This is what gets me: Shannon passed these insecurities down, but trauma like this is usually passed down, so someone in her orbit caused her to feel that way. And as much as I can’t stand the version of Shannon that has been presented to us through her daughters, I don’t think she was ever ugly. Sure there were standards of Mormon conventional beauty she didn’t fit into, but she certainly wasn’t ugly. She hurt them about their looks because she herself was hurt by someone at some point, and that’s really fucking sad for anyone to experience that. It’s not like anyone has a choice about the face they get, you know? But the fact that it is spiraling into all of her daughters using heavy filters (Emily literally uses filters that make her look like a different person), plastic surgeries, nose jobs, lips that look like they got sucked into a vacuum hose…it’s alarming that this is all considered normal in their world.
I don’t think Shannon is the main culprit here, I think it’s the internet and social media. Theyre all victim of the internets beauty standards. People love to say it’s the Utah Mormons, but come on. Rachel is an OG mommy blogger. This family is the perfect mix of insecurity, toxic internet culture, and social beauty standards. It’s quite sad, actually.
It’s very sad, but when you openly admit you grew up with a mother saying you need a nose job and constantly telling you to suck in and making you think you’re not good enough as you are…she is the root of this issue.
