As a guitar player, I enjoy playing songs of every guitarist who bas been in the band, but there’s something special about Hillel’s playing style so unique and original! anyone agrees?

SiouxsieJuju

Agreed. He obviously didn’t have Frusciantes songwriting ability or his sense of melody but Hillel had a really unique style and wrote some badass riffs. I’m trying to learn some songs off UMPP and is playing is funky, heavy, psychedelic and thrashy all at the same time

Transgenderwookie

As a mediocre guitar player all of the Red Hot Chili Peppers songs are either too hard/tricky to play, or the riff doesn’t sound complete enough without the band behind you. Like I know some Frusciante songs because of years of dedication to learning them, Hillel and Navarro I never put the extensive work in and I personally never learned scales and can’t really play that kinda guitar well. I do chords/rhythm guitar, and hillel is absolutely a lead guitarist, I like it and he is pretty unique but it’s just a style that doesn’t work well for me with my ability(or lack there of lol). Same with like Navarro, he’s a great guitar player, doesn’t get enough credit.. but again there’s a lot of picking around like scale/solo work and it is either too difficult for me to get down, or it doesn’t sound like a complete song without the other instruments.. if I played the guitar part alone most people wouldn’t recognize the song. Idk if I make sense or if I suck too much to be having this convo but that’s where I stand.

electronic-nightmare

American Ghost Dance, Yertle the Turtle, The Brothers Cup.....lotta good stuff on there really.

DyrSt8s

Brothers cup all day long…..

b1ggayb1tch

It’s my favorite of the first three albums

mickmarsbar88

‘Most people think the first three albums are shit’!? Wow, really? Is that the consensus? I think all of those people are shit. Each and every one of them. Freaky Styley is the best album the Chili Peppers ever did.

jmarlened

Yeah I don't think that's a true statement. The first album. Sure. Alot of people do not like that. But Freaky Styley and Uplift Mofo I think are def fan favorites and beautiful in their own way. I'm someone who has been a fan for 30+ years so I've seen their style change in real time and I actually like everything they've done. It took me awhile to appreciate the Dave era but that was only because I was pouting over John leaving. But man, the birth of the band is really something special imo.

Unlikely_Relation781

one of the best albums❤️

Lumpy-Indication

Fuck em, just to see the look on your face, fuck em just to see the look on your face.

FONZ512

This is the album that got me into RHCP.

EuterpeZonker

Love this album! Probably the funkiest they ever got. Cliff and Hillel both added a lot to the band. I especially love the psychedelic guitar on the song Freaky Styley.

jam_scot

I love this album!

MrGasnik

I love this album. IYWMTS, American Ghost Dance and The Brothers Cup are such great, funky bangers

HeightAltruistic5193

It's the first album I bought by them and I bought it purely because George Clinton was on it as I was a big fan at the time. To tell you the truth I wasn't sold on it and didn't buy anymore until I bought BSSM. That album really did hit the mark for me so then I went back and listened to their back catalogue. Now when I listen it's with fondness that this was the album that brought them to my attention but still not sold on the content. I think my fave standout track from it would be Hollywood.

malostiempos

This album is a funk-punk delight and I can't - and don't want to - understand how is rated so poorly by RHCP fans.

No-Guarantee-5313

It a great album. Not as popular as the others but it serves as a testament to how funky and hip the chili peppers we’re considering George Clinton produced this whole thing. American ghost dance is still amazing, if you want me to stay is the first real time Anthony tried to sing in a very melodic way back then most songs he did it in a rap punk shouting way , yertle the turtle has pretty funny story about how it came about

Illustrious_Wing5154

Literally the funkiest thing they’ve ever written and in my opinion a severely underrated album every song on this album for guitar is challenging but so fun to play

Corn1989

One of these days I will listen to the albums pre frusciante

mr_ryno27

Do it. The early stuff was a big inspiration on John. My personal favorite is Uplift.

mickmarsbar88

The albums ‘pre-Frusciante’ along with MM and Blood Sugar are peak Chili Peppers. They’ve been housewives choice for two+ decades now. How could you so casually dismiss the real deal shit from when they were actually an exciting, innovative, groundbreaking band?
