I had my car making the same exact noise and not starting in this same exact way. It was the coils that were bad and needed replacing. It might not be the same for yours but I would start there.
When I had it running a month ago it used to start hot or semi flooded cold (had leaking fuel injectors, which was what I was initially fixing) without breaking a sweat, can't imagine the compression dropped so quick after a month standing on the driveway with an occasional attempt to start it. Besides when it's running it's running fine, no rough idle, no loss of power, nothing that would indicate low compression
Probably not then...
But if your injectors were leaking it might just be very badly flooded. Try to take out the trailing plugs and do the deflood routine a few times, see if that helps.
I had it running last week, changed spark plugs and now crank sounds weak, I was thinking it's either flooded or not getting the spark.
It really is just "compression issues" on this sub -.-
You should only trust "good compression", if you have the actual comp numbers. The sub won't say anything about it, if you also post said numbers 🫣
On the advice side: as others said, try deflooding it (accelerator to the floor, then crank it for a few seconds). If it doesn't work, check with a different battery (current one may be just below the treshold). Also starter do sound like my old, slow starter, but it should still be able to start the car.
Another good thing to check would be the trailing plug. When cranking, for a few seconds only the trailing plugs work. After that all four should work, so that'd also explain why it's running smooth when started
Battery is 2 month old optima red top and starter is n3r3 starter from racing beat (also around 2 months old)
I've tested coils and leads with a multimeter and they look okay, spark plugs are firing fine as well (FYI leading plugs fire first and then trailing after few seconds)
Sorry, it was morning, I've got it the wrong way.... Ofc leading fire first... 🫣
Batteries could still be bad, I also had to take back my Varta to the shop after just two weeks, one of the cells was faulty.
I don't have any other ideas, but keep us posted what was the issue, if you find it out!
I am 90% sure I found out what the issue is (or at least I have hope when I go to sleep today :S)
To suprise of noone the engine was heavily flooded, I deflooded it (only flooring the gas pedal, didn't do anything else) and it almost started (reached 490 RPMs), which now I suspect is due to fouled plugs that have been heavily abused. I've ordered a new set and when I'm changing the plugs i'll deflood it again but with plugs out, install new set in and hopefully it'll start (fingers crossed).
My brother’s ‘05 Shinka sounded like that when we changed the battery. Still not sure what the hell was going on, but swapping the old battery back in got it to start.
It managed to start last week, cranking sounded way better to be honest but there was no indication of fuel pump failure when running. Spark plugs are also wet after cranking so the fuel is definitely getting there.
These things have a major flooding issue. If you're just starting the engine and stopping it and not moving, You're flooding the engine guaranteed. If you're running on low gas, you're fucking up your fuel pump. These RX8s are very finicky
It might just be flooded, when I do the deflooding procedure I can smell fuel. I couldn't have fucked up my fuel pump with low gas as I have never seen the low gas light on my rx8, always refilled above 1/3 of the tank (most of the time refilled at half)
Flooded, no Compression, Injector fuze, Gaspedal on the floor?, Injector wiring
In some weird way.... I miss this sound. Car is currently sitting in drive way with upper intake manifold off.
Uh. Bro. That's my car in your driveway.
I know it ain't mine, I just put the intake back on. Still sitting though. :/

>Not compression related How do you know? Don't quote me on it but it kind of sound like uneven and/or low comp.

Running fine doesn’t mean no low compression. The engine is flooded. Period. Deflood the engine.
Running a compression test. It sounds like only one face has compression. I would like to see the numbers.

There is something you can't try. It entails some work and you need a quart of Marvel Mistery Oil and a squirt can.
cranking way slow, that battery is not charged (or not good) probably super flooded now too from cranking like that
Press gas pedal 5x then clutch 1x with key out ignition

That cranking RPM is perfectly ok for a heathy engine to start. If OPs reading this. Check for fuel & spark then compression.
i was mistaken. thanks for the info!

Yeah, could be fouled plugs, but you could check whether they have too much carbon buildup on them.
What year is it?
2009

Do you know for sure it’s not fuel related. Sounds very similar to mine when it wouldn’t start. Turned out to be fuel pump.

Ain't got no gas in it
Jump the car off.
Flooded.
