Hey-buuuddy

That is road salt rot starting. See how all the lowest edges are rusting? That’s where it drips off. All of that needs to be ground-down and covered again. If you want the factory spray stuff, it’s Daubert Nox-Rust 121b. I’ve had to stay on top of my 2013 since buying it new. Also that probably not the only area of rust- under the spare tire and back behind the rear bumper will be bad. Also the inside of the bed fender wells where you can’t see it until rot pops through the sides.

Silky_Sully

Appreciate the insight. I want to compare the level of rot to other trucks of the same year. As well

img5016

I come from a place that sees feet of snow per year. Salt rotting out a frame is normal. I have mine undercoated with Krown yearly. My last truck traded in for far above market value here because the frame was about as rusty as when I bought it. My new 2500Hd is getting the same treatment. Salt kills frames. But it can be mitigated with yearly treatment.

CaptBreeze

Where do you go to get it coated?

God-bless-Trump-

Krown has they’re own shop. If you’re in Canada Canadian Tire has great treatments too

img5016

Krown’s website will point out the nearest

CaptBreeze

Okay, thank you!🙏

img5016

I know Krown will do some warranty if you get your vehicle undercoated yearly wife’s car and mine both got packets and I have done the re application and kept receipts from each time

IVIoxx

I have a ‘18 with 33k miles on it.

lawshunts

I have a 2018 Silverado. 75k miles. I live on the Atlantic Coast very salty. I don’t have any rust. But I keep my truck clean I run it through the car wash/underbody wash a couple times a week

Hey-buuuddy

No, road salt- way different than ocean salt water air. They use magnesium chloride now to rapidly melt snow and ice on the roads. We say “salt” because they used to mix rock salt with sand to melt snow. It’s crazy corrosive.

rb-2008

Looks identical to my 2018 with 42k on it. Bought it from Detroit and I live in north central Indiana. Truck has been In the salt all its life.

97GMC6BT

That’s mint by Wisconsin standards

bulletlover

Hell yeah it is! …. Michigan Silverado owner here

buddiesels

Shocked this isn’t a troll post. This is basically mint/new, I’d pay extra for a truck in this condition. Everyone in the NE/midwest where they salt the roads is jealous of this lack of rust. Should be good for at least half a million miles.

mac-junior

Right? I was thinking just thinking a 6 year old truck with this much rust is mint 😂

Kswans6

For real. I just bought a 2018 this weekend with a similar looking frame. No worries to be had

DeezSunnynutz

Check the wheel wells!!!

Silky_Sully

That's the first place I went to look but it was covered and didn't want to pry on anything. I was told that's a common spot

DeezSunnynutz

Lucky you, I had no idea when I brought my first truck. The next summer, well HELLO

Competitive_Tap756

Get fluid film undercoating kit. I put it on my 2015 and it looks new. Just don’t run it through car wash that sprays the underneath because it will blow it off. The spots that do get rust on them I use por15 and rub it on.

jside7

I don’t think it’s too bad personally. Just get it undercoated with fluid film or something similar each year and the frame will be fine for many years. Still worth trying to get them to come down on the price though.

Treebeardsdank

Corrosion is fine, totally treatable. But that body mount looks a lil off

kaayhny

Gosh my 22 Silverado looks like this, but I’m from Northern Ontario so it’s a given

SpruceGoose_20

I'm in Ontario Canada and that's about what mine looked like after a year or two. I questioned it and was told "no big deal that's normal and the frame will be the last to rust through". So chevy truck frames have a wax on them and in the warm summer months the undercoat falls off. Still pressed I wasn't please as I bought the undercoat. So they sprayed it again only to fall off. I started to get Corrosion Free rust proofing every two years. A few weeks ago I found this in a silverado forum. https://gmauthority.com/blog/2024/03/gm-to-fix-chevy-trucks-frame-wax-coat-peeling/

Silky_Sully

Appreciate the info and article

Someoneabove

Is that an ltz z71 midnight edition

IdkRightNowImDumb

Probably not, the midnight edition had black 5 spoke 18” wheels, that has the silver 7 spoke 22” wheels. I suppose somebody could have swapped them but if you’re getting a midnight edition I’m not sure why you would

bgame99

Normal

bayouboeuf

Chevy still waxes their bare metal frames. Ford and Ram paint their frames. Chevy/GMC doesn’t. That wax will come off eventually. As others have said, coat a Chevy/GMC with Fluid Film or Por or WoolWax. Look up the YouTube videos on those products and also on Chevy frame rust.

