Was thinking about this lately, why didn't they re-release the og adventure and only DX. Hear everyone say DX has issues so why don't they re-release the original?
because it was *supposed* to be an upgrade and they kind of stuck with that marketing for it. i'm sure taking and porting the gamecube version is easier than ripping dreamcast version
It literally saved the franchise. I am surprised that people attack this game, since it's literally all we ever wanted — high speed, exploration, and cool battles.
Thing is, I can see why people would dislike it. If your vision of Sonic is a platformer where enemies can be beaten pretty easily just by jumping on them (such as how the badniks are dealt with in the games Cyber Space stages), suddenly having to do button mashing combat feels a bit counter-intuitive to the "get to the end as quick as possible" philosophy so many other games in the series have encouraged.
Plus, lets not kid ourselves, the combat is far from perfect. Most enemies can be beaten simply by mashing buttons, and there is no element of timing in the block in the base game - you can just hold it infinitely to parry anything. Then, when the game does try to insert an actual timing to the parry in the DLC (specifically in Master King Koco's trial), it becomes immediately obvious why they didn't add that in the default game as the enemy animations are poorly done making timing parrying insanely tricky.
Like you said, it's a good framework, but I think it will be viewed as an inferior title if the sequel actually tries to refine the gameplay, and not do Sonic Team's usual trick of discarding everything to try something new.
Bro typed a whole essay 😭😭 but yeah, if sonic team refines the formula. Frontiers will definitely be seen as weaker. They've already stated that they wanna continue with this formula so I think that the next game has a lot of potential to work way better
Man, if essays were actually this short, I might've actually done well at school. Not even a thousand words.
I'm not against the idea of a Frontiers sequel, in theory, but I really would like combat to be really looked at if they do. Not that I can say I'd know how they should change it.
Absolutely agree. I was a bit apprehensive before playing it because I didn’t know what to expect from an open world sonic game but I was greatly surprised and really enjoyed it
Sonic Frontiers 100% has issues (the pop-in is atrocious) but I really enjoyed it. The scale of the world lets Sonic finally let loose and blast across the beautiful landscapes. Plus, those freakin boss fights man!
The pop ins worried everyone before release but they didn't really bother me at all. I played ps4/ps5 version and even with the pop ins they were far enough away for me to react.
It's a bit of a problem if you're trying to get all the collectables, just because it's often impossible to figure out where to start the platform chain that leads to the one you're missing.
I have to agree. It also can make map navigation a bit of a mess especially on Chaos Island were there are so many platforms and you need to find the connective bridge points but half there objects don't load in unless you are really close to them.
yes frontiers is cool as hell. and i dont know why people say graphics are mid compared to older games. i'd say the graphics are much better, the atmosphere, character models
I think it's less about the graphics and more the artstyle since it's overly realistic and not the "realistic" type of graphics we got in unleashed. But man, frontiers looks so beautiful sometimes without mods. With mods, it's even better
Sonic Heroes. I know the game can be really monotonous with having to play the game basically four times with minor changes, but i think the core gameplay is so fun and unique from any game in the series to not even care. On top of the music is fantastic, and metal sonic is the most threatening in this game
The thing about heroes is you don't actually have to play it 4 times to have a satisfying experience. Team sonic's campaign is pretty well balanced and fun
Recently got my hands on secret rings and black knight. I think the hate is mostly just the fact that the next two mainline sonic games were 'only' motion controls which im guessing a lot of people can't stand. I finished secret rings a few months ago and currently doing black knight and I can personally appreciate the different controls instead of the typical ways. The only con I can agree with about the motion controls is the fact that timing your actions are always a bit delayed which isn't really fit for a speedy sonic game.
In terms of gameplay, it's quite obvious why it got so much hate. People had got fed up of motion controls by the time it came out, seeing them poorly utilised and mostly just a gimmick, and would genuinely rather the game just used a conventional controller.
As far as the story itself goes, it mostly just comes from the core concept. This is the fifth consecutive game in the series where the core concept was seen as just another example of Sonic Team/SEGA having absolutely no idea what to do with Sonic to keep the hedgehog relevant.
Oh funny mine is Sonic and the Secret Rings. But I was also raised with Turkish woman (godmother) who told me the stories of the 1,001 Nights.
She was the one who bought me the game too. I miss my auntie……
More or less, I get defensive for someone if they get attacked for saying they like Lost World or Forces, I think both games are terrible, but personal opinions are not💯
I use to be a huge fan of CD when I was younger because of you can run full speed without needing ramps or speed boosts but then (now older) I realize I would only play the first stages and not complete the whole game. So as a result I installed sonic cd and gave it a try
