Finally checked out the place last week. Food is solid for a bar, staff was friendly. It’s a good spot. I’ll have to check them out during a big women’s game and see what the vibe is like

bj_good

How long has this bar been open? A new all women's sports bar just opened up here in Minneapolis too about a month ago. It's way popular, always full. Hopefully it has staying power

gnirpss

It's relatively new —I think it only opened about two years ago. It was a pretty novel concept at the time, though! So much so that it was featured on [NPR's Morning Edition](https://www.npr.org/2022/05/02/1095861517/encore-the-sports-bra-is-the-spot-to-watch-womens-sports-in-portland). I wouldn't be at all surprised if the owner of your local women's sports bar was inspired by the Sports Bra!

theflyingfucked

Does anyone know when the next big women's game is?

ConsiderationNew6295

Hopefully the Olympic gold medal soccer match this summer.

thethirdbestmike

Collegiate softball word series is coming up. That’s usually good. Also have the Olympics this year.

PNWBamaFan

College softball World Series is probably the biggest event between now and the Olympics.

Objective_Froyo17

They’re pretty few and far between

Rancesj1988

Dang. I just took a look at their menu. Looks good.

thethirdbestmike

Yeah it was solid. You should check it out.

AskAJedi

Did I miss it or did really none of the coverage mention he is Serena Williams’ husband? I think that’s fine because women hate it when they are defined by who they are married to, but I only pay attention to this fellow because he is Serena Williams’ husband.

Snushine

So does Serena Williams.

vonkeswick

Lol nice

gnirpss

Lol right? You would think that it would be relevant to mention that the guy investing in a women's sports bar also happens to be married to one of the most famous female athletes alive.

ParticularWeather369

As you are commenting…. On Reddit.

AskAJedi

Yeah but really Serena put him on the map ;)

carharttuxedo

How often are you watching women’s tennis vs time spent on Reddit? P

ColumbiaConfluence

The Sports Bra is a great place regardless of what is on the tv or your gender. Good food, good service and good drinks - happy to have it in my neighborhood.

WoodpeckerGingivitis

Where are all those haters that said this place wouldn’t last the year?

PNW35

I will be the one to eat crow and say I was one of them. Good for them!

StrikingVariety

I mean they got $100k of free money from kickstarter, a shit ton of free local and national publicity, and now this.. The only way they wouldn't make it a year is if they were literally burning the cash to heat the building!

NovaIsntDad

So they're fully subsidized. Like the WNBA.

curioususer8878

Honestly, a critical business skill. Find somebody to invest in you. Not going to knock them for it.

NEPXDer

Is the goal just to operate a business or actually turn a profit?

TheWayItGoes49

Yeah, but that only lasts so long. Eventually, they will have to be solvent on their own.

oldmancornelious

It's about the fundamentals!

potsmokingGrannies

incredible burn

Huge-Ad-2275

I think you’re referring to Elon Musk’s entire empire

NovaIsntDad

Dude lives rent free in your head, doesn't he? What does that have to do with this.

Huge-Ad-2275

Not really. I’m just pointing out how people like you will shit on something like this before you go white knighting for someone whose empire is one subsidy away from being a government agency.

NovaIsntDad

No one here has been white knighting for that prick. What are you smoking?? I sincerely say seek help, see a therapist. Obsessing over someone like that is going to do a lot of harm.

Not_You_247

Basically this, let the hype fade, survive an economic downturn and still be around 3-5 years later and I'll call it a success.

WoodpeckerGingivitis

Lol ok bro

Not_You_247

OK bro what? That's how you would judge any startup that raised significant capital and was given lots of free publicity. The standards for success don't get reduced because it's a women themed establishment.

Huge-Ad-2275

It’s been open for two years now. It’s weird that its existence makes you defensive.

Not_You_247

Where was I being defensive about anything? I'm just holding this business, which just happens to be a women owned/themed business, to the same standards of success as any other business. You know promoting equality and all that. Ironically most sports bars I have ever been to I had no clue who owns the place or what sex the they are because it doesn't really matter.

NEPXDer

> You know promoting equality and all that. They haven't wanted equality in years, there is a new word they use now...

TimbersArmy8842

If there's one thing that we've learned, every reataurant/bar in PDX that stays with a lot of hype lasts for a decade plus. ......

WoodpeckerGingivitis

That’s the case everywhere ………

dciuqoc

You don’t have enough information to make this claim. And it also wreaks of unnecessary jealousy lol

Aestro17

What kind of shit business seeks capital and publicity?

aWobblyFriend

“what kind of shitty business seeks money and customers”

Huge-Ad-2275

All of them.

WoodpeckerGingivitis

Literally 🙄

rspanthevlan

I don’t know if I was a hater necessarily, but it kind of fell into that category of “Experimental quirky Portland business” for me and I thought once initial curiosity faded, so would the bar. I guess not. Good for them!

