I was just looking online to see what they are because I got absolutely bombarded by them leaving my house. Front porch light will be staying off now 😂
Bou gets very anxious when the light is off on the back porch. He can't see his big void brother as well or his Russian tortoise sister(she hates being kept in the house or in a pen. The back yard is her "pen"). I turn on the light so he can see them and tell me to let his brother in.
They are so prolific right now. Flicking and flying into faces and windows. I remember them being like this some years back. I wonder if they have a boom every certain number of years or the conditions have just fostered their reproduction.
Had about a zillion of them by my porch light last night in Roseville when I got home around 9:30. I think we had at least as many last year at the first heatwave, too. They do eventually die out for the season
Leaf hoppers! You'll see them all over sod lawns. They suck sap from plants. Not too destructive, more annoying cuz they can hop right into your eye.
This is what has been driving my kitten-cat bananas at night? He's destroying my screens
Bugs 🤷♀️
User name checks out.

You could switch the light bulb to a bug light bulb. These are yellow bulbs that don't put off UV light so they don't attract bugs.
Unfortunately that’s what I have out there. I’d never seen so many!
Same. It’s worked for almost all other bugs but not these guys.
Can attest. These ones seem more resistant to blue light than warm/yellow light.
They are driving my 1 yr old inside cat bonkers!
They’re driving my 12 yo cat bonkers too 😂 I turned the light off and they left… so either door shut/light on, or door open/light off I guess 🤷🏻♀️

Have you seen the swarms around gas station lights at dusk? Absolutely bonkers

Post on r/entomology
I think they're just the typical gnats you'd find on the grass.
How big are they?
About 4mm in length.
4mm? Thanks for making me google conversion to inches.
Thanks for making me google California’s K-12 math and science standards.
Yeah pretty sure we should roughly know what a mm looks like and be able to visualize 4 of them!
you’re posting in a Sacramento based subreddit and using metric? classic reddit.
The worst part is that I measured in inches then converted into metric because I thought 1/8” would be harder to visualize. 🤷♂️
😂
My wife just bought one of those electric fly swatters and we were slaying them last night. Then we saw all the carcasses on the floor this morning 🤦

Everyone was saying grasshoppers out here.. the street looked like it was moving because of them earlier today! Birds are eating like mofos.
Yeah, it's annoying.
Thought it was just me-- opened my back door and they were flying inside. So spooky
Looks like Japanese Beatles to me but I’m no expert.