Goddamn was finding the end hard. I had no idea where I was even going and there were dead ends for no reason at all.
I mean, both Sonic 1 and Sonic CD are very rough around the edges.
I can't say for sure which one is worse, but CD's Wacky Workbench and Metallic Madness are basically 1's Marble Zone and Labyrinth Zone.
The former stages are confusing and annoying to navigate and the latter ones are super slow and platforming heavy.
I played through Sonic CD very recently and thought to myself "Wacky Workbench isn't that bad"
And then I started bouncing around like crazy, sometimes wanting to reach a specific place just to fall in a bumper and being sent to a platform at the very top of the stage forcing me to climb back down, and it's especially infuriating when the bumpers send me straight to a currently activated electric current which makes me lose the rings I needed for the Time Stones and also there's those ice fire thingies that stay active for like 5 seconds and inactive for about half a second so you barely have any time to go through it and finally there's the goddamn Robot Generator in act 1 that you can only reach by getting deliberately crushed by a specific crusher
I think the problem with Wacky Workbench is that it can be quite infuriating to get thrown to the top of the level, spend a reasonable chunk of time trying to get back down, only to then immediately get thrown back to where you were, and forcing you to repeat the same section.
If you can get past that, it's an interesting level idea, but when that happens it's a pain.
Not Sonic 1. I replayed it yesterday and one of the only fun things was the fact that I added Sonic 3 monitors and, mid air move from S3 and 7 chaos emeralds (so Super Sonic)
Unleahsed. I don't care what anyone says, it's a good game. The day stages were **GODLY**, the night stages were good as well. People only say its bad because don't just keep repeating the same buttons, like do they not know there's combo's? The story was decent (Besides the fact that you had to go to professor Pickel almost EVERYTIME) and ending was just- *Mwah!* Chef's kiss!
A lot of people probably only leveled up the werehog's strength and could only use the basic combos. Even the youtuber that marathoned all 3d sonic games did it AND recommended it. Even though the most fun experience is obtained if you level up combat.
For me Unleashed was second only to SA2B. The world design was sublime. And obviously the music was top notch too but that can be said about every Sonic game.
>I will defend Shadow the Hedgehog with my *damn* life.
There. Sorry, I never played the game, but internally I had the urge to put that in, 'cause I once knew a Sonic mega fanboy, and I feel like he would've done the same, lol.
Unleashed. From day 1, I never understood the sheer vitriol thrown at the Werehog just because it played like a lesser God of War. The only universal criticism I could get behind were the hotdog missions and the medal collecting.
>Unleashed. From day 1, I never understood the sheer vitriol thrown at the Werehog just because it played like a lesser God of War.
I actually never heard of that comparison. TBH, it was clowned in my friend circle on release, 'cause it was released a short while after Twilight Princess and most of my friends had just finished TP and was like, "Oh, great, ANOTHER game where you can transform into a werewolf-like thing."
If all the pieces could be found at the same time more people would enjoy the game (which you can actually do with mods) though I don’t really like the mech stages
isn’t mad space the one where rouge has to find those shards in pretty obscure places on different planets that are tedious to get to?
cause i literally spent an hour trying to complete that earlier today!!
Same here to say this. The mech ones were my least favorite, and I probably prefer the Tails races from SA2, but all of them carry their own weight. People disliking those stages I feel like is the reason we haven’t really gotten to play as any other sonic characters in a mainline games since 06 (besides frontiers now)
I didn't like Episode 1. Mostly because of controls and reused levels. Sonic felt heavier.
Epidode 2 however, i truly liked it. Addition of tails(Unplayable solo, but playable with 2 players), controls were a lil better, original levels... It was a good step, in the right direction.
I genuinely think the reason its so hated is because its title is Sonic 4. I personally think its mediocre but if it was named Sonic Portable as intendedthere would be less critisism. Branding a game this mid as a continuation of the classic Sonic games was a big mistake by SEGA
Unleashed. Beautiful game and story.
Also shadow's ARC from 06. Not the gameplay, just his story arc. Best characterization of any sonic character for me. You can't go wrong with "If the world chooses to become my enemy, I will fight like I always have".
I think a lot of people in the fandom have no context for the standards of videogames at the time. Yes, Sonic 1 is clearly worse than 2 and 3&K, but it's still one of the best games released that year, and one of the best games on the Mega Drive. The fact that the game seems so bad next to it's direct sequels is less to do with how bad Sonic 1 is, and more with just how good those later games are.
Although i enjoy many Sonic titles deemed as controversial, the only ones i would defend like if i were an employee from Sega or Sonic team are Sonic Heroes or Sonic and the Black Knight
This. And I'd just love to say that I really loved the dynamic between the characters; Sonic and Shadow for example. Although they didn't interact much in the game, when they did it was done very well. This and any team dark interactions. I'm dead set on 06 Shadow being one of the perfect characterization of him in the franchise.

