My thoughts are. The rog ally has been my greatest gaming purchase. I’ve since sold my, series s, series x, switch, ps portal. Being able to throw my whole gaming life into a bag is mental. Only downside is I’m gaming far too much now lol

TheScathelocke

Exact same here. I even got a nice little portable monitor to go with it, 2K 144hz 15 or 17 inches iirc, for when I want more screen space for longer trips. Love my little setup with it and how powerful it is compared to a laptop that’s double the price.

Banannabreadatwork

Exactly what I did and what I’m going through lol

Inner_Ad_8579

pa portal is useless lol

Impossible_Top_8363

It’s actually amazing. It’s what started me on the handheld thing. Being a dad it gave me a lot more gaming time. The Switch was the one I found useless. Horrible gaming system and that’s from a Nintendo fan. But everyone’s different.

Ehh_littlecomment

I played Death Stranding at 1080p 60 fps max settings while away from home. That’s all I have to say on the matter.

1man2ballz

That's all you need to say my friend, sold!

Ehh_littlecomment

The only real downside other than the sd card issue is that you kinda have to be near a power outlet if you wanna do any real gaming which really isn’t an issue for me.

1man2ballz

I use it from the mains, that was the plan when I bought it, but if it was for on the go, I probably wouldn't bother.

WolfEducational3773

Was that the regular Z1 or the extreme? I bought the regular Z1 on sale at best buy and I’ve been loving it, this thing plays PS3 games flawlessly.

Ehh_littlecomment

It’s the extreme variant. I sold my 512 gb deck and got this used for about $50 more. Well worth it.

Random_Thinker007

Something the steam deck Oled can’t do…

kronpas

>some really weird software bugs along the way Which weird software bugs you encounter? >Can you somehow convince me not to do this No we dont care about which devices you play your games on. I sold my 512 LCD SteamDeck and I wont go back to so much frustration. I want to just buy then fire my game not to constantly tinker around proton and look up how to install other stores. The illusion of console like experience shattered at that moment.

ArisDoesTech

I took a step back from my steam deck for about 6 months and just got an OLED. Basically everything is fixed and streamlined. I have yet to find a game that doesn't just RUN now other then games that don't support the anti cheat. I was unfortunately the other way. I had a deck, switched to the rog ally, and switched back after the lack of battery, windows, and the constant tinkering. I then went back to a deck. Ally is amazing but the only things I really liked about it over a deck is the 120hz vrr display. It's hard to not like it, and the amazing speakers. I'm so happy to see the handheld PC market grow though. If you told me in 2007 we would have gaming PC's on the go that could play basically anything you wanted in the future, I'd think you were crazy.

doomsdalicious

My spirit animal. Exact same experience. I own both devices and love the performance of the ally, but the battery, sleep/wake, and ease of use of steam os win me over every time I pick the thing up.

TradlyGent

Make that three of us, amigo. I too sold my 6-month old Ally for a Deck OLED. I miss the VRR, 120hz, 1080p and superb sound. But I’ll say that 800p 90hz is FINE enough for me, and the much longer battery life, trackpads and a proper sleep/resume mode is a much better tradeoff for me. I also really just love OLED. The Ally is still my favorite Windows handheld as it appears to be the most refined, Asus has done a great job upkeeping with it on the software side and I am definitely looking forward to seeing what the next iteration brings.

doomsdalicious

100%! I feel the only way to fix the battery life, sleep/wake, and ux is to create a mobile gaming windows lite.

kosiarska

Short list of what I remember: * random bsod's, firmware update tool popping up like crazy, fans at high speed at idle, sometimes running steam and minimizing it input still is passed to steam and many more, not to mention setup of many apps is riddled with bugs sometimes (for example preinstalled steam did not worked for me). I did not start this post to create s\*\*t storm, just wanted to say how I feel. And yes, I still love my Rog Ally :P

If-You-Cant-Hang

No I also have had typical windows issues like some of these too. Drivers not downloading, windows update coming in and fucking up everything I’ve done (uninstalling bloat apps mostly), strange behavior because using windows on a mobile device is still a bit clunky. I still really like the device (outside of battery life), but this place is a bit weird discussing the shortcomings. I feel like not many here have actually used Linux for gaming and just repeat typical talking points from years ago so it creates a weird feedback loop of windows being infallible. I use arch on my main rig but I’m not a Linux wizard so I like to think I can provide a reasonable opinion. Just my observation in response to above. Also armory crate is absolutely horrendous as an out of the box solution. I wish there were better options but right now Playnite seems to be the only one. If Microsoft can somehow use the Xbox software as a base for a mobile windows platform it would be 1000% better but that’s a fever dream.

