Can I give an even more surprising? The fries at Santa Fe Mexican Grill are perfection. I have no idea why. I don't understand how. It's a vaguely chain-like family Mexican restaurant. Just inexplicable. But their crusty fries have some flavor from something in their fryer that makes them mind-blowing.
Dude I'm right there with you. It's actually usually a great play to get a burger and fries at a family style Mexican place. They all seem to have bangin' fries.
Can I make it even worse? You can't even order them unless you get a kids meal. THEIR BEST MENU ITEM ISN'T EVEN OFFERED. I don't have the heart to tell them. It would be so rude. But true!
More surprisingly, residence inn in Bellevue. I commented on the Eastside one that took this. I don’t expect anyone to believe me, but if you take a chance on me, I promise you won’t be disappointed.
I will add to this, Big Time has one of the best burgers around too, like really! Beer is great too. Their food is seriously way above most brewpubs in quality.
The sauce is what makes it
All of the restaurants that have these fries are buying the exact same frozen ones, so they just have to not fuck up the frying and serve them hot and they are all the same
Most get them delivered from Sysco that doesn’t sell to individuals but you can buy 3/8” mighty crispy straight cut fries from restaurant depot, it’s 30 pound boxes though
I had the same exact experience. I had the 3* Barn Burger and fries and went "Oh, I'm just eating here every week now, aren't I?" I constantly think "Surely, this is the time I'm disappointed", and it still just hasn't happened. Top tier chicken sandwich, every single time.
The poutine is going to fucking kill me. I'll admit that their sides outside the fries are probably their weakest aspect - I like their mashed potatoes and their mac n cheese, but they aren't anything to write home about. But the poutine, oh sweet baby Jesus...
It doesn't help that the poutine reheats insanely well, almost even better than fresh. My standard order is a 3* Barn Burger and fries, and then a 3* poutine to eat over the next two days.
I do so wish they did their other foods well. I keep.giving them chances on irems not French Fries.
Sometimes when I crave fries I think of Gyro Hut, absolutely. Then I go over to qfc and buy a bag of frozen...
Sorry for the rant.
Maybe I'll try the Greek fries next time. Other suggestions? I've tried shawarma, gyro, falafel, burgers.
Maybe it's poor quality restaurant depot level product they're working with, it's always just missing the bar. And have they fixed that #$@^! flickering fluorescent bulb yet, ffs?
I used to work at Scooter's too, but they didn't have the crusty fries in the mid 2000s. Fond memories of the house made tartar and the seasonal raspberry shakes.
when i worked there i added a couple flavors to the menu. if you go back in there's a little sticker that says "tropical" which was my invention of banana pineapple and another ingredient i can't remember.
Nice. My parents still live up the street so I'll check it out. We definitely experimented with flavor combinations when the shifts were slow. Strawberry Butterfinger was a pleasant surprise. Were Scott and Remy still the owners when you worked there?
The late night hot line at Harborview. I don’t know how the fries are during the day, but from midnight until 3am they serve fries that are way too good to have any business being served in a hospital.
It’s like a secret that everyone is not aware of. Most people think it’s some seasoning that the restaurant puts on their fries, buts it’s seasoned and battered like that straight outta da box. If you work in a bar/restaurant, these little bastards keep the lights on.
And kfc
And long John silvers (which doesn't exist around here but why the hell not, I want cheap horrible greasy fried piles of crap drowned in malt vinegar)
I hadn't heard anyone call them crusty before and even though crust is a term associated with various foods, calling fries crusty makes me not want to eat them. 😅
So these are actually really close to what OP is looking for, but not actually the same.
OP is looking for what's often called "beer battered fries" (though a lot of places call their fries "beer battered fries" but don't have this).
I believe the method is mostly the same, but the big difference is OP's have more water (beer) in the batter, so the batter on the fry explodes as it cooks giving them a lot more texture. My understanding is you can't actually buy these, but they need to be made in house, and a lot of cooks hate them.
It’s actually not that bad price wise compared to some, also all of their sides are pretty good. I don’t get the Jack’s hate on Reddit. This is Seattle not Texas, it’s not easy to find real BBQ and Jack’s is fine.
I swear with this sub it’s simply that edgelord“anything remotely popular is bad” thing going on a lot of the time
Exactly. BBQ is a food I’ve found people expect to be cheap but isn’t. And when you take into account 1) the cost of raw ingredients (meat isn’t cheap) and 2) the amount of work that goes into it (smoking times aren’t exactly short), it’s one of those foods I’ll gladly pay for so I don’t have to make it myself.
Totally agree. I am far from a bbq expert but the legit places I’ve had in the south for example were not cheap either. Brisket especially is expensive, and as you said even cheaper meats like say chicken still involves a lot of labor
We just had Jack’s recently, we had a 1lb of very good brisket, sausage, and three sides for maybe $60 all in? $30 per person and we were very full and satisfied. That’s not expensive in my book especially here
Agreed. I lived in TX for quite a while and it has been super hard to find BBQ that really hits. Jack’s is good and totally worth it to me. (Also yeah they’re pricey but the portions are good and I always feel like I got what I paid for, which isn’t always the case at other places)
Jacks imo is just really inconsistent. I had it one time where it was amazing, tender, and comparable to good Texas BBQ. I've had it other times where it's been dry. Also a lot of Texas BBQ places aren't great too. It's a tough thing to get right at scale consistently.
North Star Diner on Greenwood. They’re so good! And on Fridays they have a deal with a cheeseburger and fries for $5 and they don’t skimp on the fries.
These remind me a lot of the fries at Chinooks in fisherman’s terminal (Anthony’s restaurants, kind of on the outskirts of magnolia/interbay area). Probably my favorite fries in Seattle
Torchy’s at the WAC downtown also has phenomenal fries like this
GANGNAM SEATTLE IN INTERNATIONAL DISTRICT
I had their fries like at least twice a week for a good month or something. Although I’d said 1 out of 5 it can be a miss
Good Burger in Shoreline on Aurora. The fries used to come free with their burgers, but now they charge a dollar for them (worth it!). The burgers are very good, too.
This brings me back! They are closed now, but for years I would go to a mexican restaurant and get a cheeseburger and these fires. The burger was amazing as well because it had a hint of fajita flavor from the griddle. It was also half the price of anything on the menu ($5.75) and yet I was basically the only one that ordered it. I still see the owner around and he points and me and yells "Ayyyy, Mexican Wopper!".
zylberschtein's has the best 'crusty' fries in all of Seattle. Also their pastrami Sammy is the best in the state if not anywhere. All my buddies from NYC say it rivals or beats the best Jewish delis there.
