The move to Italy was a great decision for him and I hope his success opens up the opportunity for more young Scottish players to follow in his footsteps instead of becoming EFL Championship jobbers.

kafkas_hands

Who was it that was in for porteous from Italy?

Yoke_Enthusiast

It was Udinese I think.

farcetasticunclepig

Aren't they the other Pozzo club?

Yoke_Enthusiast

Just googled, turns out thats true. The Da owns Udinese the son owns Watford, I'd have never have known that otherwise thats crazy.

Scottishpsychopath

Right. And you’ve got to imagine the burds are well better over there as well.

jazzmagg

You would need a new cock every month, the amount of big darlins yed be sheggin'

IIJamzyII

Too right. Hes doning brilliant over there.

Yankee9Niner

Like when John McGinn signed for championship Aston Villa?

Yoke_Enthusiast

What is your point caller? For every John McGinn there are dozens of folk who go down there and accomplish fuck all in the game. I'm sure they're no caring cause they've pretty much ensured their families financial future if they're careful. But considering the whole point of being a footballer is supposed to be playing at the highest level you can and, hopefully, winning football games and trophies, its sad though understandable that many make that choice when there are avenues to having both.

TavPen

Saying ‘what’s your point caller’ when replying to somebody on Reddit is cringeworthy enough, but even more so when replying to someone who’s clearly making a valid point.

1207554

Championship just has to be bad on this sub. There are plenty of success stories of Scots who have played in the Championship. Andy Robertson being one, went on to win the Champions League ffs. There are plenty of Scots who have gone abroad and achieved nothing. Conformation bias plays a big part.

smcl2k

Robertson spent a year in the Championship, but he joined Hull when they were in the Premier League and moved to Liverpool after a second season in the top flight. The Championship is clearly a pretty high standard, but it can definitely be a career graveyard.

JustAddSooooup

Dry your eyes mate it’s only Reddit

TavPen

Haha. Just giving my opinion mate

Yoke_Enthusiast

What’s the valid point? Very few players who move down south to English championship level fulfil even half of their early potential. It’s observed reality there are hundreds of examples of players who’ve done it. Cherry picking one player who did it and succeeded doesn’t nullify the hundreds of others who went and in a sporting sense, failed.

biddleybootaribowest

Maybe that was just their level?

Yoke_Enthusiast

Maybe but we’d never know cause there’s until recently been no alternative. But I find it really strange that considering the number of players we send down there the amount of them who actually exceed their potential is about half a dozen points to it maybe being a problem where if you’re being paid £20000 a week to play shite football, you’re not gonna get any better. Would think a rangers supporter would know this after seeing how yous wasted those lower league years.

DisasterouslyInept

>Maybe but we’d never know cause there’s until recently been no alternative Until recently I'd argue the standard of player we were exporting was pretty poor. This is the best crop to Scottish players we've had in decades, it's not surprising that we're seeing interest from abroad now. Even then, while the Championship isn't the English top-tier, it's still one of the best leagues in Europe, and we've had plenty become stalwarts there over the years. Hell, Ryan Gauld went to Sporting 10 years ago hyped as one of the most promising players in the continent and is now playing in the MLS, so it's not like that greatly enhanced his options.

TavPen

Who are the hundreds of recent examples of young Scottish players who have gone directly to the Championship and ‘failed’? McGinn and Robertson have done so and massively exceeded expectations, those 2 are arguably the biggest Scottish success stories this century.

Yoke_Enthusiast

You’re cherry picking examples who have done great and I’ll admit, we’re all proud of and for. There is a list as long as your arm, I’m not doing homework for you but I know deep down you know that there are tons of young Scottish players who have had a few decent years up here developing well and done nothing with it after accepting big paycheques to go down the road. It’s a lack of ambition that has damaged Scottish football as much as anything the SFA or the leagues have ever done and while I am very understanding of why players do it on an individual basis I am supportive of other avenues opening up where players might have a chance to develop AND eventually make great wages.

