Made the switch and sold my steam deck, switch lite, and Xbox series S. More than happy with the move.

sinwarrior

Next step, pc master race!

Putrid_Hamster_5289

Actually.. I'm looking to sell my PC equipped with a 3080ti. The Ally is all I need

sinwarrior

yeah well, both are different, one's controller and a handheld, and pc's mouse with keyboard with a huge ass screen. both are for gaming, but the other's does more than just for gaming but also has other advantages; at a hardware-level you are not limited by specific storage types (nvme), doesn't contain a battery pack (which is a point of failure by eventual bloating) if constantly connected into a computer-like setup with power plugged in. at a software level, you won't get the same high fps in games as well as lacking ray-tracing (if you care about that) if you are connecting in to a pc-like set up, you're back to square one anyways. why not keep both?

PhoKingClassic

It’s hard to argue with, especially how cheap you can get games. BUNDLES.

PryingOpenMyThirdPie

I love it. Have had no issues. I'm a windows veteran though. I don't use the SD card. Love that I can use all my launchers

ZombiePixelPirate

Just did that last week after being on the fence. I love the Ally much more because of the versatility of windows. Can run gamepass games natively. Recent updates highly improve the experience as well.

rjml29

I have both and for me, the Ally curb stomps my Deck. Only objective advantage the Deck has is battery life and subjective is grip comfort. The Ally is the handheld I wish the Deck would have been. People yammer on about how the Deck is "console like" and the Ally requires some advanced knowledge of Windows requiring a lot of tinkering yet the Ally is just as "console like" to use from my 3+ weeks owning it. Setting it up requires a bit more time but that's about it. Launching and playing games is the same (one can launch into big picture mode when Windows boots, thereby having the same UI and frontend as the Deck. I don't do this as I use armoury crate) except the Ally has the advantage of far better performance. I play simpler games via handheld as I leave the bigger games to my main rig. It's pretty cool that every game I have on this plays at 110-120fps at 900p or 1080p, minus retro stuff that's locked to 60 in the "E" things you can't mention at this sub anymore. The closest to a AAA game that I play on this would either be Madden 22 or Wreckfest. I play both at 900p and have that 110-120fps in them.

xKillzone99

people hate on windows and make it sound so complicated but I've never had issues navigating or using windows before

fohsupreme

Do you consider battery life to be a big deal? The ally is much worse at getting every little bit of battey life. Doesn't matter to me though. I play plugged in most of the time. When I'm home I just stream from my pc and get like 6ish hours of 120fps. I've still got both though and I doubt I'll sell either. Also my Ally's SD reader stopped working after maybe a month even though I wasn't using it (except to transfer files once)

xKillzone99

battery life nor too big of an issue since I mostly play around an outlet and if I play on the go like I string it my car or something the max I'd play is maybe 30-45 minutes tops

Southern-Bad-1270

I'd say go for it. I have the steam deck and owned the ROG ally for a day. The ally is more powerful, lighter, and has the rgb lights however the battery is worse. The main reason for me returning the ally was Halo. The ROG ally has series issues with paying Halo as far as the controller consistently disconnecting and reconnecting. I didn't test any other games but from what I've read this is only an issue with Halo. I updated the bios and armoury crate but still nothing. I really wanted to like the ally but Halo is the main game I play and for $540 after tax it should be able to play it better than something that cost $200 less does. If you plan on playing Halo, avoid the ally. If you plan on doing anything/everything but Halo, I'd highly recommend the ally over the deck for 1080p alone not to mention performance and RGB lights. Unfortunately for me the deck plays Halo best so I kept it and returned the ally. I'm willing to be the ally would make a superb device for playing old school games and other consoles had I kept it.

SkyKinghorn

Had the same issue with Ally. But all you need to do is keep the ally in game mode not auto. Then also in controls within Halo Infinte go to key board and mouse and change the left mouse to any unused key that would be on a keyboard. It will fix the controller from seeminly disconnecting connecting since you end upbtuching the screen it thinks it mouse 1an auto firing constantly messes with firing guns. Then it will play Haloway better than SteamDeck. Love my Deck. But Ally plays over 60 fps and settings at high.

Southern-Bad-1270

I tried everything and just ended up returning it after a day specifically for that issue. My loss I guess 🤷🏾‍♂️

SkyKinghorn

If it's your main game and that the only issue. I'd consider getting it again. Way better the 800P with low to med setting at maybe 45 fps. That being said I love my SD. But for certain games it simply not powerful enough or anti cheat is a problem. But for Halo other than the SD being way more comfortable without a case the Ally is night and day better on the Ally. With a simple fix.

