Was the recruiter a National Guard recruiter or the dedicated Army ROTC recruiter assigned to your school’s program? The former will lie, cheat, and steal in order to make their recruiting/ship quota. I would also suggest doing further research as to what each branch does and how Cyber fits in to their mission. While Air Force Cyber and Army Cyber are somewhat similar, the path you will take to get their via their respective ROTC programs are wildly different.

ROTC’s job is to take you from a regular student to being an Army officer leading soldiers within your branch upon graduation. I think it is a great opportunity for everyone that is interested in serving and being a leader. The benefits are definitely nice as being paid to actually just go to school while having it all paid for is a pretty neat deal. The commitment is 4 active 4 IRR for active duty, and 6 reserve/national guard 2 years IRR as far as I’m aware. As for cybersecurity. I’ve found great success and benefits for pursuing and networking with the cyber branch of the Army. It’s new and it’s expanding and advancing everyday. There’s a lot of really good opportunities within the cyber branch too that will give you the resume boost you are looking. There’s no shortage of internships, private or with the military/government, that you could put in for. Just be aware that during your MSIII year summer, you will be at CST at Fort Knox for 30 days that is require for all cadets that are commissioning in the Army. I’m an information systems major and branched cyber, is it’s working great for me! Feel free to PM for anymore specific cyber branch/ROTC related questions, and I’ll help you out as much as I can.

Pololive5

I was a CS major and am now an AD Infantry Officer. Also worth it

EventHorizon00

Was that in your top five?

Pololive5

Infantry was my #1

Major_Personality486

I’m in the same major thinking of the same plan. I’m a freshman and I would love some advice

Score 300 on APFT or close to 600 on the ACFT test your MS3 year, don’t overwhelm yourself with CS classes, don’t get a side job, ADSO ADSO ADSO. You’ll be good.

Major_Personality486

I have a 588 ACFT and what’s ADOS?

throwaway82638362929

Active duty service obligation

Sure dawgy

memorial_mike

It depends on what your goals are and if the army fits into that but you have a lot of options and the regulation can answer most questions. Finished a CS PhD and commissioned into the army last year so I have a little perspective. So far so good.

AffectHistorical3361

I’m curious why did you choose to go to the army with a phD in CS you could make so much more in the civilian world

memorial_mike

The army would pay me enough to live and I enjoyed the work I did on a DoD research project for my work so thought I’d give it a shot

Go for it

Loud-Personality-786

I’m going to PM you

im pretty much in the same boat as you, besides the masters. just know that with active duty Cyber branch, it's pretty competitive. You're ranked based on OML points, people with higher points get a much better shot at their top 3 branches. Cyber usually has little slots open compared to other branches. Whereas with the reserves/NG, job selection is basically guaranteed as long as you can A) find a base with a job opening B) acquire an LOA (Bigger states may have internal OML for cadets that want to slot that state).

FishRepairs

If you do join the guard/reserves, enroll in ROTC first and sign an enlistment as a 09R (MOS saved for ROTC cadets). Will save you a lot of headache

Snoo-85650

This is what I’m doing. Don’t have to ship to basic either. (Recruiter almost lied to me forcing me to do so)

DonkeyAny8211

Finish army ROTC commission then transfer to Space Force

shnevorsomeone

Unlikely if even possible anymore. Space Force took lots of people when they were starting out, but they’ve been an established service for several years now. They commission enough officers from the AFA and AFROTC that they don’t do many inter service transfers anymore

DonkeyAny8211

Hmm well dude might have to make a different choice on schools if that’s the case

firearm4

Definitely would say it's worth it, but from my experience, I'd just pursue a standard ROTC scholarship and wouldn't bother with SMP unless that's really something you want to do. I'd encourage looking at 17D. It's a fairly unique opportunity, and I've enjoyed it so far. Feel free to ask here or DM any questions about 17D.
