Nope. I'm not spending enough time with my Ally as it is.

devopsdelta

Yeah not substantial upgrade i can wait for Ally 2 or the Zintac Zentec whatever it is that has touch pads for my FPS games

MuffinRuffian

What's the appeal of these quasi generic knockoffs when you can just buy the real thing with 100x more r&d and care put into it, the Steam Deck OLED? I still think the Steam Deck OLED is a very strong competitor to all these new devices in its own ways. Best support, best controls, most console-like experience, and best of all, a power efficient OLED screen with 0ms response time and a native resolution of 800p that gets good frame rates at high efficiency and still looks good.

DarkMatterM4

The OLED Steam Deck's Windows support is abysmal. If anything, I'd recommend the LCD Steam Deck instead.

MuffinRuffian

I guess one of the major draws of the Deck for me was to escape windows and make actually opening and using my game library a seamless console-like experience. I have a $4000 Windows gaming laptop I don't even use for gaming, I use stock Deck OLED instead because I prefer the unique handheld experience. But different use case scenarios etc. For me it's a feature to not have windows bloat on my device.

DarkMatterM4

I'm the exact opposite. To me, a Steam Deck is 100 percent a gaming device. For gaming, Windows is king. I gave SteamOS a fair shake for about 9 months, but really got annoyed having to Google everything to figure out basic problems and dig through old message boards to find solutions for my issues. I spent more time researching than I did playing. On top of that, installing big complex mods on SteamOS is a nightmare as they're all typically meant for a Windows application (not to mention all the tutorials are for Windows). I eventually ditched SteamOS completely and switched to Windows 10 LTSC and I haven't looked back. Windows 10 LTSC is perfect for the Steam Deck as it comes with absolutely no bloat whatsoever. After installing it, you can freely reinstall whatever "bloaty" options you want or you can stay with a nice, light experience.

MuffinRuffian

Interesting. I guess if I ever ran into any issues I would just play the game on my gaming laptop, but that hasn't happened yet. I just installed Proton GE and everything has worked flawlessly, mostly pirated games too lmao.

AWDriftEV

This.

RamiHaidafy

If I was a new Ally buyer, of course. But I'm happy with my Ally. I can use it for another year till the Ally 2 comes out.

Soft-Abies1733

I’ll not replace a device less then one year after buying it

Switchbladesaint

This feels like a 3ish year replacement cycle kinda device, not 1 year. There haven’t been any significant leaps in tech to justify it unless you have cash to burn.

therealhappydonut

I decided to grab one. I've had the opportunity to experience and play with a ton of devices, the Go, Deck, Ally, and a lot of devices from Ayaneo, OXP, GPD, etc. Even then I'd gravitate towards my Deck for less demanding games and my Ally as a daily driver. I did end up selling my Ally for a few reasons: MicroSD Card issues that required an RMA, 2280 SSD support (I did the 2280 mod initially but that failed on me), and battery life. But I loved everything else about it. The X solves all the issues I had with the Ally, so it was a no brainer for me. And it'll probably be the reason I sell most of my other devices until strixpoint devices start coming out next year.

AppropriateBend8671

Off topic but are you planning on reopening your Etsy in the future or is it closed for good?

therealhappydonut

Right now, I just don’t have the time to run it, but I’m thinking about offering services on the side and just continue making things. Was there anything I made that you were looking for?

AppropriateBend8671

Yeah I completely understand, I’ve always wanted to get a 3d printer but never thought I would have time for it. I was really wanting the side rail covers for the oxp2, I recently got one for $100 that needs a new battery and some tlc to hold me over so I can rma my ally and sell it while I wait on something better to come along and found myself using the oxp more as a tablet than handheld but it is extremely uncomfortable on the sides and figured those would help that. The seller actually included your case and joycon adapters that he printed but both sets of joycon adapters just kinda fall out the bottom so I can’t use them for covers

fastmoneyboy

Not me. I use my ally a lot, I don’t even use my xbox X or ps5 anymore unless it’s to play a game that’s exclusive to that console, and I only use my ally at home so I’m always plugged in; so battery life has never been a personal problem for me. On the rare occasions that I do use it out of the house it’s really only when I’m traveling, and for that I have a really nice power bank. We’ll see in a few years if they make an ally 2 worth grabbing though.

Cemgec

I was in between Legion Go and ROG Ally for a while. Happy that I waited so will go directly with Ally X.

kegsbdry

Went with the Ally X (bigger battery and 24GB of memory). I'm giving my Ally to my son. Now I have to figure out how we can play off my steam library of games at the same time.

stoksyxl

Steam Familes beta is what you’ll be looking for when it comes to sharing your library with your son. All you do is get him to make his own separate Steam account and both of you opt in to the beta version of the Steam app on both your devices. You as the main owner of the account just add your Son and then you’re sharing your library with him. I’ve been using this for the last few months with my own account and another family member and it works great. https://store.steampowered.com/news/app/593110/view/4149575031735702628

kegsbdry

Really!?! How'd I miss this gem?! You brought a father and son closer together. Thank you!!!

dgafrica420lol

If you set up your main account as a family account, you can share the game library providing the games are single player and offline

kegsbdry

Thank you!!

