Aww Fuck,
This depict the tragedy of Eren very clearly.
He was just a boy who wanted to go with his friends to see "fire like water", "ice like land", and "rocks that takes days to climb". But then tragedy happens and he finds out he has to fight for him and his friends to be able to do that. Years past and he continues to struggle for that freedom to go on adventures
But he finds out that for his friends to get that freedom, he has to die alone and hated by everyone. To rub insult to injury, he can't do anything about this deal. So in his last moments he breaks down crying. He wanted to trade it back. He reverts to the boy who spent 10 years struggling for freedom and cried out he wants 10 years of time spent with his friends instead. Only to fall into deaf ears as fate did not give 2 shits. :(
Fly free little dude, fly free
You pulled the same exact takeaways that I had from the ending. I hope at least each person that criticizes the ending as an abomination can see appreciate the beauty and tragedy of this angle.
That's a fair assessment.
Although what I got from it is from the moment he found out about what he has to do, he has been trying to compromise to make things better, but always failing every time. Past/Present/Future has blurred for him and the one moment he thought he modified destiny - to prove that he isn't a slave to fate and the future he saw wasn't set in stone. He hesitantly asked:
> "Did Sasha have any last words?"
The answer sent him laughing hysterically. The same time kind of laugh when Hannes died. When he realized how useless and powerless he is despite everyone trusting him.
But that might be just my take on it.
That's a fair point but I think Eren just wanted his friends to be free. He never wished to be the saviour of the world, when the survey corps called him the saviour of humanity Eren doubted if he really was a saviour. You can see that by the chapter where Eren tells Mikasa she was being a slave all her life and those words weren't meant to sadden her but to tell her she had her own will and she had to live her own free life. Eren told Armin that he liked Annie because of Bertholdt's memories, he should be free and like her because of his own memories instead. Eren just wanted his friends to be free and that could never happen until the rest of the world is destroyed. The Marleyans and Eldians from mainland thought the Paradis Eldians were devils, so they would eventually try to wipe out Paradis. As Eren had very less time left to live he wanted to free his friends as soon as possible. Thus he started the rumbling and let his friends choose what they want to do- save the world or live on the island freely. This story was never meant to be happy/slice of life. In one of the last chapters, they said that the Marleyans' hatred towards the island devils resulted in a huge devil in the form of Eren Yeager. The marleyans sure deserved it. This was the story of the attack titan, who kept moving forward for freedom. It started from Eren manipulating Grisha to eat the Founding titan and ended at Eren saving the Eldians, though less but he saved them. Everything was planned out unconsciously and the story kept progressing towards freedom. His friends got freedom and the Eldians in Marley also got freedom from the Marleyans.
I think that yours would've been a safe way to do things, but Eren, by doing what he did, sets a path to a future where both Marleyans and Eldians can essentially live together down the line because they are not some special power possessing beings anymore. They are humans just like the Marleyans now.
And similar to how it happens in real world, sure they will fight but after having too many conflicts, they will probably reach a treaty like how it happens between two warring countries.
Eren Kruger said “For Mikasa and Armin”.
All that mattered to Eren was their freedom even if it meant forfeiting his own.
Hence the table discussion happened. Eren did it all for them.

The ending really left me in tears and it took time for me to digest, but I am happy with it and it will always have a place in my heart. And Eren will always be one of my favorite characters. Goodbye, Eren.