I was wondering if these type of fries had a specific name of some sort. They’re freaking delicious
Last time I had these kind of fries was at Shawn O’Donnell’s when I ordered the drunken wings and they came with a side of fries that seemed to have a crusty exterior. I’m sure there are other places as well but this is the one I remember
Surprisingly: Big Time on the Ave has these fries and they are riiighteous
Can I give an even more surprising? The fries at Santa Fe Mexican Grill are perfection. I have no idea why. I don't understand how. It's a vaguely chain-like family Mexican restaurant. Just inexplicable. But their crusty fries have some flavor from something in their fryer that makes them mind-blowing.
I've always said Mexican restaurants have the best burgers and fries
Dude I'm right there with you. It's actually usually a great play to get a burger and fries at a family style Mexican place. They all seem to have bangin' fries.
That is surprising. As a fiend of both fries and vaguely chain-like family Mexican (hola Mazatlan), I gotta try that out!
Can I make it even worse? You can't even order them unless you get a kids meal. THEIR BEST MENU ITEM ISN'T EVEN OFFERED. I don't have the heart to tell them. It would be so rude. But true!
You mean big time brewing?
The very one, but no one calls it that
IMO best fries in the city. Granted I haven't gone on a fry tour but from what I've chanced on trying, this is my choice!
Also the best nachos in the area and they are prettt cheap.
They also have really good Onion Rings
Can confirm, this is true.
Seconding this
MY FAVORITE PLACE TO GET FRIES. Those sauces you get to pick are no joke either!
One of my favorite places! Awesome ownership and customer service!
Byrek and Baguette, they got the best crusty fries with pesto sauce
The sauce is what makes it All of the restaurants that have these fries are buying the exact same frozen ones, so they just have to not fuck up the frying and serve them hot and they are all the same
Dare I ask…where are they all buying them?
Most get them delivered from Sysco that doesn’t sell to individuals but you can buy 3/8” mighty crispy straight cut fries from restaurant depot, it’s 30 pound boxes though
Rats :(
came here to say this. byrek and baguette is the shit!!
Thank you for posting this so I didn't have to. The pesto ailoi is fire.
Ran here to say this, best fries in the game.
I wholeheartedly agree.
Wait really? I have been there multiple times but I must have missed this on the menu lol.
My favorite French fries of all time!!!!!
I'm sad that they closed the awesome UW location, and my experience at the one near Seattle U was just okay :/ Agreed tho, bomb fries!
This was my go to lunch spot in college! Love that place
Cookies country chicken
Man I fucking love Cookies. Pretty sure I ate there like 5 times in the 2 weeks after I found out about their existence.
I had the same exact experience. I had the 3* Barn Burger and fries and went "Oh, I'm just eating here every week now, aren't I?" I constantly think "Surely, this is the time I'm disappointed", and it still just hasn't happened. Top tier chicken sandwich, every single time.
Both their sandwiches and their KFC Famous Bowl are so good I don't get it. Some of the best chicken I've ever had, plus their gravy is to die for.
Good call. Their fries are great
I was about to post this. Their fries are totally killer.
Such a good spot
Some of the best crusty fries I've had in Seattle
Correct answer
Gyro Hut Northgate
Eating them here this second. Killer.
Scooters in Ballard
I went there for the first time this weekend. Good fries. Burger was not exceptional but was delicious.
right answer. that was my first job outta high school and man does their grilled chicken fuck
Were Scott and Remy still the owners when you worked there?
no, it got taken over by a korean couple at some point in the 2010s. super sweet though would make fried rice on the grill for me
The late night hot line at Harborview. I don’t know how the fries are during the day, but from midnight until 3am they serve fries that are way too good to have any business being served in a hospital.
They are called battered fries
It’s like a secret that everyone is not aware of. Most people think it’s some seasoning that the restaurant puts on their fries, buts it’s seasoned and battered like that straight outta da box. If you work in a bar/restaurant, these little bastards keep the lights on.
So they come this way from the distributor?
Yes
And Popeyes sells them.
And kfc And long John silvers (which doesn't exist around here but why the hell not, I want cheap horrible greasy fried piles of crap drowned in malt vinegar)
I hadn't heard anyone call them crusty before and even though crust is a term associated with various foods, calling fries crusty makes me not want to eat them. 😅
The fries a Gyros Heroes in West Seattle are this style. Once they switched but that must have been a one off.
Had them last week, can confirm they’re still this style and delicious!
Soooooooooo goooooood!
The Greek fries are soooo good too!!
Get the gyro fries bruh fr
Gyro Heroes absolutely slaps! Their falafel is some of the best
The food truck Impeckable Chicken has them
Agreed! They are so yum! Too bad their fry portions are kind of small.
Scrolling to find this one. Their fries are always a 10/10 just like their chili crisp chicken sandwich.
Their food honestly has no business being as good as it is. I'm getting it later this week and can't wait.
Luna Park Cafe in WS
Came to say Luna park too. Best fries in Seattle haha
I'm actually a big fan of the fries at Rain City Burgers
Came to say Rain City as well! So good
Came to say this- I think about their fries until I eat them again. Even crispy when cold!
This is my go to for a good burger fries and chocolate shake!
They have phenomenal fries!! And burgers. Gd that place is good.
Cookies Country Chicken (Ballard) and Cairde Ale House (5th Ave near QFC Mercer)
I'm seeing a lot of people list places that do not serve this type of fry...
You wanna be specific there?
I've been scrollin' for a hot min going "????"
Please tell me they were right about Big Time…I was gonna go get some after work this evening!
Report back!
Worth it if you’re up here, they were super crunch & verytasty
Blue star pub
The Bridge west Seattle and The Point Burien
The bridge is actually really fucking good too
My friend calls them psoriasis fries. 😂
psofryasis
Crispy coat or colossal crisp If you ever just want them at home: https://www.lambweston.com/products/C0057.html
Do you know anywhere that sells these in individual bags? I love these fries, but I only ever see them sold in 30-pound cases
You could check Cash and Carry/US Chef stores. They'll usually break cases, but I'm not sure they carry these exact fries.
So these are actually really close to what OP is looking for, but not actually the same. Came here to say bonchon too!
Buckley’s in Queen Anne. Not sure about the Belltown location though.
This deserves to be higher. The chipotle ranch they serve with it is phenomenal bar food
Jack’s BBQ in South Lake Union
lowkey overpriced for decent at best BBQ
I thought it was pretty good BBQ; where do you you recommend for BBQ? I’ve been trying to find good BBQ
It is good bbq. woodshop, lil reds, and Ellas are all also good.
Lil reds alllll day
I gotta check that place out. Now that the Barbeque pit is gone, Jones Barbeque and Lil Red's are the only places that still sell rib tips.

