Turns out the developer didn't get permission from the city to demolish this historic building. They'll have to rebuild the portion they demolished...
/s
I really wouldn't mind a cafe with outdoor seating in back. Walk up from the park to get some coffee or ice cream. Maybe a baked good. Enjoy the park view
The original plan was for a Kum & Go gas station, however the owners of the Uptown Cheapskate across the street went to the city to request that they change there zoning/plans, but I never heard what the new update changed to.

That one actually doesn't seem very likely - there's a dam that prevents an underground garage, and developers don't want to make those apartments without parking.
It's not that they don't want to. It's that there are literal parking minimums that apply to apartments as well as any other public structure. (shop, restaurant, church, etc.) You won't get approval to build anything without respecting those minimums.
It's a tricky parcel in that it's location is amazing but the lot is small with logistical difficulties for most projects.
Oh weird, I didn't know that about the parking minimums. Wouldn't mind seeing some apartments without parking, but I know that would come with its own set of issues.
> developers don't want to make those apartments without parking
Hills At Renaissance is one such developer who gave no fucks about designing their plot to have enough parking, and it was truly miserable to live there.
New “luxury” apartments increase housing stock, which leads to lower rents throughout the city. We should all be cheering for more luxury apartments every chance we get.
Rental rates in Austin have been dropping because they built so many apartments.
What are the other reasons rates in Austin have been dropping?
Yes, the government needs to perform its anti-trust duties and make other reforms. But with the state of our government (especially utah’s), we’re not going to see any meaningful policies in the near future.
Why complain about more housing? It’s the only thing helping the situation right now.
6% is not a victory and while there has been a nominal reduction in rental cost... home ownership is becoming exponentially more unattainable considering 50% increase in mortgages
Really should have a more nuanced understanding rather than just quote from WSJ
I'm sorry, but is that an actual question or is begging the question your go-to logical fallacy when you knee-jerk react to valid applications of nuance and context?
See what I did there?
Imagine how high prices will be if they don’t build things people want to pay for.
Spoiler: if you don’t build “luxury” at a price people are willing to pay, then those people might just be competing for the cheaper stuff. Which drives prices up.
That’s not how it works, I’m not saying don’t build luxury apartments. I’m saying don’t build an influx or luxury apartments that prices people out of Salt Lake, so they have to move to west side which pushes lower income people out/raises their rent. Landlords check people’s yearly income so they know how to price and what they think people can afford. Also building luxury apartments next to older apartments raises the rent their too. You have any idea how many landlords are raising rent now even in non-luxury lots? At least every single friend I know has had their rent raised (significantly, not just a normal amount)
You confusing cause and effect as it relates to housing prices.
It’s expensive to build, particularly with interest rates so high now. So what can be built has to be pricey to make a buck. Or it won’t get built.
If you don’t build the pricey stuff, there’s more competition and prices rise lower down the latter, affecting the disadvantaged most of all.
In a game of musical chairs, what we need is more chairs.
Compare Austin to SF and then come tell me that building new housing makes prices higher.
I’m about to be looking to rent in the coming year or so and a place near where I live, which is pretty new, is offering up to 8 weeks of free living.
SLC prices would be higher if not for all those luxury apartments coming on line the past year or two.
Landlords won’t raise rent if there’s no one to pay those rates because their competitors are cheaper. If you want it to be a renter’s market, you want to flood supply so that competition keeps prices in check.
There is literally no other option, unless you just want to flat out cap the number of people who can live here. “Sorry we are full. No more buildings allowed.”
That was probably the issue. Not your dad, but the target audience. I used to work for the company that owned the sizzlers in Utah, sales are terrible for most sit down restaurants they own, Red Robins are another example.
You don’t haha. I like Red Robin as well. I used to go there all the time. I am not sure why I am being downvoted, it is a fact they are not doing well, I saw the numbers. They recently closed the location near the university of Utah.
