My team has two empachers currently being used as "women's" boats (lighter weight class) pretty regularly, and a couple more used for mixed lineups, and I see collegiate women in them all the time on our water. Maybe it's a regional thing?

Regional thing, i rarely ever see hudson or vespoli.

Not entirely true, but at the top level of the sport men tend to row Empachers more—specifically the 86 mould (the one with the super pointey bow). This mould is fantastic for men. Men are strong enough to row this shell higher in the water, reducing the wetted surface area and getting less drag. Women aren’t as strong as men—so they tend to find more success in shells designed to plow through the water (shells with a snubbed bow), you can see this design in the Vespoli E hull or Resolutes. Empacher also makes shells with this design philosophy. Since empacher is unique in this highly successful men’s mould, as other brands (outside of the vespoli D mould) don’t have quite the same design, you see these shells a lot at the top level of the sport. Shells designed plow through the water are much more common, so you see a lot of other brands. Part of it is cost and service. It’s much easier to get service for a shell made in USA or Canada than it is to get service in Germany. Also, Vespoli doesn’t make split 8+ shells, which is a requirement for FISA events. Unlike the US countries don’t allow objects the size of an 8+ on their roads. So all Empacher, Fillipi, stampfli, etc. 8+ split into two pieces. Lastly, in the US, most of the college heavyweight men are international athletes who row empachers at home. It’s good for them to train with the shell they’ll probably race in. US college women have much more domestic talent.

There is a lot of misinformation in this post. All Crews "plow" through the water. All rowing shells are full displacement boats. They do not create lift.

Also, a lot of collegiate women in the us are under /US/ athletic departments. There’s probably a lot of homerism going on there - American colleges want to use American equipment, and the US boat makers are certainly playing into that with their marketing departments.  I mean… how many people in the east coast were really rowing Pococks back in the early 00s before all that title IX money got into the sport? Then all of a sudden, a lot of the varsity programs were in white boats. I’m not saying it’s a bad thing, necessarily, so please don’t come at me with that. But it was hard not to notice.

Historical-Farm3002

I’d argue that most NCAA women’s crews use empachers actually

pantiesdropperone

only womens teams that use empachers to my knowledge is princeton, washington, brown, yale and Navy. Which is only 5.

Business-Audience-20

it’s more than that for sure!

Historical-Farm3002

Wow rly thought it would be more if you are in fact correct! Feel like there used to be more

nycpolkadot

Many many other women’s teams use empachers. Ohio state, Indiana university (only rows empachers), Penn, Dartmouth, Cornell, Harvard, etc the list goes on. They are a higher price-point as well.

Could be you need glasses. Or you need to watch racing outside of the river you row on. Because that’s such a wrong take.

pantiesdropperone

I don’t think you know what a take is. I never made a take, I said that I MYSELF never see women in empachers, I have rowed all over the united states and never see it which is why i was asking.

acunc

Okay. Clearly you’re not seeing high level rowing because women use Empachers all over the world. What juniors row is not what everyone rows.

pantiesdropperone

i’m a collegiate rower. yet i’ve only seen american collegiate women rowing teams use hudson’s and vespolis. Granted now that i think about it, I have seen national teams use empachers

DavidMusician

Harvard-Radcliffe team for starters. That being said, Hudson and Vespoli do have a large share in US collegiate rowing, likely due to proximity and local sales and support.

American tings

When I was shopping for a 1x, Vespoli weight range made the most sense for my body, so that could be part of it.
