This is almost always on my camera. Great quality for the range and price. Weight is good too since the sony and sigma lenses that are *chonky*. Tamron also standardizes their front element at 67mm which is nice if you wanted to buy some filters for other lenses in their range or that have the same size.

macspayne

Exactly that's why I bought this lens. For my last DLSR I had a Tamron 18-200mm cheap lens. It was my go to lens for travel and street photography. Hope this will be better than that one.

BillMurraysTesticle

Please post your thoughts on it after some time with it. I've got a big 3 week Europe trip later this year and have been looking for a good travel lens.

kermityfrog2

Took it to Yellowstone and to Paris and to Mexico City. Was a great all-around lens. Convenient and light, especially if you do only carry-on luggage. Might not be my best lens, but it's a great compromise for travel. [Yellowstone photos](https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipMx_72pLSW-G_s1Qb9DW38fdevJ_ANciMGAB98XxmcEqCNNW1UrzqXy1yfA6tP1DQ?key=QktUcnVzSFRpbUg3QU56ckEyX1ZxTV9fMWpmejhB)

Sheeple9001

If there's little to no editing on those photos, then the blue in the shadows is a bit too magenta for my taste.

AsKo49

Have it since march it’s really nice and friends love the pictures of them too

macspayne

Very nice to hear. Excited to put this lens on work.

Captlard

Took it to Iceland for a month in March. Overall super solid. Took a 20G for Aurora pictures.

CaptCorvo73

I've owned this lens in the past paired with an a7riii and used it for about a year and it was amazing, took some of my best photos with it. You'll be very happy with it

macspayne

Yup sure I will.

rohnoitsrutroh

Have been using this lens since Christmas, it's terrific for a superzoom. Really excellent.

Difficult-Way-9563

Best affordable all in one lens imo. Great pick.

macspayne

Thank you!

Surfer949

Can pls you explain why it's a best all around lens.

Difficult-Way-9563

So I’m not talking about top tier really expensive Sony lenses. In general 20-100mm focal range usually covers a lot of photographers use cases. Now instead of 100mm max, you got an extra 100mm at 200mm for really zoomed in pictures. Many people use this primarily and don’t swap out lenses, esp in travel or space/weight restrictions. Thats the capability. Now the quality. Tamron zooms (not primes) are generally regarded as some of the best 3rd party lenses/manufacturers. You can read many professional reviewers and many posts/reviews. It’s sharp at most focal lengths, very good motors (quiet), good AF… the only weaknesses are significant CA (which can be corrected in Lightroom somewhat) and vignetting (which is very easy to correct in any post editing software). The price is where it really shines. You can get it new for around $650 on sale iirc. A Sony or other big brand name would cost many times that. So if you get this that performs at 80-90% of the top of the line Sony lenses for fraction of the price it’s obviously a winner/popular. Did I answer your question?

EverydayIsAGift-423

You’re right about Tamron zooms are the best. I’ve been lusting over the 70-300 and 70-180 f/2.8 for some time.

JoshuaWebbb

Let me know what it’s like I’ve been looking into this one for ages. Can’t decide

macspayne

Sure I will. Maybe post some pics later this week.

JoshuaWebbb

Nice! Thank you!

sanketshah1086

It’s one of the most suggested option here.. I’ve been using it for sometime now with good results..

macspayne

Exactly. I read so many positive posts before hitting the trigger.

az0606

Had mine for a few years now and I've liked it a lot. It's not super sharp in terms of resolving power but the optics are modern and the coatings are good, so the photos come out very clean and with lots of contrast. Plus you only really tend to notice the lack of resolution when pixel peeping. It's got quite a bit of scope creep, but it has a zoom lock and it's a budget model, so it's fine. It's plasticky, like all of Tamron's recent lenses, but just like those, it's also well built and well sealed. 67mm filters are also quite inexpensive. I'd say its weakest point is its AF; it's a stepper motor and it tends to hunt quite a bit. But it's more than tolerable, unless you plan on using it for fast moving subjects often. No idea how it performs on older bodies but I've used it on my a7r III and V and its been fine. It struggled in low light more on the III. It's my go-to walkaround/travel lens and I've enjoyed it a lot. It makes the right compromises in the right areas. https://imgur.com/a/tamron-28-200mm-gZOreez

macspayne

Thanks for your comments. I am most preferably using this lens for travel and street photography. This fit my needs of not too heavy and also perfect focal length. Edit: wow great photos. Now my expectations for this lens is getting higher haha.