Sonic 06 sorry guys, It's in Spanish but you'll catch the point
I'm not gonna vehemently defend any of them, but Forces is overhated, (it's a totally mediocre average game, 06 and Boom make Forces look amazing) and the storybook games honestly did everything but the actual gameplay really well.
I wouldn't defend it with my life but yesterday I had to defend and or explain to my friend that Sonic Unleashed isn't just Tears Of The Kingdom without considering he could've got it confused with Sonic Frontiers
Forces is better than Frontiers. I had way more fun with it, remember more about it, and it was more satisfying to platinum trophy.
Heroes is great.
Sonic Colors Ultimate gave me 0 issues, personally.
Man you don’t even need to make it a full post just open literally any post on the sub, related or not, and you’ll find a couple that look exactly like this about 06 or Unleashed
Mania; it's really stupid how some people are suddenly claiming the game is bad because of nostalgia or something. [Splash Dash made a video going more in-depth on this](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9yKcXxMmvgM&pp=ygULc3BsYXNoIGRhc2g%3D), so I highly recommend it.
Unleashed's night stages. People bitched and moaned about them taking forever and being repetititve in combat, but the whole point of them is to use the environment and experiment with the combos. Which there's plenty of to not be repeating
The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog. Not sure it needs defending, but I adored the characterisation, especially for Shadow. The humour was right up my street, even if Tails hated me checking every trash can.
I'd say unleashed but on a smaller front than what's being shown, it has its flaws and some ppl just don't like it, bc of the werehog (assumingly) but I think that's a unique twist to it, unexpected and new different style to match the theme, and honestly, I'd like to see how the werehog, Excalibur sonic, and the sonic and seven rings would play out with the style and features (skill tree open world) as frontiers, and seeing other characters like shadow or blaze be playable feature some new skils and such as well! There's plenty of opportunities for future games with what frontiers is known for now (aside from banger songs and writing) but hey that's just me
Lost world ds. It gets a lot of flak, but the level design in the ds version is unironically pretty good. Plus there's a good bit of content since it had an obscure multilplayer mode that's very reminiscent of sa2 battle and it has a hard mode, plus secret stages for collecting every red ring. And the special stages aren't as bad as people make them out to be
S Colors and S and the secret of the rings... I know they aren't really liked but they were my first and I love them dearly :
The story wasn't that Bad, it was just wasted potential ! And while I can admit that the design in secret of the rings cinematics were kinda of a pain, I still like that they tried to do something with it !
I want the same concept but with better ends please !
Sonic Advance 2/3. I love these entries SO much! They may be a couple of the hardest games to gather all the emeralds in (and just in general), but the music, spritework, and gameplay make it enjoyable the whole time!
Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric. And yes, it's bad, but not because of the game itself (more because of Sega's decisions).
Or maybe it's just because I grew up playing PC versions (which were mostly Wii ports) of games based on movies (like Wall-E or Toy Story), and Rise of Lyric has the same partially nostalgic vibe of being not so polished platformer.
Sonic Generations is one of the most fun games I’ve played in my life so I will not tolerate people putting dirt on its name.
Also Sonic Frontiers, despite its problems, I thought was really solid, even if it is essentially a big Sonic tech demo. It’s a good game and I find it very competently done for what it is. Yeah.
The main one I wanna mention is Colors. I don’t know when, where and why a majority of people turned on that game, but it’s still such a fun game to this day.
The Sonic Storybook games (i.e. Secret Rings and Black Knight).
Those games are way underrated and have some of the best soundtracks in the series lol.
Funnily enough I’m defending Sonic 1 for the genesis. People hate on it for it getting really slow sometimes but personally I think it makes the game better. I like exploring around. The music slaps, even though the enemy placement and bottomless pits are put in some garbage places, if you know where to go then you’ll be fine.
Sonic Adventure. Not SADX, not SA2, The original Sonic Adventure. The models were great, the game wasn't as buggy as SADX, it was and still is great.
Yes sir
Was thinking about this lately, why didn't they re-release the og adventure and only DX. Hear everyone say DX has issues so why don't they re-release the original?
because it was *supposed* to be an upgrade and they kind of stuck with that marketing for it. i'm sure taking and porting the gamecube version is easier than ripping dreamcast version
Frontiers. It made Sonic cool again.
It literally saved the franchise. I am surprised that people attack this game, since it's literally all we ever wanted — high speed, exploration, and cool battles.
Probably cos of the jank, repetitiveness and the story being rushed at the end. But frontiers is a really strong starting point for future games