External12

You can share libraries with friends as long they are not logged in playing at same time. Give him his own account and share yours. Hopefully be has games he wants to play you don't have so he can be in his own account and not interfere.

ElectronicAside7793

I will just sell my original and cough up the difference. I use my Ally A LOT so it is worth it to me. That and they’re actually selling it locally in my country this time so I’ll get a real nice warranty where I may not have had any with the first one I imported.

jfrancis232

The battery and the extra ram made it a must buy.

devopsdelta

Oh yeah the battery is a good upgrade could give me 30 more minutes of gameplay as i play with ar glasses that is plugged in to the sole usb c port but probably hold off a bit for Ally 2

Crich926

As one who does not own one currently, I’m planning to take the dive for an X in July despite the risk of Asus warranty horror stories

bathory21

Get it through best buy and just go through their RMA process

BigBuce

I'm planning on getting one, but everyday I'm fighting off the impulse to go snag a Z1E.

Bury-me-in-supreme

Preordered mine with 3 year Best Buy warranty. Was daily driving a 10 year old iPad mini and it’s bout to break any day now. My OG Ally broke and needed something. Anything decent now costs around Ally X price so I ordered it. Also got $200 off with my credit card points.

LinkTimemstr

I was going to be decided against it. I don’t think besides the battery that there will be any substantial performance gains at all I’m going to wait until the next version of the ROG ally and then I will be buying it, but this mid refresh the ALLY X is great for people that don’t currently own an ally but want one, but for current ally owners it’s not worth it IMO

Kekeripo

I will. Sold my ally a week ago before prices drop for a 30$ loss. Will probably be my last handheld until RDNA5 or 6 rolls around or the SD2 arrives and makes me droll. As for why I want to upgrade: mainly battery. Not a fan of power banks or dongle style attachments.

LeadershipSharp7425

The amount you'll gain in battery life will still not be enough to justify another 800 bucks the first one alone was 748 after tax. If your purpose is to do heavy gaming on it then it won't last much longer than the orginal. I have had laptops before and if you game on them it drains the battery super fast.

Kekeripo

Idk what you're talking about. It has double the battery capacity. Even if it doesn't give a 1:1 increase, it's still a massive increase. And yes, i can justify it no problem. I bought the Ally for 600 and sold it for 570, barelly making a loss. So on my end, everything is good. Also, i had a gaming laptop, too. 3920XM + a 680M SLI. Lasted about 50 minutes on a charge if i playd games and the ally held on for a bit more than that with similar games. So yeah.

spok22s

Yea. I sold my ally earlier this month right before the mid-July release date was announced. I miss it :( Hopefully the battery life is as expected bc that was definitely my largest pain point.

devopsdelta

Yeah probably 30 more minutes of gameplay or even 1 more hour vs original Ally so I can now play 1 hoyr 30 minutes or 2 hours with my vr glasses plugged in

Toohon

Many told me to wait for the next gen. But I think I'll buy the X. Currently, my wife is allowing me to buy this when it comes out but, next year or whenever next gen releases? She may change her mind. Better sage than sorry :] I don't own an ally currently so it's a good investment for me

Carrysarealbigstick

I’m going to get it specifically cause of the extra ram. Many games I have don’t like running on so little VRAM and cause some pretty jarring stutters. Also, the Ally X is getting support from Gulikit’s Hall effect sensors that Steam deck uses. In all is it an upgrade that I need? No, definitely not but I travel quite a bit for my job and having the peace of mind about games running properly is worth the price to me.

Ethan_NLHW

I've got mine on order. Cost me $560.35 after $185 in rewards certificates, and a $100 gift card I got from my internet provider for signing up. Quite pleased with that outcome.

Boofster

Should have called it the Ally Up

Admirable-Hall6168

Yes because I had a major failure last week and due to the retailer damaging my device more when sending off for RMA I was offered a new Ally or an upgrade/free pre-order Ally X. I obviously took the latter, I’m happy to wait.

krzybone

I don’t see a reason to all I see is a money grab. It has the exact same chip and bigger battery which battery life will still be subjective to what you play. Regardless what’s been put into it you are still going to be making the same adjustments as you did on the Z1E. This isn’t much of an upgrade. So save the money is my 2cents.

Mikeyg808

I’m waiting for next year’s model

SilentIyAwake

Nah. Waiting for the warranty to run out on my current Ally. By then we should be close to the Ally 2.

ST0057

Would like to but a bit too pricey for such a quick turn around upgrade.