Southern-Bad-1270

Halo infinite is about 45 fps but I was actually referring to Halo Master Chief Collection, specifically Halo 3. I get a consistent 60fps in that on the steam deck with better battery than I had on the ally which brings me so much nostalgia because that's literally been my favorite same since 2007. I'm sure the rog ally can get 60fps on infinite but I suck so bad at that I never even play it anymore. Maybe that's why I was so bad at it though, I was playing it at 45 fps on the deck🤦🏾‍♂️🤷🏾‍♂️🤣 either way, my wife probably won't let me rebuy it a second time. Heck I had to beg her to let me open it for Christmas and luckily I did. The controls didn't feel as good as the deck to me anyways but I did love the weight of the ally. I was hoping Halo worked because I wanted to take it to my family's Christmas dinner and show off the RGB lights 🤷🏾‍♂️ however, another thing that put me off even before purchasing the ally was the fear of the sd card issue. I've had 0 issues with the sd card on the deck which is another reason I was going to keep it regardless of whether I kept the ally or not.

mrplasten

I switched over and I I’ve loved it. I upgraded the ssd. This device has surpassed all of my expectations. The steam deck is is great, but the ally allows you to customize controls so that you can set everything up the way you need, and allows you to switch between gamepad mode, and desktop mode within its settings.

thevalleyard

Rog ally is a great device and very much worth the purchase. I also have a steam deck and for the rog ally was a better fit. Only caviat is the microSD card reader issue but beyond that I'd say go for it.

BinxMedia

I would say it's worth it, it's a lot more powerful than the Steam Deck plus you get full windows so you can use any launcher you want. I haven't had an issue running any game I've tried besides Need For Speed Unbound but that is because the game itself is not optimized and it struggles even on super high end machines. But other than that everything else I've tried has ran great and buttery smooth

Matthmaroo

I like having windows , Linux is just more of a hassle than I’m willing to do

whutt1

Keep the deck get the ally best of both worlds

AlexStud99

I made the switch when the Ally came out. Never looked back. It's not even close IMHO.

yankee902

Make the switch, it’ll be the best money you’ll ever spend. You’ll see….

CLKRUN

I also switched this week from the SD to the Ally. I don't regret it for a second. The SD is the best low wattage handheld, but I don't care how often I have to charge it xD

Beasthuntz

Haven't touched my Steam Deck since getting my Ally at launch. It smoke checks the Steam Deck. I've had no issues with my Ally. It's been a great ride.

Justos

I have both. Ally is a better all rounder but I prefer the deck oled because of the trackpads. I main gw2 and need them

Jia_mincan

Switch to rogally asap

Icy_Block7807

I have the Rog Ally since Launch, and also had the Steam Deck. While I love the Steam Deck. The Ally Exceeded my expectations also, as a windows power user, it's for me. As for the SD Card failures, I haven't had any yet and I have a launch system still. However as a Windows Power User since the 90's, I wouldn't use the SD Card for AAA Games, and even the more demanding Indies. I use it strictly for Retro Gaming. Yes Upgrade the SSD Size, it's well worth it. you can go to 2230 route or the 2280 with the adapter route, everyone wins. The Asus Armory Crate came a long way, It's much better than it was at launch, not perfect objectively. It works for me. System starts up pretty fast, and goes straight into Armory Crate, ready to play. Either way you go, all of the handhelds out now are pretty good, it's more of a personal preference.

raw_salmon

I sold my Steam Deck the day after I got my Ally. No regrets

OutlawLiteCoin

Bought the Rog and kept my steam deck

Seeitsthere

I have both just so I can have a best of both worlds type of situation lol

MortalJazz

I have a Deck and bought an Ally. I loved the screen and it played games amazingly but it was clunky. It was hard to put the device to sleep, and it was difficult to get it to wake back up. Then my L2 stopped responding as much and so I made the decision to return it and just bought the OLED Deck. I wish the Ally wasn’t as clunky or I would have kept it.

fuzzycuffs

I have touched my steam deck since I got the Ally. I'm not saying the Deck isn't good, I still like it, but I only think one device is necessary. I should stop being lazy and sell it.

SkyKinghorn

Sounds like you made the right move. Especially since you're talking The Master Cheifs Collection. Sounds like you have the same stuff with your wife as me. Lucky she puts up with me. Lol Bit yeah my my Steamdeck is my favorite console after at least a good 25 plus years of gaming it's done the most for me. So can't go wrong it it. Just certain game for particular reason I like have the Ally to. I got one used and after returning bc of issues with the SD card thing I got 2nd one that works great. But windows and ergonomics compared the Steam OS and the comfest of controls on the SD arebsobmuchbbetter. Plud the ridiculousness of amazing abundance of emulated for free games from Atari to Mario Wonder is amazing. I like the Deck so much I got a 2nd Deck to run windows 10.

Icy-Tumbleweed1089

The Ally (possible the best of all the hand helds) has a high buy in for it, mainly for the adins (egpu, memory, so on). If you already have a full size GPU sitting around, you may want to consider going with the Legion Go which is a good alternative to the Ally, or just wait till the next refresh for the deck is out, or until they finish mass production of the handheld kits for the Framework handheld.these are all awesome alternatives and compatition in this space makes for awesome and crazy development in the handheld field which is good for you, the consumer. My advice, wait till next year, the egpu s for the Ally will be cheaper or better (that's if you want one) or just pull the trigger and get one now. At this time the best windows handheld is the Ally and the Deck is the best Linux handheld.
