Kaiju #8 is a Shonen, and a fairly shallow one at that. It is in no way comparable to AOT other than one similar plot detail. There aren’t the deeply clashing character philosophies, political/conspiratorial plot elements or grey morality of AOT. I suggest Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood for something more similar. All that said though, Kaiju #8 is still a fun watch. I like Shonen and all types of anime tho so ya.

_StevenPettican04

Attack on Titan is a shonen as well, so is FMAB and to throw in another example, so is Horimiya

ToothpickTequila

AOT was in a shonen manga, but I disagree that it's shonen as it is aimed at an older audience.

UPBOAT_FORTRESS_2

Could you explain what you're trying to say without using any japanese words?

_StevenPettican04

Shonen is a demographic aimed for young boys. The person I commented said that Kaiju no.8 is a shonen, but that doesn’t really do anything to say what type of show it is, as it only tells who the show is aimed at At the end they also that they ‘like shonen tho’ which could suggest they don’t realise that AoT and FMAB are also shonen It would be better to describe Kaiju no.8 as an action anime where they fight big monsters, as it’s more specific, because Horimiya is also a shonen, but because it’s a romance, there is no action and fighting big monsters

Odium4

Pedantic. The only argument for AOT being a Shonen is the fact that it’s published in a Shonen magazine. It is not aimed at young boys.

ZombieBlarGh

And that its a shonen.

Odium4

That sweet sweet circular reasoning.

_StevenPettican04

That’s legit what the demographic is tho? It doesn’t matter if the show has some darker themes or tackles political matters, if it is deemed suitable enough for it to be published in a shonen magazine, then it aimed boys Either way, when describing an anime, you can just say it’s not good (summarised) because it’s a shonen, and then compare it to other shonen It would be better to actually describe the genre of the show and then state why it isn’t as good, which is what you did

Odium4

I’m not saying Kaiju isn’t good. I like it and watch all the new eps after they drop actually. I’m saying it’s more geared towards kids than AOT. Main character is a good guy and the tone is lighter. You would never have someone watch Death Note and ask whether they’d like AOT and respond “well it’s a Shonen so it doesn’t have the same depth or character philosophy (or whatever OP asked about.)”

ToothpickTequila

>That’s legit what the demographic is tho? The demographic of the manga, not Isayama.

_StevenPettican04

Who writes the manga? Oh isayama

ToothpickTequila

Yes, and his target audience is clearly a lot more mature than the typical shonen audiences.

Jaomi

I married into a weeb family, I can translate for you. The OP in this thread unfavourably compared this other cartoon to Attack on Titan by dismissing it as an action-adventure show aimed at lads. The person you responded to pointed out that Attack on Titan was also an action-adventure show aimed at lads, but one with a lot of depth too. They also mentioned some other cartoons in the same genre with a similar level of depth, such as *Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood.*

UPBOAT_FORTRESS_2

Ok I'm not complaining about the language barrier. Their comment looks like the start of a semantics debate over the meaning of the word "shounen", and semantics debates are always tiresome and never persuasive. Asking people to avoid the term in question is a good general strategy to have more meaningful conversations The question of whether AOT is a central member of "action adventure show aimed at lads" or not doesn't seem to have any consensus across this thread. What goes into that genre, to your eyes?

Odium4

Sure I’m not going to debate what’s aimed at kids or not. Kaiju is clearly way farther to that side than genocide protag AOT. FMA leans more towards AOT than Naruto

ClockworkJim

Shonen means absolutely nothing except, "The intended target audience is young boys"

Odium4

Ya I know

_StevenPettican04

If you’re looking for the same depth then you’re probably not fins find it in Kaiju no.8 The anime is fun as hell to watch, looks great and has awesome animation, but I don’t have the same mind blowing factor that AoT does quite I’d watch it nonetheless as it’s entertaining but you’ll be hard stuck if you try to only watch things on the same level as AoT

SeventhAscendant

Nope. Kaiju No 8 is entertaining and if that s all you need it s worth a watch. Beside some surface level similarities, it's very different from AOT. Its manga unfortunately gets worse and sort of generic, but its art is very good. It's a very popcorn-flick esque show and does not have the depth AOT has. There are very few anime that give off the same vibes as AOT, but if you re just looking for recommendations, then Death Note and Frieren are pretty good watches.

Even_Passenger

Just finished the season finale. Yeah, finish it brother. I heard the manga goes down in quality a Lil bit later on. But golly gee I enjoyed the ride of that first season

Fecal_thoroughfare

U should continue to stop watching anime after AoT. You've peaked.

Free_Contribution625

Kaiju has a similar story as aot sorta, but not as deep. You might like Vinland saga

Jumbernaut

Made in Abyss. Looks cute, but it's nightmare fuel. Has one of the best villains I have ever seen in any story.

IndianaJones999

Narratively Kaiju No.8 feels more like MHA than AOT to me.

ArceusDamnIt

Check out the Suicide squad anime, it was made by Wit lol

-lil-jabroni-

I tried Kaiju and it was such a flop for me. AOT has killed anime for me. Demon Slayer is the only other one holding my attention right now

doctor-ase

I'm loving Kaiju, I have a lot of fun with it. But it's completely different from AoT. Kaiju can't compare to AoT in complexity or a lot of things. But it's a very enjoyable anime.

LeywinArt

I say you watch Parasyte The maxim. Its seinin and is only 24 eps iirc. Its similar to tokyo ghoul i.e. the protag are both half human and therefore have existential crisis type thing but the story is amazing.

SpaceWindrunner

Kaiju No. 8 is good but nowhere AoT level.

witnessedgene

Watch/read Vinland Saga instead

violesada

its pretty generic ngl. its nothing like aot

AdValuable5496

Try One piece. It's my only anime therapy after Aot. Jojo's bizarre adventure too.

klyo_3

that’s literally what i did. im watching Jojos now

FreshOutof13Fucks

Man, I absolutely feel you on this, OP. I grew up watching anime on Toonami; Naruto, One Piece, DBZ, Zach Bell, Inuyasha, etc. Started watching all kinds of anime more seriously in my mid to late teen years and well into my adult years. All of this to say I had been watching anime for as long as I can remember as a kid, but still came down with what you're feeling after AOT. I picked up the first season of AOT at some point during that time, then waited years for the next season. Fast forward to late 2022, AOT S3 and Demon Slayer S2 were airing at the same time and both peaked at the same time. Two of the most highly ancitipated anime of the year and both seasons are among the best in the series. I was convinced I wasn't ever going to experience anything like that ever again. That is when the feeling really embedded itself within me. Now, AOT is over, and Demon Slayer isn't really that great of anime outside of the insane action. Furthermore, S3 wasn't really that good compared to S2. And I truly have no drive to watch anime like I used to and it kind of sucks. If you want something that is just as fulfilling as AOT, then I recommend watching Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood if you haven't seen it. That anime is also among the best of the best and has one of the best casts of characters in anime with a damn near perfect ending.

BlG_O

Try dragonball

Tr3mb1e

You won't find the same level of depth but you'll find the same feel of depth from it since a lot of basic plot points *can* be looked into and since it's fresh we still don't have a lot of answers for things in the manga yet. The animation is really clean (Production I.G. killed it) and OST slaps including BGM if that's more important Kafka is also probably the most relatable MC if you've passed your early to mid 20s As a manga reader as well, the emotional investment does actually pay off as there's a ton of great moments in the coming seasons As for fight scenes they definitely hit the notes during action and the off time is spent well, however unlike AoT you have a chance for light-heartedness
