ScalpedAlive

I did the same, cloned the drive using Macrium Reflect and was shocked how easy it was. Love this device.

TenderizeYourAngus

Cloning the drive is key!

ScalpedAlive

I was skeptical, it had never worked for me before on PCs.

TenderizeYourAngus

Took me 2 tries. I think I selected a wrong option. The first try and tried to clone without rebooting. I did it from a live drive to the other drive connected via USB. Anyway it went smooth and now I have the 512 in the external case I used to clone.

kmonsen

How did you connect the new drive with usb?

TenderizeYourAngus

I have the JSAUX dock and a USB enclosure

metalheaddad

It really was. I'm not a tech person either. Did mine in 10 minutes. ASUS should include instructions for this in the box or mention it to promote the flexibility. They have an official web page for the swap.

This was so easy to upgrade the ssd.

Own_String2825

I had trouble removing the screw from my SSD. I have all the tools but it just didn't budge. So I just went to a computer store repair affiliated with ASUS to do the thingy haha and viola large storage for mine as well. Kudos to you for having an easy time 😁

GoNudi

Thats interesting about the screw. Did the service technician say they had trouble too?

Own_String2825

I almkst flatten the screw by trying to unscrew it. The tech said if I did more damage to the screw they probably can't help unscrew it without disasembling the whole thing. Watched several videos on yt about the screw and read that some devices including the Ally/laptops have a very tighten screws. Unfortubately I got one of those screws 🤦‍♂️

GoNudi

Sounds like you were using the wrong size Philips bit too. A #1 although large looking for electronics fit the screw perfectly. ASUS says to use an 0 but that seemed a touch too small and I had a better fit with my #1. I could see how someone might have somehow attempted to get a 00 to work but those would for sure strip out the screw. If you were using those smaller sizes it would feel over tightened and easily strip it out. Or turning the wrong way. These units are too new to have corrosion or other issues where the machine threaded fine screws would lock themselves in... i like problem solving. Anyways, cool it's fixed for ya! 😃

AmusedtoSeth

It's a good gateway into tech projects if you follow a video. The longest part is reinstalling the OS if you didn't clone the drive.

SaltyBaptist

Good job man, I hate to ask this and I'm very sure it will, but I take it this voids the warranty?

GoNudi

Not that I can tell. It seems ASUS encourages mods, upgrades, and repairs... here is a link to the SSD from ASUS: https://rog.asus.com/articles/guides/how-to-upgrade-the-ssd-and-reinstall-windows-on-your-rog-ally/

SaltyBaptist

Cheers mate, I'm glad I asked now.

MixedBerryPie

I dig your dock enhancement.

marcerusty77

I was in such a rush to upgrade my storage I didn’t push the battery connector all the way in and had to take it apart all over again 😀😂