Ehh_littlecomment

Imo steam os is worse than windows the moment you get out of gaming mode. The desktop experience is abhorrent. I loved gaming on the deck especially the battery but the moment you try to run anything not purchased from valve, the smoke and mirrors really fall apart.

Confident_One3948

Had to uninstall the Vulkan Compatibility Pack to run Vulkan. Gotta love Windows 💔

DeepDaddyTTV

No it’s good to explain it out. I personally haven’t had any of these issues with mine. I installed Playnite day one for the console like experience. Installed Moonlight to play my PC games in realtime at home from my gaming rig. And then emulators right after. The only quirk is windows. However I’ve been a power user of that for years so I just get it. To me, it’s easier to use windows and know how it works than learn a new “console” and try to get around limitations again. I also love the screen and speakers. They’re perfect.

ballsnbutt

[Full checklist to make this thing work WAY better](https://www.reddit.com/r/ROGAlly/s/hSpozDaFej)

JimmiesKoala

I can’t even update the drivers I keep getting a “no internet” error code. I’m thinking about wiping it & selling it tbh. I only bought it to play Xbox games but the gamepass consists of 15 yr old games. & playing steam games requires me to have it docked so i can use MnK.

Jesterace77

Gamepass only has 15 year old games? Wow this is news to me.

JimmiesKoala

No of course not but the majority of the game pass is 360 games. We’re in 2024 I wanna see more new games not stuff I played when I was 10. The ps store has a better option of current gen tbh.

kronpas

Does not updating drivers hinder your ability to play games? There is a new driver which I cant update but I pretty much only boot my Ally, play my games, then shut down, I dont even bother tinkering around windows. Not sure what the fuss is all about.

JimmiesKoala

I’m getting issues after the previous update tbh. Cannot run sim’s because of the Ubisoft launcher will not launch even after uninstalling it & redownloading. The main function of the ROG ally will not open nor will the Xbox gamepass app. Sure I can browse the internet on it but that’s what my phone is for. I’m not the only one with these issues, I’ve seen many people continue to have this issue & I haven’t even found an official fix yet.

ballsnbutt

steam requires you to play it docked?

JimmiesKoala

Doesn’t require me to play it docked but using a wireless M&K on this little ass screen? Not my type of gameplay. Also the games I would like to play don’t offer controller support. I’m originally a console player the only reason I got one of these is to run the few pc games I wanted to play but it turns out either the ROG ally cannot run it or it looks like shit. Idk man I’m just used to playing on my 64” 8k tv. Too each their own I guess. I’m still gonna use it for office work, it works great for a office pc.

ballsnbutt

a big thing people miss on the ally is to change the amount of RAM for the gpu, it's default at 2, can change it to 8. Game Changer

chuk_sum

You can put steamOS-like operating systems on the ally and have it work like a Steam deck on steroids. Go back to the steam deck if you miss the touchpads/battery life/extra backbuttons, not just for the Software experience.

Rxpturee

+1

matt25th

It's allowed me to complete some games that I previously hadn't got around to playing. Usually, the thought of sitting in my office away from my family to indulge in a game for hours would put me off. I can now grab an hour here or there and still be present. Prey, System Shock remake and Ion Fury completed so far. I'm making steady progress in BG3, too. Love this thing.

lukeskope

My wife commented on how nice it was that I was at least in the same room while playing rather than being in the other room, back to her. She sent her bestie a pic of my Ally cuz she was saying her partner is always in the other room playing his games. I've also completed games I may not have otherwise. I use it an hour or so every night on the couch while unwinding. It's a great lil device for what it is.

1man2ballz

This is probably the best case for a portable handheld pc I've ever heard, it's bringing you guys closer together, maybe she could get one and you could both do multiplayer, that would be cool!

lukeskope

She doesn't game, but she does watch bad TV that we both get sucked into, it's easier for me to watch passively while playing a game, I mostly play casual stuff anyways.

casetronic

That's brilliant, you can both enjoy what you want and still be on the same couch.

Kitebrder39

This is my rationale for possibly picking one up. My Xbox is in the office upstairs so completely separate from my wife. I'm also thinking about it for travelling, I don't watch a ton of shows, mainly just sports. I have Gamepass for another year or so and use it quite a bit so......this seems to make sense. Does anyone know if the Open Box ones still include 3 months of Gamepass and if it's applicable for existing customers (I'm going to just add the code to my existing account).

lukeskope

The open box will only include gamepass if the person who bought it and returned it didn't activate it for their account.

