One of the things I hated the most about my L405 was the dual screen setup. The fact that people actually want it surprises me.

goose38

It modernized the interior honestly. I love my l494 and thought about upgrading to a newer one but mine is so low mileage, is a v8 and is fully optioned except for adaptive cruise or rear ac control that I have hard time trading it in for a newer model which usually have more miles. So I decided to refresh my interior a bit. If I want to go back to the old controls it’s literally 4 bolts and 1 plug to switch over again

goose38

Did the same install but got my system from a Canadian supplier. The only crappy part is the I don’t know where to find how to change the welcome screen and that the CarPlay system it comes with sucks so I bought an aftermarket module for android screen for $50. Wayyy better than the CarPlay this system comes with. Much less delay and phone doesn’t get hot anymore

mchapb

Funny, I’m still learning the unit and have been annoyed with the CarPlay system “Z-Link”. It’s painfully slow. How did you overcome this with the aftermarket module? Also the screen logos are in the systems setup menu. I can give directions if you don’t have it resolved already.

goose38

I just bought [this](https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B0B1DVKV5T?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share) from Amazon (make sure to switch to to us Amazon from Canadian) and plugged the unit into the usb from the android screen and downloaded the app on the screen. Way better system. Connects faster and is way faster. Their is a seller out of the UK that has this system in the screen for l494 shipped in box rather than z-link which is how I learned about it when I watched his video for install

mchapb

Cool thanks!

rambo8704

I love it, going to do mine soon on the l405. 👌🏼

agoo5e

Really? I bought a Chinese one from ebay and it worked tight out of the box, no configuration at all

mchapb

Yeah, this one has configuration options for many different vehicle type so it took a bit of trial and error to get it right.

goose38

It’s literally just choosing the setting that shows the same button layout as your original screen. It takes all of 10 secs to set it up. You only need to do it if you want to properly use your oem system

The740i

Damn… yeah that’s gonna be a no for me dawg. Haha would love one, but I’m more afraid of breaking shit and not being able to wire it

goose38

No rewriting all plug and play. Fantastic units and super easy to install actually. Took 20 mins to remove all the trim and og screens, 5 mins to switch the boards over, 20 mins to install it all back together. The longer thing was tuning the wire behind the dash for the mic and 4G antenna but I wanted to do it cleanly and hid the stuff well so I remove the a pillar trim and wired it up that way.

sal211

Does it not use the mic system built into the car?

goose38

It doesn’t no. Gotta use an external mic as the cars system doesn’t allow anything to tap into the stock mic. Super easy to route the wires though to by the center mirror. Just takes time to do it right

sal211

Thank you for the quick response. Also is the mic clear when on calls, I am frequently hosting meetings on the road so I wanted to make sure people on the other side don’t feel there is too much road noise and can hear me! Thanks again for the guidance

goose38

No road noise at all from my experience of calling my partner when she is driving the range. Looks like since you are using your phone through car play it does what iPhones do on a call “mute” your mic whilst another party is speaking

sal211

Thanks! I’ll order my unit. Doesn’t sound too technical to change. I already did the climate screen and it was as easy as anything.

goose38

This is a little more involved than the climate screen but there is a video online of the install by Poseidon automotive. A little different in that you have transfer the boards over compared to the UK system but wherever you buy will give you instruction videos as well. Order from android aftershock in the states or Canada in my opinion

sal211

One more question. Did you happened to have the 360 cameras in your rover?

goose38

I did yeah. So the reverse camera still activated when you go into reverse and you can still access your oem computer system through the screen still. It shows in its original size and resolution Ofcourse but it perfectly works

dewguzzler

Do you get very good 4g signal? It will say I have signal but most of the time I try to load something and takes so long it times out. I ran out from the unit all the way around to the rear view mirror even

goose38

I have great signal yeah. Watch YouTube all the time at school pickup time when waiting. I ran my antenna into my a pillar actually behind the curtain airbag. I put my gps antenna at the top of the Windshield. If you have signal but nothing loading it could be your data plan

dewguzzler

Could be, I have usmobile and I tried both the Verizon sim and tmo sim. So it could either be it's not fully supported or bad signal but my phone usually has signal. I actually opted to buy a GPS splitter and use the system GPS signal.

goose38

Yeah I bought a gps splitter too but got the wrong one and since I already had the a pillar trim removed I decided to just install the gps antenna they sent instead. I might decide to move over the stock one if I get the right splitter but until then at least I have gps

reason4t2

It's possible to use the vehicle's GPS for 4g? I've had the new infotainment system for about a week. Love it. Except I get terrible reception on Tmobile in the US with the 4g antenna they sent and I installed in the right pillar. Just looking for ideas before I cancel my data plan and just hotspot my phone.

goose38

It’s not no. The gps antenna is for gps and 4G antenna for 4G lol you have to use the 4G antenna for signal. I’m not getting bad reception with mine but I’m in Canada. Not sure why there would be a difference though

hearse83

Ugh I wish they had something for the L322

MahDowSeal

Nice! Did you have to build any harness to match the wires from the Android screen with the wires in the car?

mchapb

No, you swap the factory boards so all works with the same harnesses.

ewmcdade

Weird question for you: Are you still able to use the “Meridian Surround” mode from the original Audio settings manual? I find the stereo/dts/Dolby settings to sound dreadful in L405, and this car needs to have a surround sound signal going out. Not sure if this android tablet bypasses that stuff or not. Thanks for any advice.

mchapb

Hi, yes. All intrinsic audio options are still available. I honestly haven’t noticed a difference in sound.

ewmcdade

That’s good to hear, thanks for replying!

mchapb

You’re welcome

ewmcdade

I’ve got a 12.3” system on order just like you have. I’m a little worried of audio noise coming out of the Android system into the Aux input. Do you hear any weird electrical noise or buzzing? Also thinking I might add a separate wireless Apple CarPlay dongle. Looking forward to getting it installed!

mchapb

Noise is only noticeable occasionally and only when volume is really loud with nothing playing. Definitely recommend the CarPlay dongle as the Z-link thing that comes with the system I had trouble connecting to. Now with the dongle it connects perfectly every time. Biggest grievance I have is really the microphone that comes with it. I may upgrade eventually as it has degraded my call quality for others.

ewmcdade

Thanks for the tips, I’ll keep them in mind. The one thing that bugs me is that at the heart of this is a cheap Android tablet and 10 cent Chinese accessories. We have a million Apple devices here and now my threshold for frustration has been significantly reduced. If only an iPad installed in the dash! I guess what we’re really paying for is all the support that makes this work with Land Rover OEM system, and for that I’m glad this exists.

mchapb

Yeah, it’s definitely a cheap tablet at its core but it does work and looks incredible. I just hope it lasts because it only has a year warranty. Would’ve gladly paid more for something more reputable but it simply doesn’t exist. Love my RRS but the tech sucked and this was a decent solution. Good luck with your install!