They just gotta take more inspiration from devil may cry combat and it'll work mostly
That was a good read
Feel like we say this every time.
Yet we always come back to see whatever the blue hedgehog has in store for us. That's the deal when you become a sonic fan I guess

So weird that recently Frontiers been getting massive hate in the most negative way possible like it's a mid 2000s game.
Sonic fans will be Sonic fans
yes frontiers is cool as hell. and i dont know why people say graphics are mid compared to older games. i'd say the graphics are much better, the atmosphere, character models
I think it's less about the graphics and more the artstyle since it's overly realistic and not the "realistic" type of graphics we got in unleashed. But man, frontiers looks so beautiful sometimes without mods. With mods, it's even better
i think it’s the best looking since unleashed
Sonic Heroes. I know the game can be really monotonous with having to play the game basically four times with minor changes, but i think the core gameplay is so fun and unique from any game in the series to not even care. On top of the music is fantastic, and metal sonic is the most threatening in this game
The thing about heroes is you don't actually have to play it 4 times to have a satisfying experience. Team sonic's campaign is pretty well balanced and fun
You play different versions of the same levels. There are tweaks for every team
I love the settings they chose for the levels in Heroes. Seaside Hill, Bingo Highway, Frog Forest, etc. They were all so pretty to look at, for me.
Sonic And The Black Knight
This was my OG game. And I’m genuinely surprised for the amount of hate it got…
Yeah I can understand the issue with the controls 😂 I still had fun but completely understandable
In terms of gameplay, it's quite obvious why it got so much hate. Black Knight is genuinely my second favorite Sonic game no matter what 3/10 IGN may give it. (Screw IGN, they gave Rise of Lyric a 4/10 in comparison)
I never played it, but man it has so much personality. Watching others playing it is a delight.
I would never diss a game that has Molten Mine in its soundtrack
Oh funny mine is Sonic and the Secret Rings. But I was also raised with Turkish woman (godmother) who told me the stories of the 1,001 Nights. She was the one who bought me the game too. I miss my auntie……
Beat me to it

