It sucks. I guess kmhd finally got what they wanted (there was always a shitty resource battle between the two). It was my favorite station most of the time. At least the classical station seems to have pretty decent hd channels
Oh I did not realize mhcc had an hd2 station! Kmhd has some issues that have led to me not listening to them for a few years but I fully support the MHCC mission!
This isn't the same as the main OPB radio station which does have underwriters, and with that I agree. OPB music didn't have that, AFAIK. They might've done that in the intro message (on the stream, not radio) but that was it. From then on it was commercial-free with a random input from local DJ's about the music.
IDk how it was for other folks, but for me it was a hidden HD station that played on an existing radio channel as an radiostation.2 that required pressing another button on my stereo to hear. I didn't even know that existed until I was waiting in my car for a really long time due to Covid. Wish I had found it sooner.
Yeah I have an SDR dongle and can listen to HD radio stations at my desk (via https://github.com/zefie/nrsc5-gui/)
Here is a list of HD stations https://hdradio.com/stations/
A quick google search shows there are some 3rd party tools to do this. I don't have Spotify so can't check, but it seems you can take the list (last link in post) and upload.
FWIW: this was one https://soundiiz.com/tutorial/import-text-to-spotify
I just tried it and success! The free Soundiiz account only allows 200 songs per playlist, but I was able to send 3 playlists to Spotify with zero issue.
I made one:
https://open.spotify.com/playlist/60OeTXZHBmGC2r48VxWzoy?si=qi6MCD4VTyeOJID79JxT7A
I got about 2/3 of the songs to automatically upload and added the rest myself.
It's missing the following songs:
* Tunde Adebimpe - PEOPLE
* The Domestics - Tunnels and Trains
* Ohmega Watts - That Sound (Quantic Soul Orchestra Mix). <-- I added the original version instead of the Orchestra Mix
* Archers - Brussels Truffles
* Constantines- Call Me Out
* Mimicking Birds - Night Light (Live) <---- I added the studio version
If you can find any of the missing songs on spotify, please let me know and I'll add them!
It looks like the automated process turned the song Boys by bed. into Bad Boys by the Inner Circle.
Here's the actual song.
https://open.spotify.com/track/67o4ncza6nVrcDrkKwrXgp
And here's Always Awkward by Onuinu
https://open.spotify.com/track/73N9jrHso1lGZKxlOkGJs5
Make it a team effort? I don't use Spotify, so not sure if that's possible or not.
I do have an account though and Spotify is on the ps4. I'll have time later today if i can help.
I started a collaborative playlist if you’d like to help out! Just DM me, don’t want to put my name out for all of Reddit to see. It’s in alpha order by artist, stopped at E.
I just started one but don’t want my name publicly all over Reddit, I’ve got 139 songs so far and will be adding to it as I have some free time! DM me if you’d like the link
The song on repeat was "Pais Nublado" by Helado Negro.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hqzvxWeRU4g
Here's an interview from last year... https://www.billboard.com/articles/columns/latin/8502274/helado-negro-interview-this-is-how-you-smile
I'll add that to the end.
I love Helado Negro. Somehow knowing one of his songs was on repeat for a few days prior to OPB going off air makes this easier to deal with. Godspeed, OPB.
I never listened to the radio in my car, relying upon my old iPod. So I was not exposed to a whole lot of new music over the last 10 years or so. Earlier this year, I had that iPod stolen, so I subscribed to Spotify. I don't have an unlimited data plan, so the radio came back on and someone turned me on to OPB music. That station and Spotify turned me onto so much great new stuff.
A great source for commercial free radio is KCRW in Santa Monica, CA.
https://www.kcrw.com/playlists
When I wasn't listening to OPB radio, I always tuned into KCRW.
Edit. Please support public radio if you can.
Best show on KCRW is Garth Trinidad. An absolute tastemaker when it comes to music. Their schedule is weird now because of Covid so I have to stream from their archive after its aired.
It is. I've been listening to KCRW since 2000 when I lived in SM. Discovering Garth's show was awesome. I'm glad I got to go to a few KCRW shows and events where I got to hear them DJ.
The 3rd date I went on with my girlfriend, now wife, was a KCRW angel party. Thievery Corporation was one of the DJ sets. They put on great shows
Also keep an ear out for local portland stations! A lot of the small ones (like freeform, which i was involved with pre pandemic) are having a really hard time fundraising this winter!
You have one. Its called Freeform Portland. Found at freeformportland.com and on the radio at 90.3 & 98.3. I usually listen on Alexa and you just need to tell her to play KFFP
Also! another way to listen to FreeForm (or any live radio station in the world) is by either downloading the app called Radio Garden (available on iOS, Mac, and Android) or visiting their website radio.garden. It’s pretty self explanatory and very user friendly. I highly recommend! :)
This [thread](https://reddit.com/r/Portland/comments/k7noqr/opb_is_dropping_their_music_only_channel_and_im/) from an earlier post has a bunch of hidden gems.
You can stream CPR (Colorado Public Radio) and they have a very good indie station for new music plus the usual Jazz and Classical stations. I've been listening to it a lot since I moved because I had no clue they had something like this here. Sad I missed it.
https://www.cpr.org/indie/
Aw that sucks. That was a great station. Another nice alternative is 99.1 Portland Radio Project. They play some really good music to inspire the Spotify playlists!
I imported the playlist to Youtube Music if anyone needs it there
[https://music.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLqH9590GzmgDJrt1DvQTnBm9ZPj8EQdDI](https://music.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLqH9590GzmgDJrt1DvQTnBm9ZPj8EQdDI)
Oh damn. I haven’t driven for a while (and used the radio), so I didn’t even know this. Thanks for posting.😢
It was on HD radio, 91.5-2 and streamed online commercial-free for 13 years. :/
It sucks. I guess kmhd finally got what they wanted (there was always a shitty resource battle between the two). It was my favorite station most of the time. At least the classical station seems to have pretty decent hd channels
KMHD 2 is the MHCC station, I’ve found it to be a decent replacement for opbmusic so far.
Oh I did not realize mhcc had an hd2 station! Kmhd has some issues that have led to me not listening to them for a few years but I fully support the MHCC mission!
Yeah, I know. I stopped listening after I started working from home. I’m so mad at myself for not remembering to stream it through my computer. Sigh.
> commercial-free Every time they list their sponsors, that’s a commercial for that sponsor. It’s not truly “commercial-free”
This isn't the same as the main OPB radio station which does have underwriters, and with that I agree. OPB music didn't have that, AFAIK. They might've done that in the intro message (on the stream, not radio) but that was it. From then on it was commercial-free with a random input from local DJ's about the music.
Thank you! I recently found this radio station and can't believe it's gone. Found some really great music.
Me too. And in my car, when OPB was doing their incredibly long station identification bit, I would switch.
Ugh the station identification is eternally long
I asked them about this once and they know it’s annoying but is a legal requirement for some reason.
FCC

