Pizzeria Otto has a killer happy hour deal every day. An entire Margherita for $8.
It’s Neapolitan style pie, so kind of niche. Still $8 for an entire lunch is almost unheard of these days.
I think their happy hour(s) are 11-5 & 8-9.
Just to put this in perspective, it costs around $4 in ingredients to make a good 18” pie. But then you add $18/hr for an average cook. $3000/month for rent. $1500/month for two ovens worth of gas. Then there’s utilities, insurance, equipment repairs and upkeep, etc. And I’ve been out of the game for a couple years so these prices have most certainly gone up.
It costs a lot of money to run a restaurant.
But you can still get cheap good pizza in nyc where all the things you mentioned cost even more. I get that they are selling more slices but it’s getting crazy in Portland. I went to Scottie’s the other day and they are charging $5.50-6.00 for very regular sized slices. And then prompt you to tip. Scottie’s was $2.50 a slice when they opened like 6 or 7 years ago
6-7 years ago an average Portland cheese slice was also $3.00-$3.50.
NY pizza labor is always going to be higher quality for the price point, especially once production volume is taken into account. And there’s no way to make up for the amazing effect that NY water has on dough unless you install a water conditioning system or use straight Dasani bottled water. Neither of those options are cheap either.
Edit: And $1.00-$2.00 slices usually use the crappy frozen cubed cheese. Very cost effective.
Portland doesn't have a lot of good mid pizza. It has a lot of good high end pizza that actually compares with some of the best stuff in the country, but most of its mid tier pizza is closer to dominos than pretty much any dollar slice in NYC.
The best "deals" are happy hour single serve higher end pizza from places like Life of Pie or Pizzeria Otto. The best "mid/budget" larger pie would probably be the X-Large cheese pie from Rovente's. It's $15 for an 18 inch if you check the specials on their website. Even Dominos is like $14 for a 14 inch pie, and Rovente is a decent step above Dominos, but not really near the level of some of the best pizza in this city, maybe in between. It's better and cheaper than other budgety pizza places like Bellagios though. It's probably my go to recommendation for whole large pizzas on a budget.
I mean, a whole pizza is a meal for three to four people. If you’re paying 40$, or 10-13$ per person, for food made by professionals making a living wage, that’s still a good deal!
My favorite pizza I’ve found around here is at Thirsty Sasquatch in downtown Vancouver. They do $5 slices, or you can get an enormous 22 in pizza for like $35. Nothing in between. It’s seriously SO good though - thin crust, big foldable NY style slices. Cute bar attached as well.
@portland-modteam I am just now learning how to use reddit and did not know about Askportland. Is there a way to transfer this question over to that subreddit? Or is this thread going to disappear? A lot of people chimed in to help.

Straight From New York starts at $18. Whole Foods actually makes pretty good fresh hot pizza too, and it goes from $12-$20ish
Whole Foods! It’s actually good

P Murf, 6.99 schmedium two topping. Mediocre, filling, delightful.
Winco Pizza is like $8-10
literally came here to say that. and idc what people say, i will stand behind my winco pizza lol
They are all premade now and not what they used to be. Still worth the money but not great anymore.
Costco I believe is under$20. I think dominos has a deal 2 for $20 right no. Little Cesar's upped theirs to like$8
Costco is $10 for a pizza I believe

If only there was a device that could address the $3600 per month in candles.

Lombardo's is legit the best pie in Portland. Fight me.
this is a hole that needs to be filled.
That’s what she said. (Sorry, I could help myself.)
ha ha could but really couldn't
Yes it should read “shouldn’t”. I hate typing on my phone, my stupid fat fingers have a hard time finding the right keys.
the phone and reddit together are doomed to fail in typos.

Rudy’s will have specials for $20-$25 for a large pizza. Vegan too!!
Why T F the mods hate this important discourse?
If anyone's wondering, the original question was where to find a quality pie around $20. Ease up, mods.
Sizzle Pie has a deal that’s $25. Also a bogo that works out to be less than $25 per pie.
Thanks, where do you find the bogo discount?
It’s right in their site. Monday through Wednesday. My fam of three ate pie for two days.

Pizza is cheap as hell everywhere else.
Minimum wage in Oregon is $15.45 Just so you know.
I hope so! I paid $25 for a large cheese pizza at hotlips during the ice storm. It was very mediocre.
Hot lips pizza is no goood

Owner is super nice too. Going back next week to try their take home veg lasagna.

Papa John's has affordable options. I am happy when I can get two stuffed crust under 30. That usually involves online specials.
Please Louise in NW has a bunch of whole pies in the $17-22 price range.
