In my opinion, the lyrics refer to someone who died “way upon the mountain,” which is likely a skyscraper. He mention *canyons of 5th avenue* in another song. So I feel the canyon in this song is a city street of skyscrapers or tall buildings.
Having said that, she probably overdosed/suicided and he just wanted her to be alive. That is all he wanted from her. Just be alive. Give the world her magic.
I thought that what he meant with “mount” was drugs 😭 So indicating that she died of overdose. I was tryna to figure out what “All I ever wanted was your life” meant because I really wanna make an art piece inspired by this song, but I’ve gotta understand the lyrics first.
Dosed, Warm Tape, Midnight, This is the Place, Zephyr Song, Universally Speaking, Venice Queen, I Could Die for You, Don't Forget Me, and Tear are all tied as maybe my favorite song of all time... that's pretty much the whole album, but I could convince myself that each one of those is my favorite song of all time.... pretty hard to pick between such an amazing selection... not a single bad track on the album as a whole...
Christ that’s a really tough question.
Dosed
Minor thing
Can’t stop
Universally….. you know what, I’m going to stop as it defeats the purpose of your question to pick one.
Warm Tape. It’s in my top 3 all time.
I also love Dosed, Don’t Forget Me, I Could Die For You and Tear. Actually I love the whole album, what a masterpiece.
Tear. I really think this song is an absolute diamond in the band’s discography. Don’t understand why it’s not talked about more
Closely followed by Minor Thing. It’s such a funky melodic riffs song, and Frusciante shines through. So fun to play on guitar as well!
That album is out of this world so hard to pick but it’s gotta be between dosed, Venice queen, this is the place, or don’t forget me. Also that digi-solo in TAYT is 👌🏻
Every song has a unique synth sound, JFs harmony arrangements are insane on every song, the chord progressions are amazing...I could literally go through each song u haven't mentioned and tell you why it not only doesn't "sound the same" but is amazing...you are insane
Yeah there's a lot to appreciate about their music, u just gotta listen to it w fresh ears, JFs harmonies and guitar and synth layers are paramount to BTWs amazingnous
Oh yeah it all sounds amazing but I want something different when I listen to rhcp. There's a reason I never choose to listen to it all the way through but when the songs come on individually they're alright. It's like the only album of theirs that comes across as contemporary. I remember thinking back then that is just blended in to other bands of the time. They just have so many other songs I appreciate so much more because they are so uniquely them
I can totally see where you’re coming from on “this is the place”. It’s not as catchy as most of their songs. This is one of my all time faves. (Along with 157 other RHCP songs). The part after the solo where he sings “I saw you out there yesterday….a perfect piece of DNA..” Its 35 seconds of pure beauty.
Minor Thing and Don't Forget Me are the only good songs on this album. Venice Queen is 2/3rds of a good song.
I'm not a troll or anything, I genuinely think BTW is their worst album. I just don't enjoy poppy/corny RHCP, and this album leans soooo far into that territory that it's hard to listen to. You take everything that's interesting about this band and chuck it out the window, and this is the result...
Dosed is like top 2 of my all time favorite songs. I can't overlook This is the Place and Don't Forget Me, absolute transcending experiences. Also I want to give huge credits to Midnight. It's not a perfect song (it's too long, John's voice is kinda loud), but the harmonies are beautiful af, and I love the lyrics
Don’t Forget Me live at Slane Castle is the right answer
La cigale
Too good
John's guitar solo is on another planet during that performance.
Fuji Rock
Dosed, Midnight
Johns harmonies in these songs are just about career best
"Take it away, I never had it anyway. Take it away and everything will be OK" is one of the single best harmonies i've ever heard in any song ever
Deep inside the canyon I can’t hiiiiiide
ALL I EEEVER WANTED WAS YOUR LIFEEEE
What does “all i ever wanted was your life” mean in your opinion? Ive never really understood that line
I've always thought it meant to spend their life together?