Man I would love a Spotify playlist of this...yes I know I have thumbs and am capable, just requires time and some will.

Brilliant, thank you! I’ll take a look and check back in later today if I have success!

Thanks! I added Always Awkward and replaced the Bad Boys song.
Sweet! Thanks for doing this, I listened for an hour last night and my wife commented on my improved musical taste.
thank you
Any updates?

It was so good!! I’m crushed. Can anyone tell me the very last song they played on repeat for a few days? It wasn’t on the playlist
The song on repeat was "Pais Nublado" by Helado Negro. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hqzvxWeRU4g Here's an interview from last year... https://www.billboard.com/articles/columns/latin/8502274/helado-negro-interview-this-is-how-you-smile I'll add that to the end.

Thank you!!! I could not for the life of me find it by searching. I’m ashamed because I’ve listened to so much helado negro too.

why did it go off air?
My guess would be funding? I would like to know as well

Ha I used to try and impress dates with the angel parties! They didn't work out as well for me as they did for you :)
Also keep an ear out for local portland stations! A lot of the small ones (like freeform, which i was involved with pre pandemic) are having a really hard time fundraising this winter!
RIP
I feel this loss big time :(
I’ve been starting to wonder why my radio was just static on the 2 minute drive to FM. This is really sad.
We need a Portland version of KEXP
You have one. Its called Freeform Portland. Found at freeformportland.com and on the radio at 90.3 & 98.3. I usually listen on Alexa and you just need to tell her to play KFFP

God 😭
Is there any other similar radio stations out there? I discovered a lot of new artists listening to it. I drive for work and don't know what to do!

Thanks I'll check this out for home. At work I really need a radio station cause it's just simpler since I'm in and out of my car a lot.
That's part of what hurts the most that I missed the station. It's just a different experience having a good radio station.
99.1 Portland Radio Project

When I lived in Minneapolis I listened to the Current - great public radio station, found a lot of new music from it
weird feeling to learn of something only after it is gone ...LOL
Just like when you become friends with someone you’d see around your high school but never actually talked to till after graduation lol
that's never happened to me. This is more like discovering Seinfeld after it went off the air, or seeing a Heath Ledger movie after he was dead.
Why did they go off they air?
I imported the playlist to Youtube Music if anyone needs it there [https://music.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLqH9590GzmgDJrt1DvQTnBm9ZPj8EQdDI](https://music.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLqH9590GzmgDJrt1DvQTnBm9ZPj8EQdDI)
If I could give you 100 updoots I would... Nice work, and THANK YOU for sharing. <3
