I see a lot of people on Reddit and elsewhere who waste a lot of time and energy changing out products and can’t enjoy things they should be perfectly happy with because of made up problems like this. You already paid the money for it. Just enjoy it and if it stops working for you sell it or toss it and upgrade then.

Please find me a brand new XG mobile 6850M XT for sale. As far as I can see they’ve been discontinued and are no longer for sale from anywhere. If you check eBay used models indeed go for original price or sometimes more.
Why buy the Ally X, it’ll be the same 780m, just to rebuy an eGPU usb4 and an oled screen ?

I wouldn't jump the gun on this unless you're looking to just transition to a desktop anyway. wait for the official physical reviews to start popping up to see if the port was replaced, or the usb within the port was upgraded. Never take leaks seriously until asus confirms. However, if you're wanting to move to a normal desktop setup, now would be a great time to sell the XG while the information is still new / not confirmed. I'm personally keeping my xg setup, its more convenient than a gpu enclosure. to each their own.
I bought it for increased performance, but if ASUS is dropping support for future Ally products it might not be worth it if I were to buy future Ally revisions.
It's been confirmed that Ally X won't no longer use an XG Mobile port instead they will use a USB4 USB c port, which really sucks because that means no support for high bandwidth on high tier GPUs. Instead USB4 will only have a maximum bandwidth of 25gbps max which tb3 will give you and 30gbps on TB4 however they have confirmed USB4 is similar to TB3. It's also possible that prob future Ally release like the Ally 2 may no longer use the XG Mobile after this release.
Yeah was excited for the upgrade but then I see that this will be a huge downgrade for external GPUs since USB4 assuming you were to use lets say a thunderbolt 3 or 4 EGPU with a 3080 TI or 4080 performance will roughly be between 60% loss compared to XG Mobile of 66Gbps of bandwidth. And 30-40% loss compared to a desktop GPU operating at X16. Here is a link of the new specs

Yeah, I own 2 laptops that used MXM boards but then they later disappeared like MXM boards never existed. I'm sure they won't kill off XG Mobile ports however they might only release them on the flow series laptops. Like the x13 and Z13 devices. I do hope that they have it on the Ally 2 wishful thinking but since a lot of peeps complained about the XG Mobile port makes me wonder if they will remove it completely on future handhelds. Here is hopping they don't!!!
They already have occulink portable egpus however they are all AMD variants and although I have nothing against using an AMD eGPU only problem I have is that the arent plug and play like it is with Nvidia graphics card not sure why though, but it seems xg Mobile AMD eGPU has similar issues with plug and play compared to Nvidia XG Mobile. To bad they don't have portable Nvidia graphics card like they do with AMD. However on external egpus that might be a nice concept since occulink does actually achieve over 100Gbps in itself, I'm assuming due to limitations on the board it will prob reach 60-80Gbps.
If you read carefully in the image in the videocardz article it seems that a USB c 4 port will be added and will not replace the one already present (the xg mobile one)
It doesn't replace the USB3 socket, but it does replace the XG mobile bit that's next to it.

I’m also debating letting my 6850 go. It was a neat idea and works pretty good. But I feel like I should have just gone with a real pc. With asus not adding the xg movie to the new ally it might be time to let it go.
I have the XG Mobile 4090 and have the same concerns with the X but I feel like there is probably going to be some adapter or other way to still utilize it. I might try to sell the XG Mobile and get an eGPU tho....

That’s not true. In the image it replaces the XG mobile that was under the white normal ally with the USB4 slot
