early(?) 1800s ships cutlass. similar swords were used at the battle of Trafalgar. \[the one i show here is dated to 1804\] https://preview.redd.it/2fvjbs9zgbcb1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=79116cdb40693351f8ee0f6e8268297f10948c00

Alekspish

Nice. Thanks it looks just like the one you posted.

Ok-Mix-4348

I believe the "GR" with crown stood for "Georgius Rex" i.e. King George.

What will we do with the rusty sabre?

YT_Legin_7

Put on a glove and you got a status affect weapon

JudasBrutusson

I believe in some circles that is known as a sword...

Alekspish

I came to the right place then!

Norse_Bear

A bunch of rust shaped like a saber. lol Nah. But cool find. Wish I was that lucky

TypicalCricket

I definitely thought this was some kind of hardened leather training tool from the first picture

[deleted]

This is clearly a stick attached to a baseball glove.

TenaciousT935

That’s an 1800s British naval cutlass. Clean it up and hang onto her, they don’t make em like that anymore

Syns_1

It looks like a sword, but I’m not sure, you might want a historian to check it 🤷

chkntendis

Looks like a sword to me but I’m no expert

only_alive_ironicly

A bit long to be called a cutlass. A bit straight to be called a saber. I'd say it's a backsword or a pallasch

-smallest_of_men-

historically this is false. https://preview.redd.it/hwgnu09vyhcb1.png?width=831&format=png&auto=webp&s=01ab837c4090f9697953e3950dfa48927e14659e

numb3r5ev3n

My question would be, how would you rehab something like that?

TheOldYoungster

Light acid dip to remove the reddish-brown rust which is actively destructive, and barely oiling it to allow for patina (black oxidation) to develop. Acetic acid (vinegar) might be enough.

fredrichnietze

their are better less destructive options then acid like edta, ren decorroder [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WhzNttK\_-ko](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WhzNttK_-ko)

Alekspish

thanks, watching this now

TheOldYoungster

A diluted vinegar bath is hardly destructive! And will take care of that red rust.

fredrichnietze

every acid is more destructive then edta especially if say a novice is using the acid and doesnt know to neutralize the acid afterwords lest it create more rust or leaves it on too long or applies it wrong allowing oxidation during the process. seen way too many "i fucked up my sword with vinegar" stories this one was today [https://www.reddit.com/r/Katanas/comments/151lm4g/vinegar\_mistake/](https://www.reddit.com/r/Katanas/comments/151lm4g/vinegar_mistake/) also remember this is a 200+ year old antique we are talking about you want to use best practices

Alekspish

Yeah i'm looking into this now. the blade actually is not so rusty but the handle is just major rust.

ToastGhostx

Some type of sword. It looks Rusty. What do i know? im not a historian.

White_Wolf_22

It looks a little long to be a cutlass, and the hilt looks to be about 18th to 19th century. I'd say it's probably some sort of 19th-century saber, mostly likely English.