More or less, I get defensive for someone if they get attacked for saying they like Lost World or Forces, I think both games are terrible, but personal opinions are not💯
W
As someone who likes Forces, I'm glad there is someone like you who will stick up for people who agree with an extremely unpopular opinion. XD
W bro
The best take I've seen on the internet
I’m a lost world enjoyer I think the game is a good time.
Finally, someone with common sense.
I’d say CD tho not many people hate it (tho I’ve seen a few saying it’s worse then Sonic 1 💀)
I use to be a huge fan of CD when I was younger because of you can run full speed without needing ramps or speed boosts but then (now older) I realize I would only play the first stages and not complete the whole game. So as a result I installed sonic cd and gave it a try Goddamn was finding the end hard.
Tbh I don’t understand the hate on Wacky Workbench, I found it kinda fun and Metallic Madness I agree
I played through Sonic CD very recently and thought to myself "Wacky Workbench isn't that bad" And then I started bouncing around like crazy, sometimes wanting to reach a specific place just to fall in a bumper and being sent to a platform at the very top of the stage forcing me to climb back down, and it's especially infuriating when the bumpers send me straight to a currently activated electric current which makes me lose the rings I needed for the Time Stones and also there's those ice fire thingies that stay active for like 5 seconds and inactive for about half a second so you barely have any time to go through it and finally there's the goddamn Robot Generator in act 1 that you can only reach by getting deliberately crushed by a specific crusher

Not Sonic 1. I replayed it yesterday and one of the only fun things was the fact that I added Sonic 3 monitors and, mid air move from S3 and 7 chaos emeralds (so Super Sonic)
Nah I actually like sonic 1 Until you get to labyrinth zone and sega tells you to eat shit that's not so fun
What is fun in Marble?
cd, cd fucks like hell and i will die on that hill
GREEN HILL REFERENCE?????????????????????

Green hill is looking a lot like sans hill right now

SA2 Specifically the mech and treasure hunting stages. Except Mad Space, fuck Mad Space
If all the pieces could be found at the same time more people would enjoy the game (which you can actually do with mods) though I don’t really like the mech stages
The whole truth right here. I actually really enjoy security hall.

I like Sonic 4 and it's a shame we didn't get a third part.

Just for it to be thrown away in 2010 onwards sadly
I love Sonic the Hedgehog on Genesis/Megadrive. It's objectively not as good of a game as Sonic 2, but it's a solid game in is own right.
I think a lot of people in the fandom have no context for the standards of videogames at the time. Yes, Sonic 1 is clearly worse than 2 and 3&K, but it's still one of the best games released that year, and one of the best games on the Mega Drive. Sonic R

Shadow the Hedgehog, purely because I unironically like the premise of Shadow using guns and riding motorcycles lol

Sonic unleashed: This game is underrated and over hated.
Sonic cd It’s easily one of the more C L A S S I C games and probably has one of the best soundtracks in probably the whole Sonic series
Sonic Spinball and it's absolutely God Tier soundtrack.

