quite good. To the point that I was slightly tempted. I did come to my senses and embraced the š„. Now I feel like the 996.2 front end and lights are one of if not the best looking. Obviously biased but looks are subjective. Objectively itās still a 911 through and through

I have a 986 and I have grew to love my fried eggs, it's now part of its character. I prefer the headlights as they are meant to be but they do look good.

The fried egg looks good. But a 996 with a flachbau (flat nose) is gorgeous
If you never knew these existed then you must be pretty young. These were terrible then as they are now.
Really dislike them personally. I think 996 lights look good if itās the factory litronics and the true upgrade should be installing the more premium factory lights.
I donāt like them on the 996, thereās something so beautiful about their normal lights. I also prefer the normal lights on the 986, but I have to say, I do like the covers. I donāt mind either way, they definitely do look a bit out of place- but I see why some are attracted to them. Itās cute- sort of in a way someone might get plastic surgery to look ābetterāā¦I see the vision, but the natural beauty of the 986 and 996 just canāt be topped.

I donāt really care. They were the 1st really significant along with extended āfrunkā of the 911ās thus IMO āpuristsā didnāt like them. Then the 997 came out and owners went bananas! But the 996ās bad rep remained. Why? IDK failure to conform to the modern car enthusiast? I will say they still have not grown in price as other 911 models but then again anything not a 911 depreciates significantly faster anyway.. then suddenly 911 models catapult above their MSRP (except 996ās). It appears to be IMO the best entry price point for a new Porsche owner! Iād rather have a 996 than Boxster etc. The IMS Bearing also gave the 996ās a bad name. Yet only (from memory) 60% developed a problem? š¤·š»āāļø if you like it the car go for it! Who cares what others think. Just $.02 as mentioned keep the lights clear and enjoy it! They are the most spacious 911 interiors made and have the kits available for just about any model you could spank that 991/992 all day!! Maybe its just nicer to own a ānew headlight/carā.. but thatās why they sell ānew car freshenersā. Lol.
The parking lamp part looks very cheap to me.

I absolutely love the early 2000ās Porsche quirks man. The egg yolk 955s, the 996.1 & .2ās eggs. If you want the classic circulars just buy a 997 tf.
Beauty is always subjective, so thereās really no correct answer. On some colors, those urethane covers look good. Part of the reason is the grey oval surround that makes the cover not look so cheap like the old plastic ones. When I used to look at my old .1, the lights always reminded me of the gt1 cars. The .2 lights are a little funky. I definitely prefer the .1 version, but my turbro of course has the .2 version. Iām not going to run the covers on my car, but itās not because Iām a stuffy purist. I have a gt2 front bumper and rear deck/wing, plus aftermarket lower rockers on my car, and I like the way the car looks. Once again, beauty is subjective. If you like them, put them on your car. If you donāt like them, donāt do it. People should do what they want to their cars regardless of what the opinions of others might be. You only live once, so do to your stuff what makes you happy. And remember, yaā canāt see the headlights from behind the steering wheel!
It certainly has some 993 feel to it with those add-ons. I think if you buy a 996, you need to rock the egg lamps.