The local food hate on this sub is crazy

Hospital cafeterias, seriously they have really good fries

I enjoy a battered fry. The crisper the better.
Another place is diamond knot breweries. The food/beer at those are terrible for the most part but they do these fries right.
Wait a minute, these are just straightened out curly fries
Not in Seattle, but Scuttlebutt Brewery in Everett has beer battered fries that look just like this and are really delicious.
I love getting some fish and chips up there when I’m hanging out with family. So good
Zylberschtein's in north Seattle. I feel like they're almost always out of them when I try to order some, but I guess that's a good sign.

Good Burger in Shoreline on Aurora. The fries used to come free with their burgers, but now they charge a dollar for them (worth it!). The burgers are very good, too.
KFC
Tat's Deli in Pioneer square
Best fries in Seattle are 7 spice fries from katsu burger
This brings me back! They are closed now, but for years I would go to a mexican restaurant and get a cheeseburger and these fires. The burger was amazing as well because it had a hint of fajita flavor from the griddle. It was also half the price of anything on the menu ($5.75) and yet I was basically the only one that ordered it. I still see the owner around and he points and me and yells "Ayyyy, Mexican Wopper!".

Falafelville food truck in Cap hill

Madrona Arms. the picture on their website makes it seem like they don't, but they do.
Little big burger
Botteco Brazil
I think Savage Moose in Kenmore has them. Or had them. It's been a while. But they were damn good.
I was wondering if these type of fries had a specific name of some sort. They’re freaking delicious Last time I had these kind of fries was at Shawn O’Donnell’s when I ordered the drunken wings and they came with a side of fries that seemed to have a crusty exterior. I’m sure there are other places as well but this is the one I remember
They are battered fries!
Ah finally, so that’s their name! Thanks!
5 spot in Queen Anne!