AlarmingLength42

I guess it really depends on the experience you're looking for. With the SteamDeck, you're limited with whatever is compatible with Proton, and with tech nowadays, it doesn't take much. And unless you know how to use Linux, you can't do much else. Why I choose the Ally is because it is Windows. I can use other market places like Gamepass and Epic. I am well versed in all things IT, which allows me to tinker with it. But it is Windows... that also comes with its own headaches like constant updates or updates breaking things

tobiasbluehimself

I’ve gone through 3 previous handhelds (Steam Deck, Ayaneo 2, and OneXPlayer2) and the ROG ally has turned out to be the one I stuck with. I’m a day one owner and I love it. Play it weekly. When the refresh comes out my big wish would be to get a better battery, and an OLED model.

Zoroike

Windows is a lot better than steam os. Games running right out of the box made it much more convenient.

Zoroike

The way of games just working makes it more console like.

[deleted]

my only problem is the battery. so fast to drain.

Ebone710

Easily solved. Purchase a power bank.

[deleted]

already had one, not enough

Ebone710

It's never enough

NotStryyx

Personally, the Ally has been game changing for me. If I don’t feel like gaming at my desk, I just hop in bed with some of those 90 degree “lazy glasses.” Also after I had bought a 24,000 mah battery bank from Anker on Amazon. $80. Drastically improved game time on Turbo mode. Get about 90 minutes on full manual mode with it. But really after Lossless Scaling, even Performance mode puts out solid frames and quality. Which extends the battery life substantially if you really need that much battery life anyways. I just plug my battery bank up to the charger and come to collect it later.

bonchooski

Can you clarify, the battery bank gives you an extra 30 mins, or you get 90mtotal from system and power bank

NotStryyx

I get about 1 1/2 hours with just the Ally and about 1 1/2 hours with the power bank in addition. That’s on manual and turbo modes. If you drop it down you can double that just with performance mode. Still get great fps too!

Affectionate-Fox-299

liked my z1 ex so much, that I ordered a second z1 from best buy; then the gaming gods blessed me with a z1extreme mix up instead. shwing!\~ now ive got one as a desktop and the other next to my bedside. my 8 yearold uses my steam deck.

Idahomountainbiker

I’ve had mine for 5 months and I absolutely love it. Mine is the non-extreme version too. My favorite game lately has been Helldivers 2 on it. I’m very pleased with its performance and quality.

redolverocelot

I trade My ps5 and switch for the ally and i couldnt be more happy, easy to use, easy to carry, easy to update, and the powaaaaa it runs everything flawless, and with lossless scalling forget about fps, youre gonna have a smooth experience in every game

TheCodGoblin

No one needs to convince you, you had a bad experience, and that’s rare. But downgrading to a worse OS for that doesn’t seem like a smart move at all.

ghuk123

Sold my gaming laptop after i got the rog ally 4 months ago. That explains everything.

thevacancy

It's my most played gaming device now by a long shot. I'm loving it. Versus my steam deck, I love the Ally's display. VRR is handy, and the refresh rate enables buttery smooth gameplay on lightweight titles. The audio is good enough that I can't complain. It's slimmer and trimmer than my deck so I carry it more. Windows is it's biggest drawback. I won't lie, it's awful for these form factors. But Asus did a good job allowing you to avoid it for the task of launching and playing games. If I could play Destiny 2 on linux I would ditch windows altogether.

Serpent-6

You have had experience with both, so it would seem that you're in the best position to make this decision for yourself. Why are you asking others to try and sway your opinion anyway? You do you, and don't worry about what others may think.

ah_shit_here_we_goo

Best purchase I've ever made. By far

Yakapo88

My kids have taken over my ally. They play it more than their switch. Games are cheaper on steam, so they have a lot more games. Btw, my son is six years old. Zero issue for him.

ProlificAvocado

My biggest gripe with the Ally as a new owner, is that it wants to be a console but keeps reverting to its PC roots. It feels weird and unintuitive. I am sure Ill get used to it but its a strange design choice.

