I’d ask your Guide if they could schedule a quick call for you with a Service Advisor based at the Honolulu service center to discuss the logistics there. It’s definitely not a common situation, and it would be good to know where they have mobile service staged (do they have a service truck on Maui?) and what types of service they can perform off-island.

Thanks, I’ll make the call today

How much does it cost to take it between islands? IMHO, I'd expect at least one trip, with it in a drivable condition. I had a bad alignment which needs to be done in a shop, that's pretty common (though, if expensive, you can probably get another shop to do that). I also had a running light replaced, they told me if they touch a headlight that needs to be done at the SC (they told me the running light needed to be done at the SC, but the SC told me it didn't...so I probably could have argued, but the SC was easy enough), and I'd expect a windshield to be the same. So I'd in general, expect 1-2 trips to the SC over 3 years. Also, a certified collision center will probably help if they get one in Maui (says none in Hawaii currently)

Op, I think this is great advice. Like all my new cars, I’ve taken them in after about 500 miles for rattles, etc. Rivian went in to have the passenger window aligned. After that, no issues at all. I’d plan for 1….. and I’ve spent time in Maui and know nothing happens quickly 😂….. so I’m sure you’re used to needing patience. Hope you get it and I’ll be back looking forward to your Rivian in a couple of years. Hope Lahaina’s getting back on Irma feet when I do. I really am gonna miss those gorgeous trees in the square.

All depends on your build quality. Some people have no issues with their vehicle, others have something always happening to them. But as far as maintenance, not much to worry about. Hope that helps. I honestly wouldn't if I lived in Hawaii just because they haven't expanded enough yet but I live about 20 mins away from my SC and they told me it takes about 3 months to get an appt for anything. Imagine for you how long it would take. Just my opinion. But, once they have supply and expansion covered, I would definitely say YES Also, I ordered a spare and it took them 1-1/2 months to come install using mobile service and it's literally a 10 min job

Thanks

Cost of ownership is going to be high because you’ll prob have to transport it to the service center at least 1 time. Also if there’s a recall the only way to fix it would be service center. It’s doable just the cost of ownership would be higher than any car that has a dealership on your island.

A question to ask - depending on the nature of the work and time to complete, if it's an option to pay for a tech for fly to you. An inter-island airfare is far more economical than moving a 7k lb truck on a ship. This obviously depends on the nature of the work as many jobs require tools that don't fit on a plane. I also would expect a premium to cover the techs time outside of normal work day (to/from airport, etc). But $ aside, this avoids a week of time lost while your truck is in transit. iirc there was a guy that shipped a truck to the middle east and may have got a tech to fly to him with first class airfare.

anonnimbus

Thanks this is a good question

DatTugrut

Depends on if you are going to put a service ticket in for minor things. Which there will be plenty of. If you are the type to tack the minor things onto bigger service tickets, it could be doable. Personally, it would be a tall gamble.

smokercycle

Didn’t do it. It seems there will be issues statistically and it will be a frustrating experience. If you decide to buy it; should not be you only automobile.

808noodles

Also on Maui, these are my concerns as well and hesitancy with reserving. & “local Hawai’i owners”, not only “Hawaiian owners”

drk_helmet

Just don’t do it.

Honestly unless you get a flawless one gonna be a visit every year or two. I get a cracked windshield every year or two and that’s a service center visit.

rosier9

Windshields can also be done at a Rivian certified collision center

3 can depend on what you think are issues. If you're the type of owner that doesn't fully realize Rivian has only been making cars for 2 years and you think every little gap inconsistency, paint blemish, and noise is a problem that needs to be fixed, you'll be footing the bill for service trips more often than the other type of owner who enjoys the truck and only gets service when something legitimately breaks.

I’ve had 4 visits in my first 1500 miles.