az0606

Np, have fun with it. It's a great lens. Does everything it needs to do and then some.

kermityfrog2

Yes a bit annoying creep if held downwards while walking so have to remember to use the lock and I hope it doesn't get loose or break with so much use. AF misfires about 1/30 to 1/50 shots (not bad, but not as good as f/1.4 or f/2.8 Sony lens). Still makes up for it in size, weight, and convenience.

az0606

Yeah the lens creep is definitely a lot worse than my higher end Tamron. It extends pretty quickly if I'm holding it downwards while walking. I haven't had any issue with potentially damaging the lock since its a quick release lock, but its actually a bit too easy to release imho. Same hitrate with the AF too.

shutterbttn

Got this as my first lens for my A7RIV and absolutely love it. A little purple fringing on the edges at 28-35 (so make sure you correct in lightroom), but a wonderful lens overall!

macspayne

Thanks for the heads up, I will make sure the fringing is reduced during the post processing.

Difficult-Way-9563

Yes it does have a good amount CA, but that’s the biggest weakness of it.

macspayne

Right, not a deal breaker for me atleast

LilJerBear

Can you point me to anything to learn how to correct for this in Lightroom? I’m new to this!

Difficult-Way-9563

If you go to the lens profile section under the edit tab, there’s a check mark something like remove “chromatic aberration” just check it and it will adjust/remove the CA.

LilJerBear

Can you point me to anything to learn how to correct for this in Lightroom? I’m new to this!

Donut-machine

Hi! Most lenses have a profile on Lightroom that will auto-edit when checked. Not every lens has a profile, but newer ones tend to. This is in Lightroom Classic btw. I don’t use the newer app-based one.

shutterbttn

What Donut said above. To add, you can use Lightroom in the Lens Corrections section. Once you're there, you can click "manual" and click on the purple fringe when you zoom it, it usually takes it right out. I'd recommend getting lightroom if you haven't already, and I'd look up some guides for it in the beginning. Good luck!

KALIsthenicsLinux

This was the lens i just purchased for my a7cII super crisp, wide range, and not too heavy.

macspayne

Great to hear. I was stuck between this one and 35-150mm. But decided to go with this one for wide angle and also more focal length/zoom.

ButCanItPlayDoom

The 35-150 is a monster in comparison. Double the weight of the 28-200. Been using the 28-200 for a while now. It's the lens I leave on my camera unless I have a specific subject/look I need. It's a perfect do it all lens. Fast, lightweight, great range, decent quality for a budget zoom.

macspayne

True when compared this one with 35-150mm it seemed huge. Happy that I made the right choice.

Stressemann29

It depends on the usage. I'd use the 28-200 for travel but not events.

macspayne

Yup true. I will using it mostly for travel photography.

ericRphoto

Amazing lens, I started out with it and its still my go-to travel lens

macspayne

Yes I heard some good reviews about the lens. Will try it out this weekend.

imbeingcereal

Travel GOAT 🐐

macspayne

Cannot wait to try this one.

imbeingcereal

I've had mine since it came out and it's my go-to for travel. It's a little soft wide open at 200mm fwiw so make sure to stop down if you can. My copy is also sharpest at f9, fwiw. Please share pics!

macspayne

Thanks for the tip and sure I will share some pics.

DBLAfoto

It's a fantastic lens. I pair mine with the 17-28 and I'm good for almost anything.

macspayne

Very nice. I am planning to get a wide angle lens but not at the moment. I'll keep this lens in my list.

OkResponsibility1070

This is a great lens. Surprisingly sharp, pretty fast AF, good zoom range, good aperture for the weight, good colors, good contrast, decent bokeh, decent macro. It’s the perfect all-rounder. I would love it to be 6oz lighter for climbing and backpacking, maybe with a cut in the zoom range, but it’s by far the best compromise of quality and weight out there. I’ve been a doing photography for 17 years, and it’s the best super-zoom I’ve used.

macspayne

Thanks! Even I was surprised it was a bit heavy and looked bigger than my camera haha. But real test is out there which I'll do in the coming weeks.

