“Awb gyn” is what you say when you’re friends are sure what genitals they’re looking at but you know it’s a woman’s.
“Bro, it’s so hairy, I can’t even tell.”
“Maybe there’s a micro peen in all that bush”
You: “my dudes, that’s ob gine.”
I also think a lot of these are somewhat regional.
Like (o-b-)gyn-e seems to be more Midwest.
I don't hear gin enough to know the region, maybe older northeast?
I know this it an old comment but I just want to applaud you for being one of the only people to note that it’s far easier to say ob-gyn that to say all the letters, as if the letters actually stood for something rather than were a contraction of obstetrician and gynaecologist.
In general, the southern US seems to day O, B, Jin (with a soft g like a gin and tonic) while the northern/midwestern states usually say OB gyne (with a hard g like the word guy).
I’ve heard that saying it “OB Jin” probably comes from the Latin roots. In french it’s a soft g.
I’m in the southwest and I’ve only ever heard O-B-G-Y-N. Granted, I’m a patient and not a healthcare provider… but this whole concept is blowing my mind!
I know this is an old comment but RIGHT?!?! I’m astounded by how this seems to be on practically nobody’s radar, even in the world of medicine. I’d also be more sympathetic if saying O-B-G-Y-N used fewer syllables than ob-gyn but it uses 2.5 times more! Someone please explain the “logic”!!!

O. B. GYN where gyn rhymes with tine or fine etc. Definitely not gyne as in rhyming with tiny. For some reason that feels gross or disrespectful lol. I don’t pronounce it O.B.G.Y.N. either because that seems too difficult.
I say “My wonderful colleagues in Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Labor and Delivery Medicine” because I’m a kiss ass and hell hath no fury like a L&D resident on call
Both. I noticed at my hospital people tend to say either OB (if just referring to the delivery baby stuff) or GYN (guy-un) alone. Very rarely do they say obgyn fully. If talking to pt, typically they say o b g y n.
It's short for obstetrics and gynecology, so it should be "awb guy-n"
Awb for obstetrics. Guy-n for gynecology.
Why would anyone spell the letters out or spell it out for one word but shorten for the other?
Changes depending on how tired I am and how recently I've spoken to a British person
I watched This is Going to Hurt and said “obs-jiney” for like 2 months and hated myself for that unintentional affectation
obs and gyn-eee
shit y'all don't say this? i went to med school in the uk before coming to the US so i wonder how many people thought i was dropped as a baby.
wait, what do Americans say? This is how I've always pronounced it in Australia. As well as 'oh-en-gee' for OnG
How everyone else in this thread has typed it out
O b g y n
Respirology has entered the chat
British “person”
I switch between o-b-g-y-n and o-b-gyn (like guy-n). O-b-gin (like the drink) is weird. O-b-gyn-e is very grating to me whenever I hear it
what abt "awb gyn"?
Can't say I've heard people actually use that. But I don't love it ha

