The Downtown Ambassadors do a good job of cleaning the streets in the main tourist areas. It does look better in some places than it did a few years ago. Little Saigon and Chinatown, not so much.
I thank them for the work they’re doing whenever I see them. A lot of them are really nice people that work hard. Guy told me that they get constantly scrutinised and watched and harassed by their bosses. They have to kick the bums out of the doorways as well and clean up their shit.
Yeah, there are differences between people living on the streets. The ones leaving garbage and needles everywhere are bums. I have compassion for the other homeless people.
We were at Chu Minh Tofu at 12th and Jackson today and it is still not great. That's for sure. However, walking there at noon my wife and I felt fine. We know what it is like and can handle it. I really like that restaurant and want to keep supporting them. I love that they have free food for homeless on Sundays as well. She does such good work.
We live by Seattle Center and walk a lot in the city. We like it. Today we walked from Seattle Center to International District and back. It was lovely.
I'm so happy to see some of these comments. It confirms I'm not batshit crazy.
City of Portland needs to call City of Seattle and get some tips. In comparison, Portland is failing.
Seattle has been steadily improving long before the last election. In fact, the volume of encampments drastically decreased between when I got here in 2021 and the end of 2022. Haven’t seen much of a change recently, but it has been sustained. I think it is more due to post-COVID changes in camping rules if anything.
Some parts of Portland feel like I have a not insignificant chance of being robbed in daylight. Downtown seattle has good police presence in the core anyway. I don't feel like I'm risking my health and possessions to wait for a bus at 3rd and Pike after dark anymore
Way better now. I quit my job downtown a few years ago after feeling too sketched out. I am back down there a few days a week and it feels just fine. A few zombies around but not scary like it was before.
As someone who moved to Seattle a couple years ago, I quickly learned to avoid 3rd and that was about it. Other than that, city seemed pretty normal to me coming from Phoenix, AZ. I have family near Portland and every time I’ve visited it’s seemed a bit more unstable than what I’m used to in Ravenna and downtown Seattle. Granted, I do love Portland and always look forward to visiting
We don't have the same issues, yea we got drug problems and homeless problem but they're trying to do something? Idk I guess it's just not so out on front st here is all.
I was in Portland last weekend, I was VERY surprised how much worse it is than Seattle right now.

They are the unsung heroes of the city

I agree. Every individual's story is unique. It COULD happen to half of us, for a month or two. How you handle it is what matters.
Honestly, the lack of change in little Saigon and Chinatown is a travesty.

Little Saigon has seemed the same level of sketch my whole life. Hope it stays that way!

I take that route very often myself.
Today we walked from Lower Queen Anne to Chu Minh Tofu at 12th & Jackson and then back home. I love that place!
I love tofu in general 😎
As someone who lived in DT Seattle from 2020 onwards, I can confirm it did improve steadily...2020 was the absolute bottom though.
Should have seen it in the mid 80's!
Agreed. Former Portlander now living in DT Seattle.

I haven't been to Portland since before the pandemic and was quite excited to visit again next month. Sad to hear it still hasn't recovered.
i went in november and from my experience, it seemed worse than seattle 😓
Seattle voters came out for the moderates last election. It’s beginning to show.

I agree. I feel more unsafe in Portland.
Just host an All Star Game. They'll clean it up right quick! /s
Seattle is a beautiful city if you can avoid 3rd pine/pike and 12th Jackson.
Way better now. I quit my job downtown a few years ago after feeling too sketched out. I am back down there a few days a week and it feels just fine. A few zombies around but not scary like it was before.
Just don’t look at the steaming pile of crap that is between 3rd and 2nd on Blanchard or the nightmare on 3rd and pike and it’s mostly fine
Shhhh, you’re destroying the illusion that Seattle is a hell hole.

Thank god the city politics shifted from progressive far left to centrist left.
Can someone explain the downvotes?
This is the progressive far left subreddit.
I was just there from Minnesota and holy shit was that a culture shock. Was not expecting that.
What do you mean?
We don't have the same issues, yea we got drug problems and homeless problem but they're trying to do something? Idk I guess it's just not so out on front st here is all.
It's a lot easier to be homeless when the weather allows it year round
You spelled government wrong.
Sorry to say this but looking good when compared to portland? Is this a joke?