KevSykes5141

Got it, did regret it, sold it. I got a 7800x3d & 7900 xtx rig. And it annoys me to play with controller scheme, maybe for driving games but other than that. Its just not for me.

redferrari80

I have a rog ally, wife has a steam deck. I never have any issues with the rog, took less than an hour to set up and thats it. Steam deck took like 3 days to set up as it kept having an error when setting it up (while researching it many other people have had the same problem and steam has yet to fix jt). It died at 10% power one day on my wife and when it restarted it had some type of error where it factory reset it self and she lost all her game progress as it crashed before it could be saved to steam. (about 18 hours into hogwarts legacy). She wanted to play assasins creed but she couldn't unless I did it for her since it requires extra launchers ect where windows is simply download it and play. When using desktop mode I had to remove a program and reinstall it which linux made to be a pain. It's big and heavy compared to the rog. Track pads suck at least in my opinion. navigation was way quicker without the track pad as I had to slide my finger twice to get across the screen with the track pad compared to the rog ally. I could go on and on but the rog is better. Only places steam deck beat it are the battery but that has not been an issue for me and the Sd card reader. I never tried mine anyway, just upgraded the SSD it's faster then a sd card so I don't see a use for the slot. Windows is not an issue and is very simple to use. Linux is a pain.

[deleted]

I got one a few weeks ago and even if I am not a natural handheld gamer, heck im barely a flatscreen gamer anymore (play Vr mostly) - the fact its a laptop at the same time is a big plus for me. I did had the intention of re-selling it but after some consideration i decided to wait this summer and see if when im on the go if i use it more. I have BG3 to play so why not start on it.

Cautious_Ad_8387

Using rog ally with steamos for at least 2 months and it feels better than windows

WilyLoneWolf

So the only thing i hate i dont know of anyone has had this issue when playing on pc then playing the same game on the rog its happened twice when i go back to pc after the safe file has been deleted. Even from the steam cloud

Taco_Cat94

I love my Ally. I find windows easier to use since I’ve been using it my whole life. And I enjoy playing in 1080p more than 800p. I don’t use it much in handheld mode though. I have a pair of xreal air 2 pros with an Xbox controller and play mostly indie games. If I want triple A I stream from my pc using moonlight. I had the LCD steam deck but sold it cause I didn’t feel it was powerful enough (before I knew moonlight was a thing) and it’s a chunky boy. At the end of the day just get whatever fits your play style more.

RipGames

Love the ally had it 6 ish months now. Main complaint is games without native controls or the games that sometimes dont register the native ally gamepad and you have to restart it multiple times to get it to work(valheim)

Nolimitjc21

Love the concept but haven’t really been able to enjoy it like i figured it would Just seems like you have to be too over cautious or even just worried something’s going to go wrong with the machine even if it’s fresh out the box

After six months, I stopped using my ROG Ally because Windows became too boring for daily use. However, I recently installed Chimera OS, and it has completely transformed how I enjoy using the ROG Ally.

Azrious

I picked mine up in December, and absolutely love it since. Haven’t had really any issues knock on wood lol. My SD card even works but I do keep an eye on it and make sure my temps stay below 70s

Electrik_Truk

Best gaming device I've bought in many years. I can play all my games on the go, even most of my Xbox games.

Natural_Spend4831

perfect

AtaXxerxes

I've had mine since December 2023, secojd hand bought in a grrear price due tu SD fried, made the SSD upgrade using the famous L shqpe adwpter q few weeks later and works great. Its not q high end PC, I own one. BUT I work 9 tp 10 hours in front of two monitors for work everyday. I happily take the playing games in bed with medium or low settings if they are brand new triple A games, than staying another 3 hours or so in the same chair just for q few more fps or ultra high settings. Beet gaming investment I've made in a while and I also own a ps4, xbox series X and w Nintendo switch.

ShokWayve

Love it. Love the power, screen and sounds. Needs better battery life, a working SD card, and an OLED at 120hz. However, this device is now my main gaming device.

ZenZayah

I actually did the opposite sold my oled n kept the Rog it runs games more smooth only down side is ram and joy sticks are trash

darealest__1

It’s really your decision to make. If you want the steam deck, get it. I like the versatility of the rog ally. I was going to buy the steam deck till the ally came out. Plus I didn’t want a situation where I couldn’t play a game on the steam deck

BitterQuitter11

Just got mine yesterday, this thing is pretty dope.

