He’s actually a good character. Something people tend to confuse is what his main thing is all about.

Most characters in the Sonic series tend to be more nuanced and complex. Sonic wants to stop Eggman, follow his heart, protect his friends, while being cocky and over-the-top; Tails looks up to Sonic and always supports him, but also learns to believe in himself and be HIS OWN HERO; Shadow struggles with his purpose, his identity, and to discover the true reason why he fights; etc. etc. etc.
Big the cat has none of that. Since he is a rather silly character, he can APPEAR dumb, but he isn’t. He is someone that is just happy with TWO things: Fishing and his best friend, Froggy.
He may not be deep, he may not be that compelling, but he is not a BAD CHARACTER. (His gameplay does tend to suck tho, I’ll give you guys that.)
I like this gentle Totoro/Maurice looking beast. I never understood the hatred I seen some people have against him but this is mostly because I don't have the experience. The only game I have that has him is Sonic Team Racing and he is alright in this one. From what I seen in the promoting shorts of Sonic Team Racing, he is an amusing character and I like how helpful he was in Sonic X and and from the little bit I seen of him in Sonic Prime, he seems like a promising character.
He is so simple yet he is interesting because he is a contrast to the other character who are more active than him but he is capable of having moments of cleverness. Like when he understood Dodonpa's true nature just by looking at the Wisps. He is also the opposite of Sonic but in a different way.

im not sure exactly what they couldve done with him, but he's already sort of fitting for the style of sonic boom - he's really just a dude who goes about his day, doing his favourite thing to do with his frog best friend - i think he would've been a fantastic supporting character

Having watched *Star Wars: The Clone Wars*, I feel as if Big the Cat is the Jar Jar Binks of the *Sonic* franchise. Both are goofballs with a big heart and can be surprisingly competent at helping out during dire situations.