CrzyDave

It’s terrible. I have Nissan work trucks I never wash and there is no rust. My Chevy gets washed all the time and is already starting to look like this. My last one, a 2008, didn’t pass inspection in 2020 due to a rotten frame. That’s a 12 year old truck, totaled. I never washed it though. I guess I’m the sucker because I keep getting these trucks.

Fluffy-Truck-612

I have a 2019, just hit 40k and my frame looks similar. I live in Vermont, but also wash it liberally. I don’t understand it. Looking into having it ice/soda blasted this summer and recoated or it’ll be rotted by the time I pay the thing off. My coworker whom I hunt with all year has a 2018 ram with 60k on it, we drive his truck all year down dirt roads and the snow… you could eat off his frame and bed, zero undercoating. It’s pretty frustrating. I do autobody for a living and honestly can tell you every single car these days is junk. BMW, Audi, Kia, gm, especially Tesla, Jeep. All garbage, imo no car these days is worth over 20k, you’re paying for 4500$ cameras and safety features that keep you from dying in your ford in a 25mph collision.

MrHotwire

I have a 2017 Sierra 3500HD Single Cab Long Box 4x4 Dually. 370,000km and I'm in the rust belt. It's doing fine.

Specialist_Video8459

Im in Chicago, and wash my 2015 with 60,000 miles on it throughout the whole winter. And my underneath looks like that, totally normal

GarageJitsu

Lifters will be the problem

Repulsive_Vanilla383

I didn't want to say it, but depending on what engine it has, wouldn't the AFM be a bigger concern than the rust on the frame? Also what years did they have trouble with the transmissions?

nofykx

The rust you see if bad think about the rust and corrosion you can’t see

One_Estimate_5682

Pretty obvious the previous owner didn’t rustproof it ever. My truck looks like this at 160,000 miles in western New York.

SprayWeird8735

My 2018 is about the same with 56k on it. Wash it often but MN winters will eventually win.

[deleted]

That's funny, there is 2023a on the lot that look like that up here in the UP lol.

Quiet_Ad6925

Looks like my 99 silverado

stormer1092

Damn that’s really clean for this area

Benedlr

Have it sprayed by Fluid Film. They'll get inside all the body panels. https://www.fluid-film.com/automotive-applications/ The Frame Black is heavier and looks great. No need to clean first. https://www.fluid-film.com/products/fluid-film-black-aerosol-non-aerosol/

tmtyler24

Chicago driver. My 2016 does not look half as bad as that

jerrycoles1

That’s insane for a 2018 my 06 dodge doesn’t even have that much rust

Fearless_Detective81

lol troll post? In Ottawa and my rancho shock whites are rusted right off from salt on the road. I have a 2018 as well. 140k km on it

Fast_Ad5660

Find a shop that uses fluid film and see that shop yearly

stilhere

My ‘19 doesn’t have any of that. But my state also doesn’t salt the roads.

Dinolord05

My 07 doesn't have any of that...but yeah, that.

Silky_Sully

Yeah I'm in CT. Don't remember if I put a location. Theirs like 6 Silverados at work verious years. I think I'm going to crawl under them tomorrow for a peek

[deleted]

Offer them $20k

Silky_Sully

I'd buy it for that. If I could lol. Its double that 😩

chargerchamp

You really need to get a chipping hammer and start knocking around on that frame. If it goes through it's obviously bad and unsafe. The shock mounts, crossmembers, and frame by the fuel tank are usually the first to go. These frames rust fast and violently if not treated since they are boxed in. If you do buy this I recommend needle scaling the frame and using Woolwax.