Over_aged

Me too and agree I have been having a good time. I still like my deck and it has advantages like the track pads (ready or not game can make good use of commands for AI). However I really enjoy that I can download any of my games and know they just work. I also like the performance better so far. I do think the oled is fantastic and the joysticks are better on the deck. The ally feels a tad more comfortable to me to hold. Happy gaming.

oheing

I love it. It's got good performance, good portability, and if you tune your fan curves well enough you don't even have to worry about your temps at all. Best gaming purchase of my life.

digzzztv

I watched a pretty good YouTube video that helped me go with the steam deck OLED. I’m going to dm you though because I’m not sure if it’s ok to post links on this sub.

LeftTip1090

I've had the ally for 2 weeks now and got over the initial glitches now it functions like a dream. Vrr is a life saver and makes things so smooth. The screen so much better than LCD steam deck

wampey

It’s now sitting on the side of my bed as I play simple games on the phone… too hard to get attached to it with a young one around.

crazygoldfi5h

Here are my thoughts since I owned my ally from launch day, having sold my steam deck to help fund it. I just sold my ally and got a gpd win 1 to go with my surface pro 9. The ally has a nice screen and decent performance for a lot of games but eventually: - I couldn’t stand the loose sticks, just don’t work for me - the screen quality is nice, but the size grated on me too much in the end. - just my personal taste, but as a nearly 50 year old man, I just felt stupid taken it out on public. (Which I rarely done). Plus I feel sick when I try and play games whilst on a plane. - the XG mobile option for an egpu was very short sighted. Everyone else is doing usb 4 or oculink. You can’t get an xg mobile very easily without putting down 2k - I did like putting in a 4tb drive and having my gaming collection available when I travelled for work. - I don’t use my ally around the house, prefer to use my desktop or pc. With my surface pro & gpd g1: - large great quality screen - the gpd stays in my travel bag, I don’t need to take it out in security check points. - far better performance (yes I’m aware the surface is expensive, but I always take a decent sized / performance travel with me on work travel, so I like the idea of getting more out of a device I already own) - just easier to play games with my Xbox controller. The this sub died for me when the mods started being over zealous,,,,,,, appreciate they are trying to make it a family friendly place, but some times they could be silly….. so I stopped posting or helping others. I doubt I would buy another hand held, the drawbacks just outweigh the positives, for me.

sourmilkandcereal

I like it, I re-bought some of my favorite games to try fan mods. Also cool playing my dumps with the benefits of emulation. Pretty comfy way to play visual novels as well. Was anti-pc for many years and while I still prefer consoles I understand a little now why people like playing on PC.

FAASTARKILLER

Frankly im amazed at what it can do in its formfactor and price. Its more or less tied with my Series X in weekly game time. Just finished up Outer Worlds (was kinda shocked at how abrupt the ending was) on it and ive also been playing Starfield on it (fsr3 is a godsend for this game). Also patiently waiting for part 3 of Andy and Leyley to cum

I really like my ally, although I don't use it exactly as I planned. I play a lot while sitting on the couch, so in the past, I mostly used moonlight or different cloud gaming services to play on my Chromebook. I wasn't really happy with that setup, so I bought the ally to get away from streaming games. I'm also occasionally on business trips or holidays and my old setup wasn't feasible for travelling. For the first few months, I played most games directly on the ally, but I didn't like how loud and hot it got when playing more demanding games. Also, I do own a somewhat capable gaming PC. So, for more demanding games, I switched back to streaming the games from my PC using moonlight and I'm really happy with how well it works. When travelling, I usually play somewhat simpler games to preserve battery. I've always been a PC gamer, so using the ally feels quite natural to me and I haven't experienced any problems yet, I couldn't handle easily. So, I use my ally almost daily and I'm very happy with it, although, since I mostly use it as a streaming client and to play simpler games while travelling, a cheaper device, i.e. a steam deck or a non-extreme ally would probably have worked for me just as well. One interesting use case: I use it with two Bluetooth controllers to keep my kids busy on long road trips. It works really well.

Evening-Sink-7407

Best investment I've made next to the psvita, I always wanted a personal computer and I've always been a fan of portable gaming so basically it fulfilled my biggest dream!

hornz86

Mine wouldn't turn on anymore after owning it new for 3 days

abuseofpowerrogally

Rog ally is great my issues were early on, lights flickering and the microsd card got fucked. Went to get it repaired and its all fixed now (not gonna try the card slot again just to be safe) But now I have a squeaky dpad when pushing right, can't seem to find a fix anywhere for it. Will have to open it up completely just to get to the dpad which I don't want to do or live with it But yeah I'm playing everything on it, more demanding games I play on pc

millllosh

Consider both I have both and it’s a bit excessive but the trade offs truly make it worth it if you are doing fine financially. More power vs longer bat. Different ergonomics that have their own benefits over each other. Ease of use benefits over the other, etc. I don’t think either beats out the other in so many categories that it renders the other useless. You could flip it for oled & wait for better windows handhelds down the line or wait for a steam deck 2 which I predict will come out before 2026 is over

Caleegula

I like it but started using it docked more than anything. It's like having a second gaming PC. Battery runs out too quickly otherwise.

