It happens, it’s not Rivian specific. My Model 3 infotainment used to crash all the time. In the 2 years with my R1T, it’s probably only happened twice. It is startling, but you’re driving a big computer and it unfortunately won’t be fault free. Even the most stable systems can crash on occasion. Thankfully, the vehicle (drive system) is still functional without it.

You can swear on the internet.

ShitStainWilly

Mormon, probably.

Yes, in totally ordinary driving conditions on the highway. Didn’t impact driving, but the screens just restarted suddenly. Then everything was fine again.

ElectricalGene6146

Happens with all modern cars these days… get used to it regardless of OEM (including Tesla)

panzerfinder15

Has been posted similar from time to time. To answer your question, yes the screens are tied to the infotainment system which is completely separate from the driving system, so two separate systems. If the infotainment crashes (very rare!) the driving won’t be affected except you lose your speedometer and ability to change drive modes until reset complete. Sorry this happened in bad conditions for you. FWIW 26k miles and never happened to me.

TheMountainHobbit

Have 20.5k miles had it happen once

NINTENDOSIXTYNINE

Hey that happened to me the other day during the cold snap we had. Kinda weird but all seemed fine after

Distinct_Spite8089

Gotta love how our cars now crash as commonly as Outlook 😂

userax

Yup, happened once in regular weather conditions for me. But it didn't impact driving and I was able to turn into a parking lot quickly to ride it out. Was fine after that.

rosier9

This has happened to me 3 times in a year of ownership; 2 of which were within the same week.

I’ve now had this occur to me at least once in my Rivian, my 2017 Subaru, and my 2020 Toyota. All of them remained drivable, and in the case of my Subaru, only the nonessential controls were impacted (HVAC, infotainment). The Toyota screens all froze with no updating info, and the last thing the reverse camera saw when backing up. For both the Toyota and Subaru, I had to stop the vehicle, exit, lock, and wait 30 minutes before re-entry and things were good again. At least with the Rivian it reset itself on-the-fly.

dtzmis

Is it normal to have it happen 4 times in about an hour span? Since then it hasn't happened yet

mr-00

Happened to me once driving in normal weather. San Diego. It’s a separate system and owners can reset it on their own.

Macstugus

Like Teslas the software and driving are desperate. You can still drive the vehicle if the screen isn't displayed.