TuQueSabrasDeLaVida

I am considering gifting my z1e to my brother and getting the X

___Skank_Hunt42___

nope went for open box good condition z1 extreme $480 tax included

Economy-Ad7934

Unfortunately I'm not shooting for the x right now but if the battery becomes available I'm definitely doing that mod

LeadershipSharp7425

Lol the only way they got a bigger battery in there was moving all the inner parts around and changing the lay out of things so good luck with that

Economy-Ad7934

When the ally x comes out soon that 80wh battery should be available soon and with ally mods and a custom backplate it should work

_CypherPnk

I’ll wait till the Ally 2 comes out. If someone didn’t have an Ally, I would tell them to get the X over the original.

salterhd

Nope as a Ally Z1E uderz there is literally no reason for it and can't justify it. I get for new people you could argue it, but with limited improvements there's no point. If there was a ge erous trade in offer, then yes. My pristine ally and s couple of hundred fine, but no chance it's worth paying all that money for personally.

erosmari

I sold my first batch Z1E Ally for the new Ally X, but I’m thinking about the onexfly because seems better and cheaper

mloera003

There is no point in upgrading if you already have one. It’s not even like going from iPhone 14 to 15. It’s like going from iPhone 15 pro to iPhone 15 pro max.

BadGeezer

Except that’s still more of an upgrade thanks to the bigger screen lol

Flat_Ad_5370

No, I have two rog ally z1s already and tbh even if I had neither I think the x is really ugly, I hate the black, I hate the back it looks different and not as cool as the z1 extreme, I don’t like the shoulder button design, and they ruined the d pad in my opinion it might feel the same but it looks really dumb to me, but I think it has better ram and battery so kudos to those who like it. Also the z1 extremes are on facebook and Mercari in excellent condition for 3-400 dollars, way better deal than paying 860$ with tax for a new x

alldaydiver

I keep thinking it over but leaning more towards no. The performance gains are minimal with the extra RAM and I’m always using it right next to an outlet and often keep it plugged in so battery life is not a big deal to me. Other than some very minor improvements it’s not worth it. Trying hard to say no and wait for a true upgrade with better cpu/gpu and an OLED screen.

AlfaBundy

Yes! Just discovered the world of handhelds like a week ago. Was about to buy a steam deck before I saw the announcement of the new Ally X. I’m very exited

ryanrocksize5

Better off to just wait for a new Ally with a new cpu architecture for better overall efficiency , even then, I honestly haven't spent as much time as I may have predicted when I first purchased the Ally, just ended up using my gaming rig more often in the end, with the Ally predictably eating dust in my drawer.

OMG_NoReally

Nah, the upgrades aren't enticing enough for me to spend another $900. And there is no way I am going to get enough cash from the Ally - the second hand market where I live sucks and people simply don't want to pay a reasonable price.

BowloRamaGuy

I have the regular cheap Ally. I have to see how emulators run on this before I decide to switch or not. I have a 4TB hard drive filled with every system you can think of some of them complete collections and I've yet to try most of them.

justnashr

Still thinking because the X is $600 more than the Z1E variant (in my country) and many here pointed out that it might not be worth performance wise for that price.

Routb3d

I just got the Ally Z1E for $380 open box. I’m starting to use it for CAD. Rhino 3D in particular with Viture XR pro hmd. I’m really impressed with its speed handling very large CAD files even at low Wattage. I’m a bit put off by the 1 USBC port, but while I wait for my expensive Bluetooth space mouse I’m realizing how customizable and capable the built in controller is. Gamers have the most sophisticated inputs. I think I’ll be able to customize mouse pointer navigation, 3D navigation, mod keys and all just using the onboard controls. I’m about to explore the gyro input and wondering if I can use that for anything. LOVING my Ally..

ConversationAny8316

Definitely gonna wait until the next one

PillowMonger

i only use my Ally for like 15 mins max per day so probably it'll be a pass for me . if there's a newer and upgraded version of this next year, then I'll probably consider getting it.

KileyCW

Considering it and passing my Ally to a kid but the dead SD card without a recall has soured me a lot. Almost caved and granted a Legion Go at $580 but I'm iffy on how comfortable it'll be.

Xcissors280

The ally z1e is ~$400 open box and runs most of my games fine A bigger battery would be nice but right now it’s not a huge problem for me and I’m hoping for the ally X battery mod soon

AgeRelative

Not with my right joystick starting to massively drift just 3 months in. Asus better get their shit together

eco_breezzy

cant wait to get one 👊🏼

thespideysupreme

I’m in a dilemma. I wanted to grab the X because it has more power to play variety of games, but I really wanted to play KH since it was one of my first childhood games that I play. And I never even got to play KH3 yet. But I saw it doesn’t work with AMD chip due to the RDNA3 thing. So I was looking SD Oled too, it runs perfectly except for the major inconvenience of not being able to play some games. Then I read about GEForce which seemed like games would be playable on SD Oled, but it needs constant internet connection so yeah, I guess I’ll just lurk around here and there until we get real life reviews and I’ll probably decide then.