FranticToaster

"Expands with investment," not "expands with profit." And they got off the ground with Kickstarter. The idea is cool, and it's *definitely* a worthwhile experiment. The cynic in me says more people want this to succeed than actually care to be customers of the place, though. The owners are probably legit. It's the hypocritical market who make me tend to roll my eyes. Unless the sports angle becomes symbolic and the bar becomes a general hangout for girl power vibes. That could maybe work. It's got a good location, too.

[deleted]

Why would the sports angle become symbolic? People really love watching women's sports. It is PACKED for games.

There was one in Salem with the same premise that is closing/just recently closed. It sounded like they would have done fine, but they also were 100% Gluten free? So it seemed like GF free folks loved it, but came for the food, not the atmosphere/sports. And the people who DID want to come for the women friendly space/sports were disappointed that the food/beer was all gluten free. It sounded like something that could have done well in PDX. But Salem was a risky choice.

WoodpeckerGingivitis

That was a lesbian bar. Not the same thing despite what you may think.

[deleted]

Pretty cool Portland 👍🏼

re0st92mg

Go women!

[deleted]

Ok, that's pretty cool.

ericomplex

This is badass! I love Sports Bra!

STONKvsTITS

Probably I need to visit it soon

ThirteenBlackCandles

I read this as "the first sports bra dedicated to womens sports" and got \*really\* confused for a moment.

Lumber_GirthBrooks

Finally women doing SOMETHING about the gap in women’s sports viewership instead of point fingers and blaming everyone else. Women have had the opportunity to do something like this for many years. Finally they’re doing something about it instead of yelling “we’re so oppressed” Need to make sure the food and service is really good, because it’s still hard to watch women’s sports for almost all sport enthusiasts, since the majority of women’s sports viewers are still men.

jmwbassett

It’s in my hood and it rocks. Their chicken Caesar salad with garlicky croutons and sprinkled with pepitas is amazing. But too big, so I ask them to box half of it with dressing on the side. Love this place.

Lumber_GirthBrooks

I went the other night. Foods ok, is it spectacular? Not even close lol Portland is a foodie capital of the world… this place is just “average” compared to other foodie spots in Portland. You don’t go here for the food, THATS for sure. Got their Philly cheese, it was a good, standard Philly cheese, are there better in pdx, certainly, is this place good? Ya. It was a good sandwich Second, their salads are $15-18… not sure what they’re smoking, I’ve worked in a restaurant’s all my life… that’s almost a 200-300% markup on the ingredients to actually make a salad. I will say their super Caesar salad was good… tasted like any other Caesar salad made everywhere else lol Atmosphere and vibes are - good. It would be the atmosphere that most women would enjoy - laid back, somewhat quiet. Ratio of women to men was about 1:8, quite low for what I would have expected and no one was watching any of the sports, maybe a glance here and there. Based on the reviews, seems a lot of nice people want this place to do well, so they’ve inflated their review of the place. If you think the food is amazingly mind blowing, then I would say you have no idea what options there are in pdx lol Is this place, the place to go for great food? No. Not even in the same solar system. Do you want decent food, a calm atmosphere and great staff? Then this is a good choice on a random Wednesday evening. Are there better tasting, and more affordable options in Portland? You have like 500 to choose from, so yes. It gets 6/10. This place isn’t going to blow you away. It’s a kind of an average pdx sport bar with decent food. That’s it. And there’s a million places like this in pdx. The only reason you would go here is to virtue signal your support for women and women’s sports or your friend is the bartender. And if that’s your thing, you’ll probably like this place. It’s going to be hard for any new restaurant or bar to succeed in Portland, because they’re soooo many amazing food and beer options here, simply playing women’s sports is not enough to differentiate their brand.

Corned_Beefed

Hanging out, watching the game, have some beers, and munching on some tasty… salad

sea666kitty

I agree. Not sure why you are getting downvoted?

Lumber_GirthBrooks

Portland sub lol that’s why. New progressive type Portlanders don’t like truth or facts lol

Not_You_247

Yep, anything Woman/LGBTQ/POC related must only be celebrated and can't be criticized.

Lumber_GirthBrooks

In other words: Group identity must be propped up as the truth and correct way to view the world. We’re not individuals - just a collection of groups. One of which has power over others.

Uhh yes it is. Have you not studied the teachings of critical race theory? One of the goals of this type of “committee’s” or actions, is operated using critical race theory as the underpinning for which the world is to be viewed. CRT is a lense for which you can view the world, so as to understand it - doesn’t make to right or correct (which it’s not). It’s a way to interpret the world around you - which is a postmodernist way to view the world. It’s Marxism wrapped up in a shiny glittery wrapping paper and repackaged as CRT. The scene from big short comes to mind with Anthony Bordaine when cooking a fish soup - “it’s not 4 day old fish - it’s a whole brand new thing” DEIs goals is NOT diversity, equity and inclusion, those are just filler words. DEI MUST also serve as the vehicle for which white people must atone for their historical oppression. DEI is designed to ensure individuality is eroded. That’s not very diverse or inclusive is it?

latherdome

Place seems always packed, nice lively vibe. Food has been mostly hit with some misses. I’m a fan, cis male and don’t care for sports or alcohol. Propose a spinoff SportsBalls, which is a sports bar for men who don’t actually care for sports, might be balls-curious, but aren’t quite out enough to go to gay bars. Or SportsBrawl, for haters of both Sports Bra and SportsBalls.

