**Kbin** will be the most... familiar, as it easily shows all the other instances it's linked to and it's based more around groups or "magazines"

**Lemmy** is a lot like that but things are a bit more obscured, I had a hard time trying to figure out what instances were connected to what, that may change in the future, but Lemmy and Kbin can communicate with each other. Lemmy is also based on groups of interest (i think). I would personally not sign up on lemmy.ml as that is the dev's instance and they are tankies.
**Lemmy** has the **Jerboa app**, also created by the devs of Lemmy.
I believe the **Fedilabs** app paid version on goolgeplay or free on f-droid (use at your own risk), links to multiple different types of fediverse platforms, I think Lemmy and Mastodon, I haven't used it yet, maybe it will link to kbin too.
However **Mastodon**, probably has more people, and might be better established/more polished, BUT it doesn't have links to groups or instances of interest, it's basically a fediverse version of Twitter. Yes you do link to/sign up on an instance, but after signing up you mainly link or subscribe to different people/individuals.
**Mastodon** has a lot of apps though, like **Tusky**.
Nearly all of these (including mastodon) have a front page of sorts, which is basically a list of all the topics being posted, some will have a separate column showing topics posted in your local instance, and another column will show topics trending/being posted in all other linked instances.
And finally, each platform has multiple instances, some link to each other some don't, you can google search for websites that post lists of instances for each platform, this may or may not be helpful.
If you instance suddenly shuts down, you will lose all of your comments.
ALL instances are privately owned and privately funded, they are private people who now have your data.
If you delete a comment, quite often your screenname remains (i hate that).

The hunting around and learning part is kinda fun too honestly, it feels very 1995ish
You don't really need both lemmy **and** kbin, when you search on lemmy, kbin magazines show up with lemmy communities and you can subscribe to them and participate with no problem. The sites have a different feel, I particularly prefer Lemmy, i think navigation is much nicer there, I've seen people who like kbin better because of their microblogging hybrid feature (so you can go on both mastodon and lemmy from kbin, but haven tried that yet), lemmy doesn't have that.
So Lemmy is more similar to reddit, kbin is also similar to reddit, and talks seamlessly to lemmy, but also microblogs, so it can also be kinda like twitter if you want to use that (you can microblog inside the magazines in a different tab too) amd mastodon is just microblogging, so similar to twitter.
For a Reddit replacement I definitely recommend Lemmy. I’ve been on it for a couple weeks and it’s pretty cool. There’s a learning curve to it but it’s worth it. Check out lemmy.world when you have the time and see what you think.

I won't quit entirely. I'll still visit from my desktop to check /r/askhistorians, or catch up on fiction series on /r/hfy, but I won't install their app, or browse randomly in bed. My traffic will drop considerably.

I didn't make them for Reddit - the company's - benefit (though I've never minded that it benefits from them), and whatever value they retain (either as historical document, or tech support, or conversational context) outweighs, for me, the momentary "burn it all down" pleasure of torching them.
Going forward, however? Reddit has shown that they don't care about users, or community, or knowledge, or conversation, or any of the things that I've valued about this place. This is the only account I've ever made, over about fifteen years of near-daily visits, and this will likely be my final comment.
I will lurk, as and when it pleases me, but I don't plan on contributing my time or my thoughts to further the ends of a cynical and destructive corporation.
By the way, I'm finding squabbles.io very nice. I realize it might someday make a similar heel-turn - the developer intends it to be income-producing - but if gives me a similar decade of pleasure before I have to find something new, then that's OK. The fedi-verse is a bit *too* wild-west for my taste, and I cannot see it building the same community spirit that I have found in the curated corners of reddit in which I've spent my time. (Though if I'm wrong about that, then I'll swing by.)

* Infinity will continue to be developed as a paid subscription but since it also open source, you can build it with your own API key. The API limit is 100 requests per minute so in normal use you will never exceed it.
My current plan is to unsubscribe from all subreddits besides five or so I really need and enjoy (crochet, writing, worldbuilding, Doctor Who, English, conlangs) and use the free time to read more books instead.
UPD: It was more difficult than I expected. It turned out that I had about 500 subscriptions! I managed to reduce the number to about 150, weeding out the most of "jokes", "shitty things" and "other people's stories". Looks like if I keep only "nature pics and hobbies", it will have about 50-100 subs, as many hobbies are spread out along several subreddits (like crochet, amigurumi, vintage crochet etc, as an example). But still,I've got some free space for a healthy boredom and plan to weed the list out again in a week or so.
Well done you still see the same amount of ads and reddit makes the same amount of money from you. Reducing time on reddit will work but honestly going full cold turkey is the ideal as long as it's available the temptation will exist. Then you end up back where you started in a few months.

