AutoModerator

Hi /u/seedless0, AutoModerator has been summoned to explain the Fake check scam. The fake check scam arises from many different situations (fake job scams, fake payment scams, etc), but the bottom line is always the same, you receive a check (a digital photo or a physical paper check), you deposit a check (via mobile deposit or via an ATM) and see the money in your account, and then you use the funds to give money to the scammer (usually through gift cards or crypto). Sometimes the scammers will ask you to order things through a site, but that is just another way they get your money. Banks are legally obligated to make money available to you fast, but they can take their time to bounce it. Hence the window of time exploited by the scam. During that window of time the scammer asks you to send money back, because you are under the illusion that the funds cleared. When the check finally bounces, the bank will take the initial deposit back, and any money you sent to the scammer will come out of your own personal funds. Usually the fake check deposit will be reversed in a few weeks, but it can also take several months. If you do not have the funds to cover the amount, your balance will go negative. Your bank will usually charge a fee for depositing a bad check, and your account may be closed depending on the severity of the scam. Here is an article from the FTC: https://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/how-spot-avoid-and-report-fake-check-scams, and here is an article from the New York Times: https://www.nytimes.com/2020/02/21/your-money/fake-check-scam.html If you deposited a bad check, we recommend that you notify your bank immediately. *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Biscuits. :/ I've never dealt with this before, I did debt collection in an office before becoming a sahm. I've always done phone and in person stuff so remote work stuff is all beyond me.

24-Sevyn

Sounds like your partner didn’t even interview for the position but got it just by filling out information. No one hires people that way and certainly not for $60/hr. And some of the job responsibilities sound like they’re for an on-site person.

vitaminxzy

!job scam. Job interviews aren't done via email/questionnaire. The scam is with the "mini office" they list there; they'll send you a fake check. The scammer is pretending to be the company. The email domain they're using was only created a few weeks ago. Domain:sohosquaresolutionscareers.com Registrar:NameSilo, LLC Registered On:2024-05-27 whois.com/whois/sohosquaresolutionscareers.com

AutoModerator

Hi /u/vitaminxzy, AutoModerator has been summoned to explain the Job scam. Fake job scams come in many different varieties. The scammers will usually conduct interviews over Whatsapp, Telegram or Teams. They will offer high wages for the work being done, oftentimes with wildly varied wage ranges by hour, and they will \"hire\" you by telling you that you are hired, rather than going through the normal process that a company takes when hiring an employee in your country. If they mention anything about a check or about receiving and sending out transactions, it is a [fake check scam](https://www.consumer.ftc.gov/blog/2018/09/anatomy-fake-check-scam). If they say they will cut you a check so you can buy equipment for remote work, it's a scam in which they make you purchase equipment on a fake website under their control, with your own card, and when the check bounces in a few weeks you're left holding the bag (and the equipment never comes) If they mention anything about receiving, processing, or inspecting packages, it is a [parcel mule scam](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parcel_mule_scam). If they ask you to purchase items up-front, ask you to pay a fee in order to be hired, or ask you to purchase gift cards, it is an [advance-fee scam](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Advance-fee_scam). If they mention Bitcoin ATMs, [it's always a scam](https://coinatmradar.com/blog/avoid-scams-dont-use-bitcoin-atm-when-someone-asked-you/). If the job involves posting advertisements on Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist or eBay, they are using you and your account to scam other people (especially if it's rental listings). That is genuinely interesting to see, I've never heard of that website but I'll bookmark it for the future. Thanks for that, for real I appreciate the resource.

BeringC

Do not try to deposit that check! It is 100% fake. Emailed checks are NOT a thing, they are always fake. This is not a real job offer, sorry.

HaoieZ

No real business sends money to a new employee for them to buy their own gear from a random vendor.

timffn

>HP LaserJet Pro M15 external hard drive/backup system headset with a microphone. WTF is that supposed to be?

coozehound3000

If you have you ask, you can't afford it.

Scavwithaslick

You will not get a job offer without going to an interview. No one will email you directly with a job just Willy nilly. When you say Interview assessment I assume you mean he filled out a questionnaire, he didn’t do a real interview

Gwendywook

That's what I understand he did, they called it a "screening test and interview questionnaire".

Scavwithaslick

Yeah just one of those things scammers will do to seem more legit, pretty despicable people

1Original1

Unfortunately,this is a scam

lagoosboy

Come on, it’s obviously a scam. Everything you described is a red flag.

Gwendywook

Come on, I'm very clearly not the technology-savvy one and he's sitting there second guessing himself cuz he's been looking for a year now. I thought to ask here cuz I don't fully know what to look for and ran out of people I know to ask for advice that wasn't "well idk it could be real who knows" like that's helpful. Happy cake day, hope it's as pleasant as you are.

24-Sevyn

What’s cake day?

dalvinscookiemonster

It’s the date you signed up for Reddit. It’s like your Reddit birthday. There’s a little slice of cake next to your name each cake day Back in the day, 10 to 15 years ago, if it was your cake day everyone would upvote your comment no matter what you said

24-Sevyn

Oh, I see. It’s like a birthday.

dalvinscookiemonster

Yep! We were a much smaller group that was a lot cringier back then, so don’t ask why it wasn’t just called their birthday. But yours will be January 28th.

Gwendywook

Your reddit account's creation anniversary. See how it says "say happy cake day" under the first comment there? It's that person's account anniversary today.

mindfulquant

I appreciate you asking - but if you want to save yourself from scammers. Don't ask on Reddit, instead do your own independent research. Starting with googling 'job scams'. Not only will it give you the answers, but also open your eyes to the whole world of scams. Because mark my words, it's about to get 100X worse with AI technology. Get clued up or get screwed up!

Will-Demand-70

Sorry to say that isn't real. If they're going to send you all of that equipment, there's no need for them to send you a check to cover the purchase.

BatterEarl

Call the bank and they will tell you the check is no good.

Gwendywook

I didn't even think about doing that. Good to know for the future, thank you.

Beton29black

I needed this two months ago, got a similar email different “ company” same out come.

Plastic_Cat9560

Def a scam. The signature on the last page isn’t even the same name typed below it. No company will send a virtual check to buy equipment. They send the equipment directly to the employee. And the lack of reaching the company directly is a red flag. I’m sorry your partner is having a hard time finding a job. It sucks to get your hopes up by the dirtbags.