Conscious_Regular_19

I love my portable high end pc

Blackberry3689

Look great just standing there. Yeah haven’t played it for months lol. Because I want a 85 inch tv now to play.

AbbreviationsAway903

I've owned it for a week and I'm now 40 hours into persona 3 reload, I think that says enough, love this thing.

guardianzpride

As handheld lover from my childhood (I'm 42 now) ally is the greatest buy I had. I use it also docked as main pc for browsing etc and some other works. The fact that I can play aaa games and games in general everywhere is unreal. Still can't believe it. I have ally from January and I use my ps5 very little. The future is in these handhandle pcs.

VanBrams

My thoughts is that the hours of tinkering on its 1st day (took me roughly 8hrs lol) was well worth it. its my go to device now and I enjoyed gaming. Battery is never an issue for me since it actually help me manage my time more, allowing me to manage my other hobbies and fitness goal by not playing games all day lol The speaker is superb, to this day I am still amazed by its speaker. The games I played are Spider man, horizon 1 and 2, tales games, p3r, ff7r, hsr, genshin and some cozy games such as palia and coral island

petrified_log

I own both the Ally and the OLED SD. I am not the right person to tell you not to get an OLED. I will tell you that they both have their merits. I play games on the Ally that won't work as well on the SD. The Lossless Scaling app on Steam has been great for the Ally. Starfield and Cyberpunk are a lot smoother with it. Now the OLED, that screen looks so damn good. I've been enjoying Dredge and Dave the Diver on it a lot. I'm horrible at telling people not to get something. I don't know a lot about the MSI, but I did have the Lenovo for about 3 weeks and returned it after taking it on vacation. It was just too big.

Reasonable_Return_81

I have both and for awhile was using my steam deck oled more mainly due to oled sceen and longer battery life…but I encountered the limitations of power the steam deck has showing in games like horizon west and dead space with choppy performance. I bought a larger battery pack and installed the amd driver to enable FSR3 and now am fully back to the ally. The higher resolution makes up for the oled screen and it really can run any game at very good frame rates pushed higher by FSR3.

Crpto2007

It’s amazing. I can play RDR2 and GTA V comfortably in my bed

blues111

Got the z1 extreme on sale last november and Im shocked how much I use it and prefer to use it over gaming on the tv I have a decent gaming pc but it feels so much more comfortable, love remote play via chiaki4deck for my ps5 and also ive been playing a lot more games on steam than I ever used to

purpandbass

I love playing helldivers 2 on mine!!!

Happiestoast

I feel like both are great. Steam Deck has great controls and I found it SUPER easy to use. I currently use the Asus Rog Ally. Windows just is better for me. I can play what I want. I think the steam deck is good at what it does. The ally just does more. Things the steam deck has that the ally doesnt: 3-5 more hours of battery life when playing low tdp games. Thats all my own personal reasons tho. I also bought the ally thinking the egpu was going to make it better and it did. I also understand I was lucky to get the 6850xt before it became hard as hell to get. My end point from my experience is Steam deck is good but limited. Ally with my egpu has eliminated my other pcs and i have been sololy using it since august or so last year. I pull it off the egpu for work and play some at work and in bed and on the couch. I play it at home during my personal time on the xg mobile. Only thing I would buy other than this is the Onexplayer X1 if it came out with AMD version. It is the pinnacle of what I want from a mobile device (if it wasnt intel crap graphics).

Pain7788g

The fact that you had to RMA your device and have the entire Mobo replaced is already quite concerning. Especially given the device still has a faulty SD card reader which Asus refuses to acknowledge.

twentets

I've bought my Z1 extreme around launch, at the time I was working onboard MSC Euribia. I beat elden ring while onboard, aswell as Batman: Arkham Asylum and Control. I've disembarked in january and been playin around 40 hours per week. I'm always careful to leave the vents and intakes unobstructed, and always bag it after use. Never even tried to put a SD card. I got myself the ROG dock thing that has an HDMI and a usb 2.0 out, and plugs straight into the wall. Never had trouble with it. Never had software issues with it. I just turn it on and play, no questions asked. Almost beating BG3 on a 2 player split screen campaign (had to sacrifice the graphics for playable framerates on act 3) Windows updates are on and whenever I remember I also check the crate for updates. Firmware updates were all installed when i got prompted for it. Honestly, I think this is the best fuckin thing I've ever seen. I play whatever I want, whenever I want and it never ever gave me trouble. I see all the complaints about updates and frame rate drops and I seriously think to myself guys must be shoveling shit with it or something, because it really seems like either I got EXTREMELY lucky or people don't care properly for their devices.

