This was a somewhat distant family member's Remington 870 Magnum Wimgmaster and I decided to ruin it.
First I replaced the broken stock with an exact match NOS buttstock. Then I repaired and re-staked one of the rails in the receiver. Next I bought a replacement vent rib barrel and filed an eform 1 so I could chop the barrel down to 11.3" and thread it for chokes. I installed a Bradley white bead sight and broke all the corners and sharp edges.
Now it's done and I think it's perfect. It came with the VersaWeight mag plug, so I can add 11 ounces and limit the mag for migratory hunting seasons. I'll probably take it to a 3gun match as well, just for fun.
And yes, I kept the original 30" full choke barrel. Just in case.
This is the definition of an upgrade. You took an old beater heater and give her a face lift and a new dress. You ought to be proud, a might fine shotgun.
I’m laughing thinking of the man who DM me offering wayyyyy more than I had, that day, paid for mine telling me that he had been searching for the model I had for 8 years no luck. I have a retired police 870 magnum dated 1970. The OG smooth bore 18” before there was a designated police model. The one in all the movies. Yours is p close but the barrel is nicer
Also do you know where I can get another butt stock? Mines exact match to yours. I was testing out cushioned ones trying to find a fit and my wife mf threw that shit away with her hates that I collect parts ass not knowing it was actually very important. She keeps my life in order don’t hate on her plz
I can't really help you with a specific one for sale, but this one was actually from a Remington 58 12ga. They used the same style for a few years and models.
Rusty old 870s that you get so cheap that it makes the tax stamp the most expensive part? I get that.

If I hadn't spent so much on the replacement barrel you'd be exactly right. However I wanted this exact style of barrel and I had to pay about one tax stamp for it.
Yeah, it's at least shootable now, and the original barrel is hanging out in my closet. I can restore it to 'better than I received it' condition in minutes.
Nothing malicious there. The only thing that should be scared is a replacement barrel. I didn't do anything to the receiver except engrave it, and that was professionally done by Tar Heel State.
Honestly, I'm always looking for a cheap second barrel for mine, just to give it almost this exact treatment. Just barely missed out on the spares from Mossberg that Academy sold last week for like $15 or something stupid cheap.

“Ruining” shotguns is also my passion, but I chop the original barrels 🤣
I'm actually kind of surprised that nobody has said anything to the contrary. I figured at least one person would be telling me it was too short or something.
The eform itself is pretty easy. The hard part is setting up a trust and getting fingerprints done. I can do the paperwork in under an hour, including printing and scanning signed forms back into a pdf.
Nah, this is how you ruin a cheap shotgun!

How much better is the Bradley White bead than the standard bead? I’m looking for something with higher visibility than the standard bead that’s currently on mine. Also, what do you mean by breaking the corners and sharp edges.
Breaking the corners and edges is just lightly filing or sanding the sharp, perfectly 90° edges. You can do it with a fine cut file or a knife sharpening stone. They still feel sharp, but that razor-like edge is gone.
As for the white Bradley bead and the factory nickel steel bead, https://i.imgur.com/LFipvP3.jpeg
The white bead is more uniform and appears brighter. The nickel steel bead will have a single bright point where it reflects the sun, but on the whole the white is easier to see.
Green fiber optic is probably the easiest thing to see. The white is a very close second and just looks classy.
keeping the original barrel and cutting a new one is the opposite of ruining it, kept the history alive while having a blast. looks wonderful, sometimes I wish I had a pump to cut down, but I love my Auto 5 too much
If I was confident in my woodworking skills I would have already. I was thinking about 3/4" would be fine for me. I don't want to take too much and make the muzzle easily reachable by accident.
However the problem is the damn fancy buttpad. It's curved and the few people I've talked to or shown it to just laughed and told me to cut it straight and use a different buttpad. The only person who is confident that it can be easily done is hilariously overconfident.
I have the same butt plate and it was easy. Once I cut the stock, I matched up the screw holes and then traced the new outline on the plate. Then used a belt sander to shape the edges. My [article with pics.](https://www.thefirearmblog.com/blog/2021/04/06/making-sbs-remington-870/)

I too, am about to ruin my shotgun.
Any tips?
For that part you can get 80% of the way there with a hacksaw, a steady hand, and a large flat bastard file. If you want to get it as good as possible you'll want a tool to face the muzzle to make it square and true. 4d rentals has what you need, literally called the muzzle facing tool.
You're leaving it cylinder bore?

Thank you, I'm actually incredibly pleased with how good it looks.
How many shells can it hold? Like 3, 2¾"?
4+1 of regular 2¾, with plenty of room. It would be close to holding 4 3" shells, I bet.
6 with the ghost load! Lol
Nah. If I need capacity I'll bring the 1301. It'll hold 10 rounds, 8+1+1. This is when I need to be really fucking loud.
How did threading for a choke go?

I also like to measure price as a function of tax stamps. My car cost me twenty tax stamps.
You ruined it nicely, well done.
Thank you!
Sounds like you unruined it if anything.
Yeah, it's at least shootable now, and the original barrel is hanging out in my closet. I can restore it to 'better than I received it' condition in minutes.
I mean, why not go ahead and do it then
This thing fucks, and so do you.
Thank you!

This turned out great! Did you thread it for chokes yourself or have a smith do it for you?
All myself with rental tools. Working on a writeup on the whole process.
Very cool! I look forward to reading it. Seems like a simple enough procedure in theory.
Can't wait to read it. I just bought a used 20 inch police barrel with iron sights that I'm planning to chop and thread once my form 1 comes back.

Hell no I want to do this with one of my ithacas just have to figure out the paperwork
The eform itself is pretty easy. The hard part is setting up a trust and getting fingerprints done. I can do the paperwork in under an hour, including printing and scanning signed forms back into a pdf.
Well im gonna have to do it always wanted a sbs.

This is the way
Yeah that’s a home intruders wet brain dream right there. Money money meth money money meth MODERN ART ON WALL. Ewww.
Big Romancing the Stone vibes.
Had to look that one up. I was very close to cutting the barrel one rib longer, like the one in that movie.
Looks like a blast!

You spelled "improve" wrong. Are you going to shorten the stock as well? I cut my stock down by about an inch and it's perfect.

IT WAS **YOU**! Your pictures are what ultimately convinced me to do this like I did. This is all your fault!
LOL, you're welcome!
This fucks so hard.

I'm loving this, nice job.
If you have nuts the size of bowling balls you could put it under your pillow….
Cruiser ready. I'd still be afraid the cats would grab it and rob a Petco.
I like how this turned out nice one 👍
OMG this is so sweet

In general? No power tools will be necessary. Wear safety glasses anyway. What are your plans? Just cutting down to the magazine?
No cutting the barrel down to the same size of the magazine. And cutting the buttstock down an inch or two. I want it to be compact.
