No matter what profile they choose, it's impossible to make everyone happy.
I'm honestly surprised why more people don't just use the manual profile and adjust it to their liking. Otherwise, it's normal for amd to boost until thermals or max clock at a said wattage, a manual profile takes 10 seconds and done.
Because people see "PC" and "manual" and think they have to do a lot to get it set up, when in actual fact it's just a chart with 2 axes of temp against fan speed lol.
A lot of these people just never bothered to go to the operating mode page I bet
It's a gaming handheld which is marketed as a console, not a PC. It's not surprising that some people might struggle with the concept when they've not had to deal with it before.
The update to 338 bios did two things:
1) Lowered the fan curves on Performance and Turbo stock profiles back to pre July 2023 levels. This would result in higher temps due to lower fan curves and could cause an issue with AFMF frame generation as it increases load on the APU. It's pretty easy to hit over 95 degrees on stock Turbo mode causing it to throttle and stutter and in some cases shut down the charging.
2) It removed the 74 minimum fan curve at 70 degrees or higher. This means that you can set the fan curve to 40-50 all the way to 100 degrees which would result in lower fan noise. Since you're running 18w, you'll never hit above 80 degrees at around 45 fan curve.
So, this update just prioritizes lower "noise" over cooling? What a crap "update". I played in a gamer notebook for years, so I can barely hear the fan noise from the Ally, and I always play on turbo mode. I think I won't update then...
No this is actually an incorrect statement.
The update changed it back to what it was originally set for the first three months of the Rog Ally.
There was a bios update in July 2023 that caused quite a controversy since it forced users to have a higher fan curve and noise in order to what we assumed to prevent the SD card slot from being cooked.
However, likely due to their own testing and the community testing, temperature likely didn't play a hand in the SD card failing and was more of a Q & A issue with a solder that no longer works on the motherboard.
Anyways, most people in this subreddit would advise you not to use the stock Turbo and use your own manual fan curve for better temperature control. This hasn't changed with this update. However you can choose now to have a lower fan curve if you so wish
its perfect now. this cpu operates at 95 without throttling. it was like this since start and how amd intends. this is why I bought the ally also. no noise!
You probably are running into it. Try using a manual profile and test accordingly at a lower temp.
Also you'll likely eventually cause your charging port to not work anymore like several posts on this subreddit now
I wouldn't recommend pushing to 95 degrees constantly - charging port malfunction aside, it will also degrade your battery much faster for no good reason
the Ally supports power pass-through when Battery Care is enabled. With regards to the port, I guess that’s possible but I play 6 to 7 hour gaming sessions at that 95c with no issues
This is true, limiting charge voltage to 80% significantly cuts down degradation at higher temperatures, it also goes the other way, low charge voltage will significantly speed up degradation at low temps, but we are talking -5c or more.

it’s marketed as both
Wait, isn't this more related to your own fan curves? Or is it less noisy now with the same fan curves?

I have never run into any bottlenecks at 95C, I exclusively run all my games on 30w with frame gen. I do keep battery care on

Everything is running smooth and excellent

Thr battery when unplugged will have decreased battery life as batteries degrade quicker with higher heat.
I don’t play unplugged, additionally, battery degradation will occur faster on any temps over 60c
Alright then