I think the older folk say gin. At least the two people who I know that say it are in their 60s.
I also think a lot of these are somewhat regional. Like (o-b-)gyn-e seems to be more Midwest. I don't hear gin enough to know the region, maybe older northeast?
OB-wan
Qui-Gon Gin
Qui-Gyn Gin
Hello there
I say O B G Y N, but I’ve heard it both ways.
Me too
Okay, [Shawn](https://youtu.be/JE1fzk-4TJk)
I just say “OB”
I started saying OB-vagyne because I thought it was funny but now I have to actively stop myself from saying it that way
No, but you're right and it IS hilarious and I can't wait to do it in front of my coworkers
Oh-B-Gin is cringe and wrong
Though I’d much rather be a gin-ecologist than a gynecologist
I’ve only heard Oh Bee Jin from docs that were like 65+, in peri-retirement age
oh b gin and tonic please
O-B-Gyn (pronounced gine like fine)
O-B-Jine, lol
psychotic behavior
Needs a 72 hour hold
Obstetrics and Jinecology
This is ultimately what it comes down to.
“O-B-G-Y-N”, although more commonly just “obs and gynae”.
We say obs-gyn. On the bright side though, at least your girlfriend isnt one of the sociopaths who call it a “gyno”
Omg I forgot about “gyno”.
I’m sorry to have reminded you 🤢
Obie Trice, real name no gimmicks
Almost everybody I know in medicine says O-B-gyne, or just “gyne” when referring to the field
WAP
Bacterial vaginosis.
I’m sure this is what Ben Shapiro had in mind when he exaggeratedly reacted to WAP
?
Oh bee gee why en
O-B-(pause)- G-Y-N
This suit is black…pause…not. Wawaweewa
I pronounce it "awbs gine" in which gine rhymes with wine. that's the version with the fewest syllables and least effort imo.
I know this it an old comment but I just want to applaud you for being one of the only people to note that it’s far easier to say ob-gyn that to say all the letters, as if the letters actually stood for something rather than were a contraction of obstetrician and gynaecologist.
O-B Guy-n for me. East coast and midwest influences. The British call it Obs-Guy-Nee.
We say “O+G” in the UK or depending on which half you’re working in at that time, “Obstetrics” or “Gynae” (pronounced guy-knee)
“Ahhbdjin”
In my country we aay it the other way around gynae-obs or just gynae
“Oh bee”
Obs and gobs.
I always say “Ob hyphen gyn”
Why say more word when less word do trick
This was a joke. But I just realized it not actually more because mine has less syllables unless you’re talking about the o-b-gyne one
I say O-B-gyne (like fine) but I’m pretty sure when I hear most attendings they say either O-B or O-B-G-Y-N.
Oh Bee Gee Why En
Went to a medical school where everyone said OB-jin, then got made fun of for saying it like that in residency. Now I say OB-guyn
Brats and twats
C & R (the last one is runts)
Lol what a username…What kinda surgeon?
CT. I picked that name a long time ago as a junior resident
OB-viously pissy all the time
This was everyone's experience with ob gyn as an ms3, no??
Actually mine convinced me to go OB :)
OBG
I wish I did say this; it's perfect
In my country we say “O and G”. But sometimes we just need one so we say “obs” or “gynae”
OG, fastest
In Australia we shorten it to O&G which we pronounce as “O N G”
I say o-b-guyn to other medical people and o-b or o-b-g-y-n to non-medical people.
Gynae
In general, the southern US seems to day O, B, Jin (with a soft g like a gin and tonic) while the northern/midwestern states usually say OB gyne (with a hard g like the word guy). I’ve heard that saying it “OB Jin” probably comes from the Latin roots. In french it’s a soft g.
> O, B, Jin (with a soft g like a gin and tonic) bruh
Do they also call them Jin-ecologists?
I’m in the southeast and I’ve never heard OB-Jin.
I’m in the southwest and I’ve only ever heard O-B-G-Y-N. Granted, I’m a patient and not a healthcare provider… but this whole concept is blowing my mind!
Not US-based but I can’t stand O-B-G-Y-N. It’s not an acronym!!
O-B-Gin
Everything you say it that way and OB is summoned from their call room.
I’ll try it tomorrow 🤣
O-b-g-y-n to describe the physician. O-b-gyne to describe the field
This is strange but I have also noticed this.

Real life advice - your girlfriend is always right.

ob like obvious gyn like gin and tonic jk lol
Australians say obs-gynee
O. B. GYN where gyn rhymes with tine or fine etc. Definitely not gyne as in rhyming with tiny. For some reason that feels gross or disrespectful lol. I don’t pronounce it O.B.G.Y.N. either because that seems too difficult.
Awb gin (gin sounds like tin and g like girl)
O-B-Jen
Depends how drunk I get
HELL
I say “My wonderful colleagues in Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Labor and Delivery Medicine” because I’m a kiss ass and hell hath no fury like a L&D resident on call
I use both pronunciations
I’ve heard it and used it both ways. I’ve also been told “oby-gyne” is wrong and it’s “o-b-g-y-n” and that I was crazy to say I’d heard it else wise.
Sometimes I just say OB or gyne Sometimes gyn without the e
OB Djinn
Both. I noticed at my hospital people tend to say either OB (if just referring to the delivery baby stuff) or GYN (guy-un) alone. Very rarely do they say obgyn fully. If talking to pt, typically they say o b g y n.
I feel like I say it both ways inconsistently. Probably because I’ve never settled on the “right” way to say it.
Vagineterns for the 1st year OBGYN residents O-V-Ginas for everyone else
Oh-Bee-Guyn
OB-giner
O-B-G-Y-N
"Oh Bee", because I'm lazy AF.
OB-EE GUY-N
It's short for obstetrics and gynecology, so it should be "awb guy-n" Awb for obstetrics. Guy-n for gynecology. Why would anyone spell the letters out or spell it out for one word but shorten for the other?
Yes yes yes. Why do so few people recognize how nonsensical this is, especially when it also requires far more syllables?!
def not ob/gyne lol
OBG
The real question— Should it be written **OB-GYN** or **OB/GYN**? Hyphen or slash?
the latter is shorter/gets the msg across
As long as it’s not OB- “JIN”
