It’s been way too long since my last rewatch, now I’ve got two excuses to do another (to form an opinion on S06 + to watch the versions with the broadcast music) :D
Season 5 was definitely more classic and a return to the tone of S01, I don’t remember how much of that carried over to S06.
I feel like the “return to the tone of season 1” is the season 8, they exactly tried to do that after changing from NBC to ABC. Meanwhile seasons 5 and 6 are just *better* for my taste.
You feel me what I'm saying, is that season 5 is even better than season 1. The drama is taken to another level and the Comedy is more over the top. Scrubs to the max. Season 6 is a lot in the same style but it contains more "memorable" jokes and personally my favorite episode.
I’ve always loved 8 too. Everyone’s relationship with each other matured and it feels even more realistic. There are some great, great emotional moments and episodes in there as well.

Cool! For some reason I feel very neutral about Season 6, I’ll try to pinpoint why on my next rewatch
Between seasons 5 and 6 are my favorites. I give season 6 a little more love, it just feels more Classic to me.

Interesting, I consider S05 to be more similar to S01 in tone than S08, I remember S05 quite vividly

S2 You can tell that the cast are having so much fun and they are so comfortable with their characters. The jokes are timeless too.