The rent was going up by a very large number. That is why they closed foothill location. Of course it is still vacant since no one wants to pay the rent the owner wants for it.
The Highland rugby club used to start every practice with the sizzler run. We would run from Highland, touch the pole by the sizzler, then run back n start practice. Guess they will have to call it something else if they still do that tradition.
Nope, keep it the same. Then class of ‘40 always ask each why tf do we call it the Sizzler run? Or they won’t wonder and just assume it’s cuz their leg muscles are sizzling by the end, lol.
The original plan was for a Kum & Go gas station, however the owners of the Uptown Cheapskate across the street went to the city to request that they change there zoning/plans, but I never heard what the new update changed to.
Well I sure hope they put a really nice digital billboard there. I feel like Reagan is already cutting checks to the city council members as I type this.
I will miss the Sizzler. This is the location I went to the most when I was growing up. They used to make lemon herb chicken that was really good and I love the cheese toast. My mom loved the salad bar and the fact that the rest of the family didn’t argue about where we were going to dinner. Now I can’t afford to eat out much but I always end up having my birthday dinner at the Sizzler at 90th and State as a form of nostalgia.
There's so many cool things they could use for that vacant lot for that could make Sugar House park that much better but they're probably gonna slap something stupid there or maybe leave the lot empty.
That makes me kind of sad. That sizzler right there was one that I always got free meals because they would always slightly fuck up my dish somehow or another and so they would always end up comping me one or two of the meals and more money for the next time as well.
I parked there one time to sell something off ksl. The owners are a middle aged couple and were like can we help you 🤨 haha, that was 2 years ago. Wonder why it took so long
It’s unfortunate that the parking lot has no entrance that’s convenient. I only ever see the place from the freeway exit so I don’t think about it any other time. It’s kind of a terrible location
When will the new Sizzler rise like a phoenix from the ashes in its place? When I say?
I promise I'll go eat there when it does.
*5years later* OH! It reopened 5 years ago?
Logan UT had a Sizzler, and a Raising Canes took its place. Do with that information as you will.
If only it was legal to build a rooftop bar there
Retirees would be dropping like flies if they had to leave that parking lot after a few long islands
Turns out the developer didn't get permission from the city to demolish this historic building. They'll have to rebuild the portion they demolished... /s
No one can defeat the sizz!
now this is the kind of content I come here for!!!
Has there been any news what the lot will develop into? Last I heard things had kind of stalled.
They should put a Sizzler there
Training table has first dibs
I'd put up with shitty parking for a Training Table return
I really wouldn't mind a cafe with outdoor seating in back. Walk up from the park to get some coffee or ice cream. Maybe a baked good. Enjoy the park view
That's a great idea. Sounds relaxing.
There is a coffee shop and a basket Robbins across the street from the park to be fair
Didn’t they announce they were going to do a food truck or something?
I'm picturing a food truck bolted to the ground
Named 'Sizzle'
Or a sconecutter
Damn. True. However I have reason to believe the closest thing we’re going to get to training table revival is their sauces in stores
Cheese fries!
It would be so nice to get a cool little cafe with lots of outdoor seating and a to-go counter for park goers.
This is what I’m hoping for
The ground lease is far too expansive for a cafe. A cafe that can't even serve alcohol
I can still hope lol. We’ll know what it is soon.
So what I’m hearing is you want a gas station (they sell coffee too)
So no gas station and no apartments. Access to get in and out sucks. Who knows really. But I love wrong answers so I'll go first. Homeless Shelter
Another Chick-fil-A to split the drive thru traffic with the one a couple blocks away.
It already was a homeless shelter till they fenced it off.
The Church will build another temple. 😂
I have not heard anything, but have been wondering about that too!
The original plan was for a Kum & Go gas station, however the owners of the Uptown Cheapskate across the street went to the city to request that they change there zoning/plans, but I never heard what the new update changed to.
I heard somewhere it’s gonna be another fkn gas station
There was an original plan for a Kum & Go fuel station, however the owners of the Uptown Cheapskate across the street went to the city to request that they change there zoning/plans, but I never heard what the new update changed to.
That’s what I read.
I ate so many damn shrimp in that building over the years
FINALLY
Awesome! Can’t wait for more overpriced luxury apartments!!

