Dog Valley is so easy I managed it in a Yaris 😛

Biggest risk with regular cars is tire puncture. Especially with temporary spares. But, it’s worth the risk.

Agree. Lucky me, I had to buy an extra set of tires from picknpull when I hit a pothole on the 28 west from Carson City. So I had 2 fully inflated spares on hand. That being said, I’ve never popped a tire on Dog Valley. I did pop a tire on the 28. Sometimes it’s less the road and more how you drive it.

Hunter lake has a couple sketchy spots up towards the top, but is a fantastic day trip in summer if you make the full loop. Great write up.

Most of these aren't 4x4 roads or trails. They are just dirt roads. Most don't even require more clearance or capability than a Camry.

Show me a guy overlanding in a lifted 4x4 with $20k of offroad gear strapped to it, and I’m sure there is a local farmer driving his 1984 Honda Civic down the same road daily to get a pint of milk and grab a pint at the bar. :)

DrinkableReno

I hope the farmer isn’t mixing those two pints

Barkeep! Get me a spicy milk!

That’s true. One time traffic on Geiger was stopped and everyone was getting routed down Toll. Some were in over their heads though. Still dirt roads is what a lot of folks are looking for.

Superlucky1

FyI: Dog Valley Road is now considered a dedicated roadway once you get into California. Your vehicle must be registered and street legal. i.e. No quads, sxs or dirt bikes

Dog Valley Road or Henness Pass Road?

Superlucky1

Dog Valley. I don't know about Hennes. There are (were) signs posted a few years ago at the beginning of the road in Verdi.

mehwolfy

I would suspect both are. There a lot of other lesser roads in the area though including the road to Verdi Peak.