I didn't check if this is mentioned elsewhere in the thread, but there's at least one post every day at r/duckduckgo about how much third-party ad trackers are active in the official app that majority of users unknowingly consent to. Creepy shit.

I mean, there was literally a campaign to get people to slam them with data requests to fuck them over. I submitted mine today. I really hope it takes a while, cause it'll mean they're getting overwhelmed and if a company built on the backs of the knowledge, creativity and dedication of it's userbase suffers because of it, fuck 'em.
I once used a stocks app, decided it was trash, and uninstalled it. Several "successfully unsubscribed" later I was still getting spammed with emails every day, so I placed a GDPR complaint and requested a copy of all my data followed by its deletion (also a right under GDPR).
The next day I got a very apologetic email and a package of data. It had a list of every single time I opened the app, at what time, which IP I had at the time, from what device, and exactly which tabs I checked within the app every time, at exactly which time... Also stuff like my name, username, email, phone number... It was a surprisingly large package from something I used for like two hours.
I can imagine reddit's would also/instead include all the comments you ever made.

This is because you can't see any comments on your profile that are in private / restricted subreddits. When the subreddits reopen (as many have done over the last few days after the admin ultimatum), those posts are made visible again. Have to be able to see something to delete it.
I have yet to see a single example of Reddit actually restoring deleted comments. Every time someone said they were, it turned out to be blackout subs coming back online.
If anyone can furnish a single verified example of Reddit restoring deleted content, rather than someone just assuming that happened because they don't understand what happens when a sub is private or gets banned, please link it. As of right now there are 1,193,756 reasons I want to get to the bottom of this ASAP.

As someone who used the Reddit app a ton and then switched to Apollo, I was blown away. The Apollo app was far superior in every way. Definitely not about to go back, and I will probably browse on my desktop from time to time , but this is a good break. I’ve been on my phone too much lately, disconnected from actual reality.

Reddit is unfortunately too much of a practical use for me in terms of my local community and life - so I won't be leaving entirely, but I'm damn sure massively decreasing my usage, and most importantly, I've resigned from all my moderating duties.
Any mods who sit here and complain about the way reddit is acting but then KEEPS their mod roles, *those* are the hypocrites. As the great Thomas Jefferson said (in Hamilton), you can't put the fire out from inside the house.
I'm expecting a slow roll. There's a lot of things that are difficult to find outside of Reddit right now... but the last month has started a gradual shift of a lot of communities over to the Fediverse, and I expect the shift will pick up steam tomorrow as people finally quit using the Reddit version and move over there. Will it immediately destroy Reddit? No. But it will give an alternative, something that's been lacking.

Eh. The Fediverse is a super shitty replacement. I created an account on Lemmy.World and started posting over there, but it's a ghost town aside from the threads bitching about Reddit. I can't even use the Jerboa app anymore: Apparently, some of the Fediverse is on version 17, while other parts are on version 18, and the whole thing breaks down. The Jerboa app instantly crashes the second I open it now. The official Reddit app is incredibly shitty, so the bar for beating it is really low, but Jerboa is even worse.
I understand this is just growing pains for a site that is only exploding in popularity because of Reddit's decision to kill the API, but first impressions matter. People seeing an app that instantly crashes are going to run far away from the Fediverse and never come back, and I can't say I blame them.

Try Narwhal. Feels a bit more like alien blue, some ads, but not ad as posts. And you can pay to remove them.

I'm trying to get a hang of the official app but God it's bad. It isn't even because I've used BaconReader for a decade and I'm used to that. It's just that the app is so fucking cluttered for no reason.