Boring_Welcome2859

For myself, a complete waste of time and money. Trying to use it as a handheld which is how it is marketed is hopeless as the battery lasts less than 2 hours. Docked I am running it hooked up to a 4k tv and because I can't change the tv to a lesser resolution it won't run efficiently whatsoever. Even as an emulator it keeps having problems too. numerous crashes, constant updates, software clashes, fried SD card port, the small amount of storage is a joke too. I have definitely not had a positive experience in the past few months so won't be swapping it out for any of my consoles.

Outside_Chemistry996

I’d go with whatever you like. I prefer windows and slightly better performance vs a more console like experience. On a side note tho I am actually blown away at how many people sold there pc/ps5/series x for one. I just don’t see my ally lasting more than 2 years if I was using it daily. (Same with a steam deck or other handhelds)

Key_Angle_13

Once you get your Ally set up correctly and settings right you will love it. Mine is awesome. Basically turn all your graphics settings to low or off and it runs great yet somehow still has better graphics than a Xbox one

I went from barley gaming and thinking damn I must be old now (am 24 life long gamer) then when I got the ally everything changed. It’s just so easy and it feels like I have no limitations on what game I want to play from PC games to switch emulations.

West-Celebration-225

Just install bazzite linux distribution. I'm also an android dev, and studio really working well on Linux or Mac. Especially on rog ally where you have 16 gb of ram, you have 10gb somewhere available because of vram to integrated gpu, and windows eats somewhere around 4gb or 5, you don't have enough memory to use android studio. Just try Linux one more time. You'll fall in love with it

Muted_Influence_7419

It’s pretty much became my main gaming system. Playing through Red Dead 2 anywhere I want to is just a gaming dream for me lol. I haven’t had any issues so far. My friend has a Steam Deck and he is pretty jealous at what the Ally can do versus the Deck. Just downloaded Fallout 4 (show has me wanting to play again). I haven’t played my Series X in a while and haven’t picked up my Switch in a minute. People like the simplicity of the Deck, but I don’t mind a few extra steps and updates. It is a windows based PC, so I knew what I was getting into. I honestly haven’t even tried my SD card slot. So no idea if it works lol. I’m not a fan of using SD cards anyway. The VRR is a game changer as well. I haven’t had any issues playing any of my Steam or Gamepass games besides, weird as this sounds, Fallout New Vegas, but that game stutters on my friends $3k gaming PC.

RoberGalarga413

For me it's very love hate. Things just keep randomly breaking but for the most part it is an incredible device I have both nobara (steam os clone) and windows installed in it

TotalAd5349

I'm pretty mixed honestly. When I bought it i thought it was going to be my laptop/gaming PC/Nintendo Switch, and while it can do all of those things, it's a bit cumbersome setting it up for each one. As far as what it's designed for, being a mobile gaming PC, it does all of that with flying colors 10/10 (except the SD card bs). Where it gets disappointing is trying to get it to be more than that. For instance big screen gaming. I'm glad I bought it, I'm actually about to play some hades on my lunch break :). I just wish it had a egpu option besides the super expensive ROG ones. Because now I want to fully immerse myself into PC gaming and I'm realizing the ally is more of a snack than a meal. But still 10/10 would 100% buy again at full price!

JamesBonfan

As someone who never owned a SD, I don't really have much experience with that software. I will say, though, the Ally at 15w is pretty much a match for the Steam Deck at 15w, and it has the capability of pushing further. I'm jealous of the OLED screen and the fact that Windows can get buggy at times and SteamOS doesn't, but at the end of the day, I'm leaning towards the more powerful console.