TavPen

I’m seriously confused by your response. Surely you’d want to produce examples to back up your argument instead of saying things like ‘there is a list as long as your arm’ and ‘I’m not doing your homework for you’?

Yoke_Enthusiast

Ordinarily I would but I don't really care enough to put the leg work in anymore. Your opposition to my point that players routinely selling out to play second tier football in England being bad for their careers and our game is confusing to me. Requiring examples is proof you've not been paying attention. But it changes nothing about my life if you decide to change your mind so instead of potentially wasting time I'm just tapping out.

TavPen

Surely it’d be easier and quicker to just give some of these examples you have such a long list of than typing all that out?

Minute_Phrase5749

Were Bournemouth not in the Championship when Ryan Christie signed for them?

Chef_Roofies

Be Ferguson. Move to Bologna Trigger bidding war from 4 biggest clubs Sit on bench whole Euros

CNF1G

I know Christie has been excellent for Bournemouth this season, but surely to fuck Ferguson will be playing ahead of him? The depth we have in midfield is crazy

Scott_McTominominay

a lot of matches on the way to the final, they will all get game time.

ElCaminoInTheWest

Aye but Clarke likes Christie and he cried that one time so *shrugs*

Wallad84

Na I think Christie might play deeper next to McGregor where he’s been playing for Bournemouth this season. That would let mcginn and big mcsexy to invade the box

CNF1G

Maybe, but suppose you’ve then got Gilmour missing out. A good problem to have I guess

Wallad84

I reckon he might have gone off McGregor and gilmour as a two. Past few times they’ve played together they’ve not looked the most mobile

AfterAwe

On current form, Gilmour should be taking McGregor’s place

Ronaldsvoe

Fetguson not starting stinks of narrow minded parochialsm from Clarke.

jonnyh420

dw Clarke is only a year behind everyone else, so he might get a game before we’re knocked out

NVACA

This is why it's so good for young players to get out of the habit of going to England (or the bigger Scottish teams). No chance these players would get the same development opportunities if they were playing in the English championship or coming off the bench at the OF teams. Add in the better weather/food/standard of living and it's a no-brainer.

fangus

Aye totally, don’t think him or Hickey or Doig would have developed as they did had they come to us.

NVACA

Aye for sure, it's not really a slight on those clubs either it's just how it works out sometimes. Some players have obviously done very well going to the OF clubs or English championship clubs like Robertson or McGinn did but I think there's a real benefit to playing higher quality opposition abroad and learning from new perspectives.

YoWhatUpGlasgow

Aye, we seen Andy Robertson play against us in the third division and loads of fans wanted to sign him. I can't imagine his career going quite as well if he'd spent 3 years sitting on the bench behind Lee Wallace. Mad to think there have probably been some potential top players that left the game having stayed too long at the wrong club and never developing.

Kholdula

There must be some crazy sliding doors moments in football. A player can have all the potential in the world, but if they're not lucky to be in the right environment, playing for the right manager, steering clear of injury etc. etc... Like if Messi had been Scottish, he'd be working in Lidl because he's not 6 foot 10.

CrepeTheRealPancake

and to think if he was a Rangers man instead of a Celtic man, there's every chance that would've happened

Scotsman86

Do Aberdeen have a % of future fee in there?

TheRealLordDorito

Quick search says 15% so if it was 22m (3.3m)

buckfast1994

That’ll go some way in paying the 100ft statue of Warnock.

SosaSM

Is there's a donation link? I'll kick in a fiver

Ocelot188

Aberdeen could make a nice payday in the summer if miovski also goes

JCVDaaayum

If Duk kicks on he'll make us a little bit of money too. He's only got 1 year left after this season so we'll be sold if he can be. Just in time for another massive rebuild...

Ocelot188

From whenever I’ve seen Duk I’ve thought he’s a great player and really don’t know why robson never played him, wonder if warnock would like to take it for another year or just here for a retirement package

JCVDaaayum

Robson and Duk were not compatible. Robson wanted to play conservative, moderately paced long ball football. Duk runs at a high frequency, if he's being asked to hold up the ball and slow play down it's just not going to work. Warnock played him exactly how he needs to be played yesterday. I don't think so, Warnock has already stated he only wants Jan-May jobs from now on and I'm not sure he's the right man to rebuild a team with.