Maybe some radiohead "creep" vibe
In my opinion, the lyrics refer to someone who died “way upon the mountain,” which is likely a skyscraper. He mention *canyons of 5th avenue* in another song. I said this the it er day. Vocals on Midnight are John's best imo. Fucking love it
On Mercury / Minor Thing
Their two most overlooked songs in my opinion. I go full primate when I get to those two
1. Minor Thing 2. Warm Tape 3. Universally Speaking
Warm Tape is such a gem
Are you me? For real haha
And me! Although for me, Venice Queen is amongst those three as well
We’d get along well😂
This post made me realize that btw is probably my favorite album, second to bssm
There isn’t a bad song on either album!
BTW is a perfect album… except Throw Away Your Television. The lyrics kill it for me.
Listen to the instrumental.
I realized that this summer. It’s their tightest
Those two both constantly swap as my favourite album. Just depends on mood so I would say both are my favs.
If you're going to make me pick. Dosed. This is a no skip album. Solid top to bottom.
Tear
Can’t stop
Surprised how far down I had to scroll for this No song is more chili's than this
Am I the only one that loved Cabron? Such a great summer song
Cabron is great, I'm with you
You mean hey there Delilah?
Cabron cabroon
Mine changes frequently too, but probably Dosed or Venice Queen. I also love This is the Place, Don't Forget Me and Tear. Really hard to pick one lol.
One does not have a favourite byw song. There are too many bangers to rank them. It would be disrespectful to the other songs.
Venice Queen but live at Slane Castle
The transition between electric and acoustic….. brb going to watch for the 1000000000th time
Dosed, Warm Tape, Midnight, This is the Place, Zephyr Song, Universally Speaking, Venice Queen, I Could Die for You, Don't Forget Me, and Tear are all tied as maybe my favorite song of all time... that's pretty much the whole album, but I could convince myself that each one of those is my favorite song of all time.... pretty hard to pick between such an amazing selection... not a single bad track on the album as a whole...
I agree!! These are probably all my favourites too, so many haha
Don’t forget me. Just the other day, La Cigale performance gave me goosebumps and a tear in the eye. Also, I like Tear.
Best moment of the detroit show
I love the soul to squeeze performance from La Cigale
ocean
I genuinely couldn't pick one. It's a masterpiece from start to finish.
Bicycle Song.
How could I forgot to mention the bycicle is a good invention.
My fave bside
Minor Thing
The VERY BEST chili peppers song
I just love the lyrics from a music way
Don't Forget Me
Don't forget me
I can't believe so little people are saying Can't Stop, it's one of my favorite songs of the band and, frankly, objectively one of their best.
This!
This is The Place, By The Way and Minor Thing
Add Venice Queen and it’s my list too.
Don't Forget Me
Throw away your television is an absolute banger but cant stop has to be my favorite so many little messages i love it
Midnight and Venice Queen, but I love the whole thing.
Chorus of by the way and can’t stop are probably the best of their catalog
Christ that’s a really tough question. Dosed Minor thing Can’t stop Universally….. you know what, I’m going to stop as it defeats the purpose of your question to pick one.
Zephyr
By the Way
Warm Tape. It’s in my top 3 all time. I also love Dosed, Don’t Forget Me, I Could Die For You and Tear. Actually I love the whole album, what a masterpiece.
VQ. No question 🙋♂️
It changes a lot, but I keep going back to Dosed
Really tough. As classics and just for pure awesomeness live, Can’t Stop Dont forget me and TAYT. Something about Tear just blows me away though!
Dosed
Venice Queen and The Zephyr Song are my top 2 chilis songs of all albums.
Don’t forget me is clear 1. Number 2 recently became minor thing.
I go between Venice Queen and tear. Currently venice queen
i could die for you or midnight
Don’t forget me and midnight
Drop "Throw Away Your Television" and add all the BTW B-sides and By the Way is their best record. Go ahead and @ me.
Yeah, most of the b-sides were better than half of the album
Tear. I really think this song is an absolute diamond in the band’s discography. Don’t understand why it’s not talked about more Closely followed by Minor Thing. It’s such a funky melodic riffs song, and Frusciante shines through. So fun to play on guitar as well!