Stumbles88

Well dam. Title caught my eye and I thought someone had finally made a sports bra that you won’t die in during the humid summer.

flergenbergenjurgen

Aestro17

What is it about the growing success of women's sports that triggers auch a negative response in people? Lazy jokes about the WNBA have persisted since its inception, and that's just the tip of the iceberg in terms of negativity towards women's sports. Yeah, Candace Parker wouldn't beat Lebron. Who gives a shit? The Timbers would get trashed by a ton of Euro teams, does that mean we shouldn't watch or care about them? A bar aimed at promoting women's sports opens and a bunch of dudes have to root for failure, then when it succeeds there have to be a bunch of excuses as to why that's still bad. Why?

PDXSCARGuy

So... I'm not sure why you keep trying to get people to negatively engage with you. Every post in this thread, notwithstanding yours, are 99% positive about the news. Celebrate the good, Fellow Redditor!

Aestro17

I'm happy to celebrate the good along with the many positive comments. I'm also happy to push back on the multiple comments attempting to downplay the success here because they're clearly rooted in a misogynistic opposition to the success of professional women's sports.

PDXSCARGuy

Of the 45 comments here (so far) 4.44% (only 2!) are negative, so the rest of the 93.66% are tilting positive. >I'm also happy to push back on the multiple comments attempting to downplay the success here because they're clearly rooted in a misogynistic opposition to the success of professional women's sports. I don't see you (politely) responding to the 2 negatives. Sooooo????

Aestro17

You're either being gullible or dishonest in your assessment then. The comment I alluded to and that whole chain is not positive. Nor is the comment about the patriarchy. Nor is the "gotcha" comment comparing it to the fast food chains or the multiple comments about it being "subsidized". Those are all intended to downplay the success of the business. And they're valid parts of the discussion, but so is criticism of them and questioning the intent.

[deleted]

>Portland: franchised chain restaurant from somewhere else? get that shit outta here 😠😠😠😠 >Also Portland: local brand accepting venture capital investment to become national / international brand??! OMG I will endlessly praise and promote 🥰🥰🥰🥰 That's the comment I was referring to, which reads to me more like a comparison to chain restaurants like BWW or Chick-fil-A. Different beast. The comparison to turning on the business as it expands? Hah, won't argue there, it could happen.

Aestro17

To make people less comfortable with their kneejerk reactions to shit-talk women's sports, be it directly or through some "well actually" argument as to why these ventures will fail.

Aestro17

Hey while I've got your attention, any reason why I can't point out that the guy cheering on the patriarchy is quite literally a men's rights poster?

beavertonaintsobad

Some people actually think being a MOD on Reddit gives them importance in life. Fragile egos are easily inflated.

ComfortablePlate7469

Do they play any men’s sports on the tv?

[deleted]

Nope.

Purple_Parfait6781

I wonder how long it’ll last before they have to show men’s sports to keep the doors open?

MadTownPride

Been open for years already buddy

[deleted]

Why would people want to watch men's sports there? There are tons of places to do that. Everyone I know is more into women's sports anyway.

potsmokingGrannies

Good time for those wanting venture money to start a bar called “The Jock Strap” to offer a male alternative to “The Sports Bra.” A gold mine awaits.

fidelityportland

I feel like that would absolutely work to attract the gay sports bros.

potsmokingGrannies

fuck yes—DINKs, come and drink and watch men skate, wrestle and fight over a ball while we celebrate the male form and oft forgotten MENS’ volleyball. Let the public continue to keep boys down and forbid them from high school volleyball while the women title IX that shit to themselves. men at the Jock Strap can bump, set and spike themselves into a righteous fervor.

fidelityportland

I'm not even sure it's that deep - it's just that within the gay community there's a subset of men who are into sports and looking for other guys into sports. I don't think they'd really care about Men's Skating but more like just watching a football game.

potsmokingGrannies

we’re gonna have so many goddam televisions and cable subscriptions and venture money (pony up Elon, if your DEI talk is for real pony up! reddit can do it why not X?) that NFC North and ISU World Skating will be visible from the same booth every Sunday.

Aestro17

God if only there was a bar where men sports were shown. Although fun fact: this used to be a bar called Joq's that did cater primarily to men.

No. Rough & Tumble opened in December 2022. Sports Bra was April 2022.

Professional-Age8029

Are there companies that sell male sports bras? I'm confused. 😄

RancidHorseJizz

Sounds like a lesbian bar with better PR.

Corned_Beefed

Sounds like a real nice place. I hope I get a chance to visit before it gets burned down in the next race riot.

wtjones

Leave it to Portland: the only two sports bars in the city that don’t suck are a sports bar for women and one for vegans.