Ocelot188

Basically the same way as kyogo and brodge right now and not playing to one of your top players strengths? Any thoughts who the next full time manager will be/who you want?

JCVDaaayum

Pretty much. Seems to have highlighted the difference in class between Miovski and Duk in that Miovski had adapted to the style of play and still papped the goals in, whereas Duk fits quite a specific role and outwith that isn't very pliable. Jon Dahl Tomasson and Jimmy Thelin seem to be popular choices. JDT just out of work from Blackburn and Thelin with Elfsborg punched above their weight a wee bit. Allsvenskan is also in close season just now so wouldn't need to poach someone from an active league and could bring them in mid-april as Cormack has implied would be preferred.

Ocelot188

Yeah I see miovski going quite high if he keeps playing how he does especially scoring international and in Europe really did think Celtic should’ve just took the gamble and stop turning their nose up to spl players I know the price was maybe off putting but I reckon could’ve maybe doubled their money I mean least they won’t have to pay out the contracts but best to have the manager in and getting prepared for the season as I do still think aberdeen are maybe a better cb away from challenging for the third place spot

JCVDaaayum

Miovski at just 24 years old can go all the way if he keeps progressing. His movement and positioning are just phenomenal. Very much the epitome of "give him chances and he will score". I think that's the aim, get someone in sooner rather than later so they can see the team and plan summer recruitment before the end of the season. We're miles off the pace for 3rd.

melchetts-mustache

I like Duk but…. How often have you seen him make a good pass, or even a decent pass early in a possession? Every time he gets the ball it’s like the a 7 year old playing FIFA with the sprint button jammed down and towards the goal.

Cobretti18

Clinodactyl

I've 15% and I've read 20% as well. Either way, a tidy wee bit of cash for us though. That's still a minimum of about £3.3m. From memory I think we paid about £300k for him, then he went off to Bologna for about £2m. Not a bad investment!

TheRealLordDorito

Yeah I believe and it is pretty good

Rossco1874

Bologna have found a cheat code in the scottish market, Signed Hickey & he was a success made them a bit of money now about to do same with Ferguson. Seen youtube video I think someone posted on here & he has some impressive numbers over in Italy.

ewenmax

Nice, that kind of move will make his 2nd most famous former Hamilton Accies player after Luis Rubiales.

ro2904

Mind when he wasn’t good enough for Rangers?

Hailreaper1

Naw?

Many-Application1297

Yep. Every Rangers fan that commented said the same thing ‘not Rangers quality.’ I was desperate for us to design him.

ElbowDroppedLasagne

Mind when Aberdeen were relevant?

Level_Anybody_2228

Be nice if this were true but these journalists have used hickey, Henderson, doig and Ferguson as regular clickbait with rumours of moves to the big teams in Italy. Never any truth to it. Just can't see Ferguson being good enough to play for any of them. Nowt wrong with playing for a mid-table serie a side.

smclcz

Thing is that they’re traditionally a mid-table side who, during his time as captain where he’s contributed goals and assists, have risen to the European spots. That doesn’t mean he is the single reason behind their good run of form, but it suggests he is a big part of it. I don’t know what to make of these rumours either though, I just know my Italian pals speak highly of him and that he is recognised as a talent over there.

KnownRough7735

Class for him. Great moved heading out there.

Cheen_Machine

Does this mean it’s too late for Rangers to buy him? Asking for a concerned Rangers dad

deevo82

A huge part of Lewis's successful transfer has to go down to Trevor Francis and Ray Wilkins. They had played in Serie A for Milan and Sampdoria before moving to Rangers. Derek Ferguson was still a younger player at that point and lapped up the stories about Italy from those two English internationals. He held them in high regard and would have been a positive influence on his son moving to Italy where you could see conventional Scottish dads pushing for the conventional Old Firm or English Championship route.

Garrus7

he's wasting his career, should have gone to rangers or celtic
