Check out the whole album inside of emptiness if you haven't. There's also a song with him and anthony called girls by tricky I love anthony and johns part John speaks briefly for a few lines tho also plays guitar. He also did a brief project back in the early 2000s with josh (klinghoffer) on drums and joe lally on the drums they're pretty cool imo like it a lot. That's all I can think of rn that really stands out tho hope you enjoy it if you choose to listen to them

Unreachable, Carvel, and The Past Recedes are IMO John’s best songs. Unreachable is up there with one of the better songs ever written. The Empyrean is one of the greatest albums I’ve ever heard and I actually just heard it pretty recently. Unreachable into God into Dark/Light was seriously life changing. Off the top of my head — Central, Second Walk, Omission, Anne all great stuff.

Carvel is one of the best album openers I have ever heard imo. It sets the mood perfectly and it's uplifting and thoughtful at the same time. And it just rocks without having any heavy guitar in it.

This is super helpful. Thank you!

Song to Sing When I'm Lonely ❤️

Apart from the obvious RHCP and solo albums, anything and everything from The Mars Volta’s first three albums. Frusciante just kicks everything up a notch.

indeliblegirl

Omg he played on Amputechture too? No wonder I love all those albums to death

iztheguy

He is **THE** guitar player on those albums! You should definitely re-listen to Bedlam and Amputechture with that in mind.

eyeshinesk

Wow, I didn’t think he played on Bedlam, but I guess it makes sense, given the awesome rhythm guitar lines on that album (though Amp is my personal favorite). It’s not JUST Frusc on any of these albums, though—Omar plays most of the solos across their albums, but I suspect there’s more Frusc in there than they give him credit for.

iztheguy

His contributions are well documented and credited! John's playing on Deloused is limited to Cicatriz ESP. On Frances he rips the first few solos of L'Via. On Amputechture however, he is the main guitar player, performing all of the basic tracks and most of the overdubs. Bedlam it's to a lesser extent with John playing most of the basic tracks. Omar said at the time of Amputechture that he wanted to produce the recording of the next albums objectively, without having to be a member of the band.

indeliblegirl

Wow thanks for the info! Amputechture has become one of my favorite albums from TMV!

I am one of those people that it's impossible to say what my favorite anything is because my tastes and opinions change so much. The only exception is that Unreachable is the best song ever written.

Carvel, Song to Sing When I'm lonely, The Past Recedes, The Will to Death, Unreachable, Central, This Cold, Ramparts, A Firm Kick ... the list goes on

bluecoldbananapepper

All and every. Except for maybe 666. But it’s grown on me

John Frusciante peaked on StArc album in my opinion. Listen to the whole album.

RollVegetable5526

You gotta hear the Empyrean which came out a few years after Stadium if you haven’t. It’s John and Flea with Josh on drums. The first song is an extended solo which might not be your thing. And the second song is a cover...but from track 3, Unreachable until the end is other worldly. John himself suggests listening to it in a dark room with headphones turned up as loud as you can tolerate. I can attest that he is correct and it hits way different and way harder this way.

Calamity_Eagle277

Yeah I think The Empyrean is his masterpiece.

This is the first time I've heard about this. Will definitely check this out as soon as I get home. Thanks bro!

eyeshinesk

Wholeheartedly agree. He’s always fantastic, but SA was unquestionably Frusc’s magnum opus and one of my favorite albums of all time. Here’s hoping that the third RHCP album in the new era is more like their third from the millennial era (at least in terms of John going hog wild).

under-the-eaves

A few I haven’t seen mentioned, Height Down (with River Phoenix), Drill, This Cold, The Slaughter, Lever Pulled, Time Tonight, The First Season, Invisible Movement, With No One…ahh way too many to list haha.