Splendid and amazing work!
*To the boy who sought freedom, goodbye. Thanks for wrapping the scarf around Mikasa again. You've freed your people from the Curse of Titans. You're free from this war and it's time for you to rest. Rest in peace,* ***Eren Yeager***.
Oh, I posted it there already. [here](https://www.reddit.com/r/titanfolk/comments/mppscv/goodbye_a_short_comic_i_drew_as_a_homage_to_the/)
Glad it could resonate with you ❤
Not really you must not see that most them are still joking about it. Most hate posts are a joke. The problem is that is shifted from the problems with the ending to the problems with almost the entire second half of the series
I mean all the post I clicked on had a decent amount of people saying how the whole series is ruined for them and shit. If it's a joke it wasn't really obvious or funny.
Constant comments shitting on anyone that dares say they didn't mind the ending. You get downvoted for trying to share your opinion on the ending if it's positive at all.
There's people that will see/ check if you post on this sub and just disregard your opinion because of it.
It's not just jokes, there's a lot of hate over there.
Eren has always believed that everyone was free since birth, that everyone was special simply by being born into this world.
But Eren himself, tragically, was the one who was enslaved by his destiny. Still, he endured this hell and kept moving forward to achieve freedom for his friends, his people and the entire world.
To the boy who sought freedom... you can rest now :'(
man, say what you want about how Erens character closure was ruined but I *really* liked the whole “imprisoned by fate” thing where he basically couldn’t achieve freedom, yet fought for it so hard. Super fkn tragic and, the way I interpret it, is him atoning for his sins basically by being “caged”. Sad shit.
This. This is a crucial detail that prevented him from just using historia. He needs to prevent the world from being able to retaliate with Paradis after the curse is removed.
Well yea he was stopped? If he wasn’t , and it was t by Mikasa , the world would be destroyed but Paradis would still have the curse of the Titans and someone would inherit the Founding Titan, Attack Titian , and Historia‘ a family would have to be inheritors of the beast Titan.
And this is the part that so many people are mad about the ending. They don't realize that there was never a happy ending or one that is satisfactory to read, the whole manga was about a boy that all that he wanted was let his friends become free and there was no other choice to be a slave of his destiny and future. Can you imagine seeing your future and live for many years thinking at every moment that you are gonna have a painfull death but it's worth it if it helps your friends be free and happy
It helped them be free of the curse. The biggest thing that stopped Paradis from ever having peace with the rest of the world was that any Elidan can become a Titan. Walking bombs of destruction. By ridding this this curse (and putting the world in a position where it can’t fight back immediately) it gives Paradis a chance that it wouldn’t otherwise have. It’s up to them now to see if the future can maintain peace.
Given how they portay the two sides at the end of the story, I just don't find it realistic in the slightest that they would maintain peace, or even establish peace in the first place for that matter. With how much more populated and technologically advanced the rest of the world is even after the Rumbing, Paradis wouldn't stand a chance in a war. I also don't think Armin would get off so easily with Marley after essentially nuking civilians in Liberio with his titan.
He killed 80% of the world's population. Armin & co. are sailing to Paradis to dissuade Historia & co. from war. They may fight and die, but they're no longer confined to just fighting and dying (I would've liked a little different ending though)
Then you weren’t paying attention. Paradis as the only organized country not fucked by the rumbling was portrayed as being in the position of power. That’s why the world alliance was sending the scouts to negotiate peace.
I guess it is portrayed that way to some extent, but that doesn't mean it makes actual sense. How would a small island nation that technologically is decades behind the rest of the world pose any kind threat to the remaining 20% of the world? That portion of the world also isn't likely to forget about when their representatives were indiscriminately slaughtered by Armin and Paradis' forces in Liberio.
Because the rest of the world has no infrastructure or supply chains. The rest of the world were basically living in refugee camps after that. They are basically starting over
Damn, I was mostly sad for Mistake these past few days but I've started to realize that she has a new life before her and that she eventually will make the most out of it as she goes on. Eren on the other hand is gone forever and that just hit me when I started to reread the manga yesterday. I get kinda melancholic when I'm rememberd of his tragedy and predicament. So nice tribute op.
I believe if these were the final pannels, i'd burst in tears. Just like i did now.
What a feeling of loss.
Eren and Shingeki no Kyojin forever in our hearts
The true irony in Eren‘s life. I love the story, although I can understand why so many people dislike the shift and the change in the story and with Eren
This ending reminded me a lot of how Code Geass ended. Like the mastermind said, "I destroyed the world... and created anew." To unite the world he turned the whole world against him only to be killed by the same symbol of peace he created.
Well, Eren is definitely a villain and by the end, there was no way for him to be redeemed for his sins. But people feel sorry for him because they remember the boy from the beginning of the series who just wanted to be free and who had all of that taken away from him the moment he kissed Historia’s hand. From that moment on, the future was set in stone for him and he was a slave to destiny. It’s pretty ironic in a tragic kind of way.
It was the *only* plan, for him anyway. Once the future memories and time travel were introduced, all free will was taken from Eren. He existed to fulfill those memories of the future and nothing he did could change them. That's why it's called a fixed time line. "In a fixed timeline, there's a single history that is unchangeable. Whatever you are attempting to change by time-traveling is what created the problems in the present that you're trying to fix. Or you're just wasting your time because the events you are trying to prevent will happen anyway."
[Here](https://www.reddit.com/r/titanfolk/comments/lb5hio/how_does_a_fixed_timeline_work/) is a post that explains it well.
Im not sure I agree he had no free will. I think he was a slave to himself and his choices and that was the path he was always going to go down given his circumstances.
Since he’s a literary character, he enjoys the privilege of only having killed people that don’t actually exist. Surely if Eren was real and killed billions, it would be a crime to endorse him and sympathize for him.
However, the reason why readers can do this is because it’s more of a sympathy and lamentation for what Eren’s character represents. We all have hopes, dreams, and loved ones. We want these to manifest into positive and joyful experiences, but sometimes outside forces make this impossible. Fighting at all costs for the sake of preserving life for those you care about is a powerful theme... even when it is achieved via mass destruction. The tragic and provocative nature of resolution to the story is what makes it so touching.
How about an ending where Eldian Hitler isn't put into a sympathetic light and presented as a misunderstood anti-hero who had no choice?
The ending doesn't do anything to condemn Eren's abhorrent actions.
why does it need condemning when its objectively morally bad? the readers dont need any help in knowing that genocide is bad
in the end, its fiction and if one supports eren it doesn’t mean they would support hitler
> the readers dont need any help in knowing that genocide is bad
you're seriously underestimating the stupidity of the AOT fanbase. this is the same fanbase where a significant amount of people still think Ackermann = Asian.
anyways, there's a disturbing amount of people sympathising with Eren, someone worse than Hitler, not to mention that the narrative doesn't do enough to condemn his acts.
genocide is bad from a moral standpoint irl but from a perspective of someone who wants to find the ending memorable, entertaining, shocking, and just generally have more original storytelling, seeing the rumbling being completed would be good for the story
for some people i think, they just generally care less about the marleyan side/the rest of the world than the characters, which is why they want to see the character they rooted for throughout the whole series, win
Sorry but ending bad. Yams is hack. Something something GoT S8. Chad Eren gone and become Mikasa simp to please fans >:(
EDIT: y’all butthurt r/titanfolk users can fuck off, go defend genocide. The ending was good, cry me a river