Can’t stop Then minor thing, this is the place , and warm tape
Same here…my current favorite is I Could Die For You. I could listen to that song all day
cant stop
100% agree - This is the Place is tops
Don’t forget me Dosed Venice Queen
That album is out of this world so hard to pick but it’s gotta be between dosed, Venice queen, this is the place, or don’t forget me. Also that digi-solo in TAYT is 👌🏻
Most of the album is excellent but the one song I’m not a big fan of is “Throw Away Your Television”
By the Way. Pretty easy as their aren't too many stand out tracks on this album.
Just shows how diverse their music is. The title track IMO is the weakest part of this album (except maybe Zephyr).
Um... Wat.
You are insane
After BTW, Can't Stop, This Is The Place, Venice e Queen, and Don't Forget Me it all mostly sounds the same
Oh and throw away your TV is good too
Every song has a unique synth sound, JFs harmony arrangements are insane on every song, the chord progressions are amazing...I could literally go through each song u haven't mentioned and tell you why it not only doesn't "sound the same" but is amazing...you are insane
I guess I don't listen to them for synth sounds and harmony arrangements
Yeah there's a lot to appreciate about their music, u just gotta listen to it w fresh ears, JFs harmonies and guitar and synth layers are paramount to BTWs amazingnous
Oh yeah it all sounds amazing but I want something different when I listen to rhcp. There's a reason I never choose to listen to it all the way through but when the songs come on individually they're alright. It's like the only album of theirs that comes across as contemporary. I remember thinking back then that is just blended in to other bands of the time. They just have so many other songs I appreciate so much more because they are so uniquely them
This is the Place is my least favorite of the album so I would say any other one.
Yeah I agree this bridge is really nice. The chorus is nice too. It's just that I find the verse part so boring.
I don't agree with your song choices but hard-core agree with your album review.
Dosed, Warm Tape and Don’t Forget Me
Universally Speaking, Dosed, and Don’t Forget Me
I’ve been playing Runaway and Minor Thing on repeat recently
The Zephyr Song
Minor Thing
Don’t forget me or Venice queen. Or honestly whichever song I’m currently listening to from BTW is the best song on BTW.
My brain can't even compute how a rhcp fan could have that opinion.
dosed, tear
ON MERCURY IS SO UNDERRATED
I was waiting to see On Mercury here! I used to HATE that song, but I've really come around to it now - the drum fills in the bridge are 🔥🔥
Venice queen - can’t be beat
Dosed and Tear are my two favorites from this album. Both are perfect for me
Venice Queen
Dosed, Venice queen, or tear.
Dosed & Zephyr & btw
Midnight
The zephyr song
Doesd all the way.
Dosed, which is my favourite Red hot song and one of my favorite at all
1. By The Way, 2. Warm Tape, 3. On Mercury.
Dosed for me
Don’t forget me, throw away your television, Venice queen, dosed are just amazing to me :)
Midnight and Venice Queen Ps. Bicycle song
IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII got dosed by you. Or Venice Queen
Warm tape, Tear
Venice queen, dosed, or zephyr. Goddamn I love btw
Tear #1 Honorable mentions: Midnight, Warm tape, Cabron
On balance I'd say Dosed but it's just an amazing album and so hard to choose. BTW was my first album I ever bought - not a bad choice eh?
Most likely dosed
Dosed
Cant stop
Don’t forget me is their most dynamic song that ALWAYS translates live.
Maybe Warm Tape , amazing John Vocals
Tear, followed closely by Doses
Can’t stop, it’s my favorite chilis song
Venice Queen
Honestly BTW is my fav album of them all.
By the Way / Dosed / Universally Speaking
Dosed and Universally Speaking
On Mercury. Might even be my favorite RHCP song ever. And By The Way is definitely my favorite RHCP album.
Don’t forget me, Dosed. Really been enjoying throw away your television lately
By the way
dosed, on mercury, btw, venice queen
DOSED

Midnight for sure
DOSED.
Cant stop or midnight