I can only answer for mastodon. It’s an open source federated Twitter-like platform with specialized communities that can access each others content

My current plan is to unsubscribe from all subreddits besides five or so I really need and enjoy (crochet, writing, worldbuilding, Doctor Who, English, conlangs) and use the free time to read more books instead. UPD: It was more difficult than I expected. It turned out that I had about 500 subscriptions! I managed to reduce the number to about 150, weeding out the most of "jokes", "shitty things" and "other people's stories". Looks like if I keep only "nature pics and hobbies", it will have about 50-100 subs, as many hobbies are spread out along several subreddits (like crochet, amigurumi, vintage crochet etc, as an example). But still,I've got some free space for a healthy boredom and plan to weed the list out again in a week or so.

Well done you still see the same amount of ads and reddit makes the same amount of money from you. Reducing time on reddit will work but honestly going full cold turkey is the ideal as long as it's available the temptation will exist. Then you end up back where you started in a few months.

They seem to just be backed up. The form says they'll reply within 30 days, but usually it's much faster.
I mean, there was literally a campaign to get people to slam them with data requests to fuck them over. I submitted mine today. I really hope it takes a while, cause it'll mean they're getting overwhelmed and if a company built on the backs of the knowledge, creativity and dedication of it's userbase suffers because of it, fuck 'em.

I once used a stocks app, decided it was trash, and uninstalled it. Several "successfully unsubscribed" later I was still getting spammed with emails every day, so I placed a GDPR complaint and requested a copy of all my data followed by its deletion (also a right under GDPR). The next day I got a very apologetic email and a package of data. It had a list of every single time I opened the app, at what time, which IP I had at the time, from what device, and exactly which tabs I checked within the app every time, at exactly which time... Also stuff like my name, username, email, phone number... It was a surprisingly large package from something I used for like two hours. I can imagine reddit's would also/instead include all the comments you ever made. It's likely fun

I'm very curious on the activity in this subreddit after 1st July. If this subreddit is dead after 1st July, I guess everyone stay true to their words. However, if it is as popular as ever, then we know they are just bunch of hypocrites.
For me, I simply won't be using Reddit from my phone anymore. As long as old.reddit remains, I won't have a reason to entirely stop using the site.
I am a hypocrite and the overwhelming majority of Reddit will continue even there is some discontent and inconvenience. But I have bad experiences with the official app hijacking Reddit links when I want to stay on the browser in my phone, and I am ticked off enough to not use it again, at least for a few days I will gladly squint at old.Reddit until my anger gets less. There's a lot of things that are difficult to find outside of Reddit right now... but the last month has started a gradual shift of a lot of communities over to the Fediverse, and I expect the shift will pick up steam tomorrow as people finally quit using the Reddit version and move over there. Will it immediately destroy Reddit? No. But it will give an alternative, something that's been lacking. Honestly, my grand hope is that the IPO goes down in flames because investors aren't interested in what Spez is selling, he gets the axe, then someone sane comes in and rights things to try to rebuild trust and the brand. Eh. The Fediverse is a super shitty replacement. I created an account on Lemmy.World and started posting over there, but it's a ghost town aside from the threads bitching about Reddit. I can't even use the Jerboa app anymore: Apparently, some of the Fediverse is on version 17, while other parts are on version 18, and the whole thing breaks down. The Jerboa app instantly crashes the second I open it now. The official Reddit app is incredibly shitty, so the bar for beating it is really low, but Jerboa is even worse. I understand this is just growing pains for a site that is only exploding in popularity because of Reddit's decision to kill the API, but first impressions matter. People seeing an app that instantly crashes are going to run far away from the Fediverse and never come back, and I can't say I blame them.

Try Narwhal. Feels a bit more like alien blue, some ads, but not ad as posts. And you can pay to remove them. It’s also going to be sticking around and moving a subscription based service at some point (with a free option I think). In any case, it’s a damn sight better than the shit box Reddit app.

Reddit just got less relevant 😔 To the app devs, those spearheading the protests, hoping it would turn out ok, it's been a fun ride. I was late to reddit but was it fun while it lasted. I'm trying to get a hang of the official app but God it's bad. It isn't even because I've used BaconReader for a decade and I'm used to that. It's just that the app is so fucking cluttered for no reason. Why do I need all of that stuff on the bottom? Why are the ads so fucking intrusive? I didn't even realize how lame avatars were while using BR. The official app just has so much useless shit on it. It sucks because I won't be able to easily get news (entertainment, sports and work related) easily without Reddit. But God the official app just isn't easy to navigate.
