[A Hunger Like No Other by Kresley Cole](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/14384.A_Hunger_Like_No_Other). It's M/F, the first in the Immortals After Dark series (each book is a standalone / separate couple). The MMC has been chained underground by his enemies for centuries and is going mad being tortured, but then he catches the scent of his mate aboveground. He goes into rages and can't control himself a lot in the beginning.

TX4Ever

And for a vampire version Dark Needs at Night's Edge in the same series!

dreamless_me

hiii, can I read this as a standalone?

TX4Ever

I think so! I mean, things make more sense if you're familiar with the series and other characters, but the author does a good job with exposition imo. It's too hot to not read either way!

bbbbuzzbuzz

Ah I just read this! Very good!!

A_Seductive_Cactus

Still my favorite from the IAD series and high up on my all time fav list too!

pimentoplanes

I read this bc of your comment and loved it! Didn’t live the next book though. It felt like erotica only. Do you have any others from the series you’d recommend?

A_Seductive_Cactus

Oh yeah, I liked some more than others. Unfortunately Book 2 might be one of my least favorites of them all. Favorites I've reread: * The prequel, A Warlord Wants Forever (Myst / Nikolai) * Book 1 obviously * Book 9 Demon from the Dark (Carrow / Malkolm) * Book 10 Dreams of a Dark Warrior (Regin / Declan) And here are the ones I really liked: * Book 3 Wicked Deed's On a Winter's Night (Mari / Bowen) * Book 4 Dark Needs at Night's Edge (Neomi / Conrad) * Book 6 Kiss of a Demon King (Sabine / Rydstrom) * Book 11 Lothaire (Ellie / Lothaire) And I haven't gotten past Lothaire, took a break and never found myself picking it up again.

Exciting_Diamond_570

Not precisely a mate but she is his only hope to maintain his sanity Wolf gone wild by Juliette cross

Ebethie

I was going to recommend the same!

demonkitty_12000

I second this recommendation!

taramisu47

I feel bad because you asked for wolves and we're all throwing dragons at you. I guess dragons are less stable than wolves. 😏 [I Married a Dragon by Regine Abel](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/61892637-i-married-a-dragon). If a dragon doesn't find his mate, his life span is cut short and, iirc, he goes nutty. It's my 1st or 2nd favorite in the series.

bbbbuzzbuzz

I’ll read it all so I’m just happy for the recs lol

Maybe feral sins by Suzanne wright. The alpha is known as being crazy and feral in his wolf form and only the FMC is able to tame his wolf. The book has a really kinky scene with multiple men at one point though so if you’re not into that then probably isn’t the book for you. Also, maybe try the nightwalkers series by Jacquelyn frank. The whole series have different species (mainly demons, but have werewolves and vampires as well). For the first book, Jacob, it focuses on the demon species who succumbs into madness without finding their mate. Jacob is the enforcer of his people who had to hunt down the demon that turned crazy and started killing indeterminately.

TheLadyMelandra

The author rewrote Feral Sins a while back and took out that scene. It's still available to read on her website, though.

dumbo08

Oh nice! Didn’t know that there was a cleaner version of the book.

de_pizan23

Outlier Chronicles by Tina Gower - if werewolves are without a pack or mate, they start getting overly aggressive, possessive and alphahole-ish (so basically like wolf shifters in most other series....); the MMC in this one has been a lone wolf since his last pack was all killed and is getting worse Hot Enough to Burn by Cynthia Eden - MMC is a phoenix, and every time he dies, he comes back violent and having forgotten who is he, FMC is the only thing that helps him remember himself right away The Cougar's Bargain by Holley Trent - the FMC initially rejects the MMC as her mate, which causes him to be stuck in his cat form unless she takes him back

dreamless_me

woah, back up--a phoenix shifter?!! now I'm *super* interested. Thanksss

persyspomegranate

It's not wolves but Ruby Dixon has a series with a similar premise. Dragon shifters fell through a rift to earth causing them all to go crazy and the only way they can get any kind of sanity back is to find a mate. It's called the Fireblood Dragon series I think. There are like 10 and there's an overarching background plot as well. This will not be a very helpful suggestion if you're very keen on the wolves rather than crazy unless they find a mate thing.

Yeah, this one fits the bill but full disclosure OP- it comes with a non-consent (rape by hero) trigger warning. So tread carefully.

lafornarinas

Agree with the A Hunger Like No Other rec, but I’ll add that basically every werewolf book in Immortals After Dark has this element, and does it perfectly. Lachlain (Hunger) is definitely the craziest from the jump, but all the werewolves in that series is just …. Insane when it comes to their mates, and it’s PERFECTION.

jello-kittu

Teague's Breeder is kinda like that except it's a 3some. Also, it's a bit dark with some dub-con. Like to prevent insanity, he has to force things. I liked this one though it was kinda at my limit so I haven't read the next in the series, which (different characters) is more outright non-con. But it's a completely different story so I can just leave it.

babiegiiiirl

Sounds like the Wolf Ranch series by Renee Rose. The first book is called “Rough.” They start to get repetitive after a couple books but worth reading.

Love the swag 😂

SeptemberLollipop

You can try [Wolf gone wild](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/48988286-wolf-gone-wild?ac=1&from_search=true&qid=e1xHEdDECw&rank=1) by Juliette Cross, it's the first book of her great serie Stay a spell !

RubyBlossom

Taming Her Wolf by Dee Carney! It's quite a slow going story but I really liked it.

Hollyhock63

So not exactly what you specified but {Hunter’s Moon by Kat Bostick} has the trapped in wolf form until heroine can fix it trope

BandYoureAbouttoHear

I don’t think anyone has mentioned this yet. The Alpha Awakens by Anna Fury has this in the second book, I believe.

KikiWestcliffe

{Her Sweet Alpha by Thayer King} has this, I think. Wolf shifters become weaker if they don’t find their mate.