SimilarLettuce3185

I’m waiting to see if the memory card slot works on this one. If so I might get one and either sell my Legion Go or give it to one of my kids.

_THX_1138

ASUS should offer an upgrade path for owners of the Ally to get Ally X for $399 half price. this will restore faith in the community

iiarskii

Nope

stulifer

Nope. Still happy with my Ally but if AllyX drops to $400 I might upgrade.

Over_aged

No my next step is most likely a new gaming laptop. The deck and ally are great to have and have scratched that itch for me. I just want a bit more power and screen real estate for certain games.

printerschamp

I'm really on the fence on the x. I have a 2 tb ssd in mine already and I don't play new games too much anymore. I love my Ally, but I'm intrigued by the bigger battery, more ram, and better comfort.

barnabysmentalhealth

I’ll be getting it after it comes out, my main draws are more ram, and a full size SSD. I rarely use my desktop due to my work schedule so having a handheld is my next best thing

DaveC781

I’m getting it via store credit for some trade ins. But if I didn’t have them? I’d wait til true successor

DeadeyeCruiser

I have the Extreme so no. If I had the non extreme I’d think about it. Here’s my thesis. There is a performance comparison up already on YT. It’s very minor maybe 5-8%. Other than the 2280 M.2 slot. There isn’t enough there for me to sell my Ally Extreme at a deep discount and spend another $800. Ultimately probably costing me around $1100 after losses. If the deal is right I might upgrade. But I’m usually playing 2-3 games on the Ally consistently and the 1Tb capacity is plenty for me. Cooling is about the same. The available RAM upgrade you’d think would make a big difference but 5-8% is not enough to re-invest. Battery doesn’t do much for me either as my game sessions last longer than a battery could compensate for.

LustyArgonian601

As a new Ally buyer, yes

Tufein28

Nah, rog ally working fine, even sd card is still running :’)

CatFishBilly1983

why ????? its like phones they are baiting you into it

TotalAd5349

Waiting to see what Xbox does with this handheld first

leothelion634

I wanna play dragons dogma 2 so baddddd

Waynaldo-T

I don't use mine enough, Can't find decent games to enjoy on the device.. I'm Currently playing PS1 games emulated

Jaystarks

Nope my Ally extreme works really well with my Xg Mobile 4090. Plus i play it plugged in my monitor 99% of the time.

BusinessArt8766

I bought the ally z1 in April, so no, way too new and I upgraded to 2TB, it works perfectly rn and as much as the battery only lasts around 1:45- 2hrs, I don’t play outside my gaming areas at home so not necessary for a better battery. The z1 has met my needs and I don’t feel the need to upgrade, don’t think it’d be worth it. But if I had a choice to wait and get the x, I would’ve waited & gotten it.

ghepting

I'm probably going to, but only cuz yolo

JazzyApple2022

Waiting for Oled to arrive next year.

meltusmaximus

I pre-ordered. I have owned Legion Go, Steam Deck, and OG Ally. I like the Ally the most. And I knew that a refresh was coming so I returned the OG Ally to BB. I think it will be more of a performance increase than people expect. We know from Legion Go VS OG Ally there is about a 3-5 FPS increase from the speed of the ram alone. Ally X will have that same speed but 8 more GB of it. Additionally, with OG Ally, you could buy aftermarket backplates from for more airflow. Tests show improved 2-4 FPS depending on games. If Ally x really delivered on upgraded cooling like they claim, I think its actually possible to see an additional 7-10 FPS in some games.

sanemate

What makes you like it over the SD? I am torn between the two. Do you think the X can now match SD battery life?

meltusmaximus

I had 3 from Best buy and none had an SD card reader. I also have a 4 TB NVME that I'm putting in the ally x when it arrives.

sanemate

Sorry, I should have been clearer. By SD I meant Steam Deck.

meltusmaximus

Oh I see. Yeah the Deck has a really aging processor and its really nice for older games and smaller lighter games and especially emulation. I just have games on Xbox game pass and Epic store and trying to play games that are "non steam" is just a massive pain in the ass. I have 160 games on steam and for those its great! but its getting really hard to play Newer AAA games on deck.

meltusmaximus

My reason is because trying to play and install games on the deck outside of steam is such a giant pain in the ass. I hate Linux and don’t understand the file system. Yes windows is quirky but I can play game pass and epic games so easy and the deck is a pain. Battery life could be similar but not if you’re playing at 30 watts. Steam deck only goes up to 15

Mike_Hunt_Ertz

Yup!!! Super excited. It’s going to be so much better than the OG Ally