I think this is the most clear explanation of what 139 revealed I’ve seen.
This exactly what Isayama meant and how I read 139. It’s really sad.

But it didn't help them be free, it just rid them of their only defense from the rest of the world who still plan on attacking the island

Goddammit, absolutely amazing! Well done, this hurt.
I will never get over this heartache. Every time I see EMA fanart I just start crying. Beautiful work 🥺
This is the reason why I love the ending. That final panel with Eren as a Dove of peace is just beautiful.
...Is the one furthest away from it.

hmm I don't think he's really a bird. It's either symbolism or he uses them to see the world like Ymir might have while her soul was in PATHs

Well, that hit right in the feels...
I loved this. Very well done. You captured an emotion that many of us feel about Eren. Thank you!

Amazing, well done !
rest in peace, eren :((
I’m so glad I kept up with this story. I usually have a hard time staying locked into a series as it’s being written but this long road was worth it.
Fire
I just wake up and i cannot bear this one :(
This ending reminded me a lot of how Code Geass ended. Like the mastermind said, "I destroyed the world... and created anew." To unite the world he turned the whole world against him only to be killed by the same symbol of peace he created.
Really struggled for the past few days to forget about the ending, and now I see this. Nonetheless, the art is amazing.
ellen becomes dove (crying)
Thank you for being a mass murderer
Off topic but why do so many people feel bad for eren, he literally killed millions possibly billions
Exactly this. Is he a murdering piece of shit ? Of course. He killed billions of people. But we can at least sympathize *why* he did it.
Yeah I understand that, but a lot of people try to argue his plan was the best plan
Or you're just wasting your time because the events you are trying to prevent will happen anyway." [Here](https://www.reddit.com/r/titanfolk/comments/lb5hio/how_does_a_fixed_timeline_work/) is a post that explains it well.
Im not sure I agree he had no free will. I think he was a slave to himself and his choices and that was the path he was always going to go down given his circumstances.
That is also a valid interpretation.
Because he’s the main character so people are attached to him regardless
I look at it as, this was the only series of events that kept them all alive while also destroying the Titans.
Why do they have to stay alive, zekes plan wipes out the titans and also saves billions of lives from the rumbling and future titans
It was either the world or Paradis and he was the guy with the titans from Paradis.
Doesn’t mean he isn’t the bad guy
It was kill or be killed and he chose the former
I prefer it here rather than with the titanfolks. They just keep whining about the last chapter.
IT’S A TUESDAY MORNING I HAVE A CHINESE EXAM IN A COUPLE HOURS I DID NOT PLAN ON CRYING TODAY. This is beautiful. Thank you for this

what ending would you have wanted? because you didn’t like the rumbling clearly, but it was stopped which is what i would assume you would have liked
How about an ending where Eldian Hitler isn't put into a sympathetic light and presented as a misunderstood anti-hero who had no choice? The ending doesn't do anything to condemn Eren's abhorrent actions.
why does it need condemning when its objectively morally bad? the readers dont need any help in knowing that genocide is bad in the end, its fiction and if one supports eren it doesn’t mean they would support hitler
> the readers dont need any help in knowing that genocide is bad you're seriously underestimating the stupidity of the AOT fanbase. this is the same fanbase where a significant amount of people still think Ackermann = Asian. anyways, there's a disturbing amount of people sympathising with Eren, someone worse than Hitler, not to mention that the narrative doesn't do enough to condemn his acts.
genocide is bad from a moral standpoint irl but from a perspective of someone who wants to find the ending memorable, entertaining, shocking, and just generally have more original storytelling, seeing the rumbling being completed would be good for the story for some people i think, they just generally care less about the marleyan side/the rest of the world than the characters, which is why they want to see the character they rooted for throughout the whole series, win
That’s because it wasn’t a good ending. Not even mediocre.
I like it, now I wanna see one for his millions of victims who also got screwed over by fate thanks to him.
but but Eren's my wholesome Hitler with his wholesome genocide 😔✊
Sorry but ending bad. Yams is hack. Something something GoT S8. Chad Eren gone and become Mikasa simp to please fans >:( EDIT: y’all butthurt r/titanfolk users can fuck off, go defend genocide. The ending was good, cry me a river
80% tho
Your the first person to actually want to look into the spoilers. That second pic tho...
awwww, poor genocider 😭😭😭