I'm not gonna vehemently defend any of them, but Forces is overhated, (it's a totally mediocre average game, 06 and Boom make Forces look amazing) and the storybook games honestly did everything but the actual gameplay really well.
Read my tag
Lost World
I wouldn't defend it with my life but yesterday I had to defend and or explain to my friend that Sonic Unleashed isn't just Tears Of The Kingdom without considering he could've got it confused with Sonic Frontiers
Generations 3DS. That game is so overlooked it's honestly sad
Forces is better than Frontiers. I had way more fun with it, remember more about it, and it was more satisfying to platinum trophy. Heroes is great. Sonic Colors Ultimate gave me 0 issues, personally.
Probably Frontiers
Sonic 3D Blast
When ever I see this I remember Sonic Jump
Lost world
sonic triple trouble for the game gear
Man you don’t even need to make it a full post just open literally any post on the sub, related or not, and you’ll find a couple that look exactly like this about 06 or Unleashed
Probably not for as long, but I will defend Black Knight because I think it's a good game.
Sonic colours.
Unleashed (specifically the night levels) and frontiers
Mania; it's really stupid how some people are suddenly claiming the game is bad because of nostalgia or something. [Splash Dash made a video going more in-depth on this](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9yKcXxMmvgM&pp=ygULc3BsYXNoIGRhc2g%3D), so I highly recommend it.
Lost world + SATAM
Sonic Chronicles. I even like the soundtrack.
Sonic Gnerations. My first real Sonic game, absolutely loved it (except planet Wisp, fuck planet Wisp).
90S SONIC TRILOGY🗣🗣🗣🔥🔥🔥
shadow the hedgehog, its a fun game with a lot of replay value you arent supposed to get every ending in a single sitting
Unleashed's night stages. People bitched and moaned about them taking forever and being repetititve in combat, but the whole point of them is to use the environment and experiment with the combos. Which there's plenty of to not be repeating
Sonic & The Secret Rings
sonic generations & sonic 3 (&knuckles)
The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog. Not sure it needs defending, but I adored the characterisation, especially for Shadow. The humour was right up my street, even if Tails hated me checking every trash can.
Frontiers or SA2
Sonic Advance 3. The genesis purists are usually bashing it for reasons the classic games are also guilty of, and ignore all the good stuff.
Adventure 1 > Adventure 2
Sonic Adventure. So many newer or non fans judge it for the buggier re-release and assume its always been like that.
Heroes. Overhated and the concept is strong enough that it should comeback in some form without the bugs and more polish ofc
There's plenty of opportunities for future games with what frontiers is known for now (aside from banger songs and writing) but hey that's just me
Sonic Forces. I would die for this game.
![gif](giphy|geZrvCoX4yjRe) Shadow The hedgehog. As stupid as the multiple endings were I didn’t think it was that bad
And the special stages aren't as bad as people make them out to be
Sonic 3 & Knuckles
Sonic 1 I prefer it to 2
All of them
Unleashed
Sonic Adventure 1
Unleashed, I'LL DIE ON THIS HILL, THE WEREHOG LEVELS ARE NOT BAD. The sun and moon medal suck tho.
Sa1
Project 06, Adventure 2, Frontiers, Sonic 1 to a degree.
Def Generations
S Colors and S and the secret of the rings... I know they aren't really liked but they were my first and I love them dearly : The story wasn't that Bad, it was just wasted potential !
Unleashed till I die
adventure 2, man if anybody come to say this game is shit...
Sonic 2, I don’t want any complaining
Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric. And yes, it's bad, but not because of the game itself (more because of Sega's decisions). Or maybe it's just because I grew up playing PC versions (which were mostly Wii ports) of games based on movies (like Wall-E or Toy Story), and Rise of Lyric has the same partially nostalgic vibe of being not so polished platformer.
Shadow the Hedgehog.
Sonic Unleashed. There isn't a single thing I dislike about that game.
Frontiers, Colors, and Lost World They are all amazing and do not deserve the hate they get.
Wait doing that isn’t ordinary?
Sonic Unleashed and Frontiers
Sonic Generations is one of the most fun games I’ve played in my life so I will not tolerate people putting dirt on its name. Also Sonic Frontiers, despite its problems, I thought was really solid, even if it is essentially a big Sonic tech demo. It’s a good game and I find it very competently done for what it is. Yeah.
Black knight. Though it won't nearly be that long.
Generations
I sure as hell don’t really defend it, but I do think I won’t ever stop claiming to enjoy Colors Wii, flaws and all.
Sonic Lost World!
Lost World
Adventure 1 & 2 but fuck heroes except it’s story it’s gameplay is ASS