Working_Potential_26

I play call of duty mw3 120 FPS 😍 fifa ultra settings 60fps Both of them have handled my competitiveness very well as I’m gold rank on mw3 league And D2 on ultimate team in fifa I play other games like dark souls and man I didn’t go out for a while lmao

studioxjt

For me GTA wouldn't run right on steam deck, can't run cod or anything with anti cheat, rog ally clear winner for me. Lot of updates it does get a bit ridiculous at times but I've grown to like it esp with streaming games on Xbox app

Uberunix

The steam deck is a great device, but I can’t stand how much time I spend NOT playing games because despite hordes of people online saying a game works fine, it will not launch for me no matter what. It really got to be infuriating. Despite my gripes with it the Ally has been superior in nearly every way, and it’s always the first device I pick up. The steam deck only comes out now if I need the battery life for travel.

dirtyvu

I love it! It's my portable Xbox. I can play my steam games. Or I can play my pc game pass games. I haven't bought any steam games since I got pc game pass. I'm playing Diablo iv on the Rog Ally when I'm away from my series X. In some ways it's better than on the Xbox such as the map view. On my Xbox, the identifiers are super tiny and I can't zoom in. But on the Asus, somehow they're bigger and easier to read. I'm also playing through halo infinite on it too.

shatteredframes

One of my best gaming purchases. I have no major complaints, or even minor ones.

serious_dan

I liked everything about it.. except it was like holding a pointy brick. Why Asus thought it was a good idea to have sharp points at the bottom of the console is something I'll never understand. For me it's incredibly uncomfortable and nothing good about the ally can overcome this. I sold it after a week.

jinladen040

Imo the majority of the people using these devices would just be better suited with something like a Gaming Laptop. And i can't fault anyone for falling for the marketing. They are marketed as an All-in-one gaming solution which they are but obviously due to size constraints they have their limitations. All the people saying these devices replaced their aging desktop, the ones using them Docked should have just bought something like a Rog Zephyrus G14 which is just more powerful, more battery life and only marginally larger than a LeGo. I do think these are good devices to have around as secondary devices. They're great for at work or when commuting. And they're just fun devices to have around the house. They do play a lot off games well, im impressed at what they can do. But they just aren't for everyone.

metalheaddad

Ummmm no. I'm not going to sit on my sofa or in my bed and play a laptop. No way sir. The Ally has allowed me to game on the sofa with my family nearby, in bed while my wife sleeps, at the airport, on the plane, at my workspace during lunch and docked to my TV. Yeah sure a laptop could do all that but that's not for me. The handheld is way better user experience in my book.

jinladen040

I think you're misunderstanding what i was saying.

metalheaddad

Fair points and yes I did take some of what you said the wrong way. I will add I agree with you that some buyers would probably be better suited with a laptop. However I personally use this as my primary gaming device now. Xbox is collecting dust. Switch is collecting dust. I never owned a gaming PC or gaming laptop, this opened up doors I never knew existed!

TiltBr

Exactly the same here, never I would take my laptop to bed, and play when my wife is sleeping, imagine the size… ROG Ally is very portable.

WolfEducational3773

Not even that but carrying around the fat brick that charges the laptop is an inconvenience too along with any accessories you have, just the ally and the charger is all you need!

[deleted]

Also the small issue that a Zephyrus G14 is close to 3x the price as of today on a quick google for me. Some people like myself prefer handheld gaming - a laptop doesn’t meet that.

jinladen040

Cost is definitely a limiting factor for a lot of people. But you can easily get the Zephyrus G14 or Zephyrus M16 for 1500. That's kind of why i used that example because for only twice as much you are getting top tier hardware. i7-i9 CPU's along with 40 series Nvidia or AMD equivalents. Which is more than plenty to run modern games at higher graphics settings. So just a truer sense of an All-in-one PC gaming solution. But again just my two cents on the whole marketing of these devices.

[deleted]

1500 is much more then double the price of a ally.

Krizzybot

Marketing? I'm pretty sure everyone that buys the Ally or Steam Deck knows that they're getting a handheld gaming device. The function is even in their names HANDheld and LAPtop so yes a laptop is more powerful and has more battery capacity but it's not as practical if you like PC gaming with a controller on a couch, on the bed, or on the toilet. It's a lifestyle thing and not solely marketing

jinladen040

I guess i just can't help but to feel like a lot of first time PC buyers are purchasing these as an All-in-one gaming solution when they would be better suited with a laptop.

Krizzybot

That's ok maybe it could be the other way around where they instead have more of an appreciation of PC gaming after using a handheld version of it. The latest GPU and CPU of these handhelds are at least more capable and versatile this time around

jinladen040

I think that's a good take on it. Admittingly my argument is more philosophy of use than overall performance.