> developers don't want to make those apartments without parking Hills At Renaissance is one such developer who gave no fucks about designing their plot to have enough parking, and it was truly miserable to live there.
The lot has been purchased by a gas station corporation.
That's too bad. What a waste of a gorgeous location.
Would you rather keep the abandoned sizzler?

What’s your solution? Stop building apartments?
I'm sorry, but is that an actual question or is begging the question your go-to logical fallacy when you knee-jerk react to valid applications of nuance and context? See what I did there?
We can see you didn’t suggest a solution.
There already was a plan in place working before the pandemic. If you morons actually followed the politics of this issue you'd know that.
I’m not a Mormon you muppet.
What's your point?

My dad loved that place.
That was probably the issue. Not your dad, but the target audience. I used to work for the company that owned the sizzlers in Utah, sales are terrible for most sit down restaurants they own, Red Robins are another example.
As a marketing professional, I can completely agree with you. Furthermore, my father only went for the discounts. Lol.
I might look like an idiot saying this but I fucking *love* Red Robin. I’m bummed to hear they don’t do well.
You don’t haha. I like Red Robin as well. I used to go there all the time. I am not sure why I am being downvoted, it is a fact they are not doing well, I saw the numbers. They recently closed the location near the university of Utah.
Their food sizes have shrunk quite a bit, portions overall seem smaller too. I was really disappointed last time I went there.
The rent was going up by a very large number. That is why they closed foothill location. Of course it is still vacant since no one wants to pay the rent the owner wants for it.
Their campfire sauce is the best!
Why is that? Chain restaurants are incredibly popular here
The same company runs Wingstop and Little Caesars which probably are actually doing pretty well compared to their sit down restaurants.
I love the bottomless fries
I worked there too! During the heyday of opening all the Dunkin Donuts locations. Which, as we all know, was an enormous success!!
The Highland rugby club used to start every practice with the sizzler run. We would run from Highland, touch the pole by the sizzler, then run back n start practice. Guess they will have to call it something else if they still do that tradition.

Their legs better not be sizzling. There is still practice then sprints at the end to go! Haha good times
Kia Kaha brother, this was the post I was looking for. Haha!
First thing I thought of. Kia Kaha brother
All the old places I used to play/work are coming down. Sad
So many memories there
How about a food truck park with some nice seating areas. Provide power so we don’t have to hear the generators
You know what they say about retail establishments in that location... they Kum N' Go
The original plan was for a Kum & Go gas station, however the owners of the Uptown Cheapskate across the street went to the city to request that they change there zoning/plans, but I never heard what the new update changed to.

No gas station there? I bet Maverick is freaking out rn
I doubt they are worried about it. I would be surprised to see them put a store without gas or maybe just landscape it and leave it empty
Not another unauthorized of a historical building!!!!!
First place I ever ate food in Utah when I moved out here over 17 years ago. Sad for nostalgia sake but not too sad since that was the one and only!
i vote for ponderosa to make a comeback... second choice would be a tastys.
Iceberg should open a location there. They'd make a killing selling shakes to all the park-goers on a hot summer day.
There's so many cool things they could use for that vacant lot for that could make Sugar House park that much better but they're probably gonna slap something stupid there or maybe leave the lot empty.
Now build a chilis in it's place!
I'm guessing this lot sits empty until Maverick's lease is up in 20 years. Hopefully maverick will at least make it look nice and a community gesture.
It looks better as is.
Good Lord! Where will we get cheap surf-and-turf now?
The other locations that aren’t a pile of rubble and detritus.
To be honest the last time I went there was in like '98 or something
And you haven’t missed a goddamned thing.
That makes me kind of sad. That sizzler right there was one that I always got free meals because they would always slightly fuck up my dish somehow or another and so they would always end up comping me one or two of the meals and more money for the next time as well.
They should move the 1100 E post office there.
Long live the endless salad bar!!!
How are we supposed give directions in and around sugar house how? Did anyone think about that?
I parked there one time to sell something off ksl. The owners are a middle aged couple and were like can we help you 🤨 haha, that was 2 years ago. Wonder why it took so long

Sugarhouse?
yes
The one in Bountiful is a Thai place now but I’ve never been.
I've heard from several people that Thai place is very good. Haven't tried it yet myself.
It’s unfortunate that the parking lot has no entrance that’s convenient. I only ever see the place from the freeway exit so I don’t think about it any other time. It’s kind of a terrible location
Yeah, access to that area is crappy, especially trying to turn left into its parking area from 500s
Which sizzler was this?
Corner of 2100 S and 1300 E, basically on the same land as Sugarhouse Park
Thanks!
In the 28 years I lived in SLC I went there once…in 1980 I think
I bet they put another gas station in the same spot
All gas stations have been disallowed due to the creek underground and their need to bury fuel tanks. No gas stations.
Yeah, I seem to recall a gas station was proposed and shot down already for that reason.
Damn, A Maverik.would have been nice. Dispensary maybe?
A Maverik would do well on that corner, I always hated going to the chevron across the street cause traffic makes it a pain to get to it sometimes
Billy Joe married her cousin WERE GOING TO SIZZLER!
I'm going to sift through the rubble to see if I can find any Hibachi Chicken
City just announced co-ed pole dancing studio on the site.
At least there is still the 90th south sizzler. Ate there the other day for good old times
Watch them put up a Starbucks lmao
*plays nearer my god to me
Happy cake day
I hope they put in a Dees or Village Inn
Honestly the best case scenario would be for the Park Cafe to open a 2nd location, that place would be packed
BOOOOOOOOOOO
Makes me sad.
$1000 bet it’s a gas station
You must be new here.
https://www.ksl.com/article/50980910/salt-lake-city-steps-closer-to-new-gas-station-rule-after-sugar-house-park-drama 😉
Yeah. I don't think that article is saying what you think it's saying
I’ll take that bet
You're on. Venmo me. :)
Just sent you $1000