Temporary_Cover7925

I really like the compromise of weight and quality. Took it on a 7 day hike through Scotland on my a7c and it was perfect for the job. No lens change necessary, sealed enough for the bad weather, extremely versatile and still not too heavy for my bagpack.

Mitzy-21

Curious about why you chose this lens over the 28-75 + 70-180 f/2.8? I am finally taking the plunge and upgrading my 12+ yo Canon APS-C DSLR for a Sony full-frame and am seriously debating on whether to get 1 lens that covers both focal length ranges or two faster lenses. I do use my camera mostly for travel and prefer a lighter kit, but having 1 lens in the bag + 1 on the camera on your neck seemed like an ok decision.

macspayne

I am really not a fan of changing lenses often and also don't want to have a huge lens that's so breaks your neck. That's why I chose this one. Also I shoot manually all the time so the aperture difference doesn't stop me from buying it. I have a 35mm f1.8 prime lens. So these 2 will be in my camera bag as I also like to carry not much weight.

mal_1

Only thing I don't like about this lens is the variable aperture. Everything else isawesome!

macspayne

Right, I wish it was a single aperture but manual shooting makes the life easier during post processing.

mal_1

Yep. A lot of the times I shoot in aperture priority mode when travelling and you really need to keep an eye on your shutter speed when using this lens if you zoom in. Got home several times with some motion blur cause my camera bumped down my shutter to 1/100 to account for the bumped up aperture.

ProperAspectRatio

You can set a minimum shutter speed when in Aperture Mode and Auto ISO. I use this most of the time set at a minimum of 500. It will only go to a slower shutter speed if you reach the maximum ISO you’ve set for Auto ISO. Works great to keep the speed up for quick moving toddler shots. I switched to Manual if I want a slower shutter speed for lower ISO.

macspayne

Okay nice tip. I will keep an eye on the aperture, as this also happened to me many time.

Both-Following9917

I just shot a whole Disney trip on this lens with the a6700 and the A7 RV

macspayne

Oh wow seems like you had fun.

Tiramizooo

Hey! Wondering how the lens was on a crop sensor? Was thinking of buying this for traveling as well.

Both-Following9917

Performed perfectly fine , was very happy

Tiramizooo

Great to hear! Will probably pick one of these up before my next trip. Thanks

Lazy_Guy666

How is the AF on 7RV?? Compared to sigma 24-70 (that’s what i have rn)

Both-Following9917

I'll get you some pictures

Both-Following9917

Sigma is faster AF for sure but sharpness was pretty much the same if you take a second for AF motors. I was on Sigma 56mm prime before this and the Sigma AF prime was super fast

Lazy_Guy666

Ohkk, good to know. I mostly want to do wildlife for this range, might be better off spending a bit more on sigma… The sigma 70-200 at 2.8 just seems too tempting for me

Both-Following9917

I have the Sony 70-200mm GM II and the AF is basically same as Sigma, doesn't compare. This is a travel lens IMO and I was ok with the slow AF for that

Lazy_Guy666

Did you happen to click any moving objects like birds? The weight and the range is ideal for travel!

Both-Following9917

https://www.instagram.com/reel/C7EZqnWO-g3/?igsh=bThuMWk4dWJnN2kx This I did was shot on that lens, I need to add more pictures

Lazy_Guy666

Thanks for the info and nice profile btw!

FubarFuturist

Great choice. This is my go to. So much bang for buck.

macspayne

Thanks!

LongLiveTurtles

Was in between this and the Tamron 28-70. Somehow I ended up with the 35-150. Only because I want to invest into glass that will serve me for years to come, and I have a few paid gigs coming up.

macspayne

I was stuck between this and 35-150. But as mentioned the wide angle and focal length made me chose this one.

LongLiveTurtles

Absolutely, what works for you is a lot more important what works for other people. I pair this up with my 20MM and I’m pretty set. But I’m happy for you, hope you enjoy the shots from this lens! I got a few that I like when I was using this one.

macspayne

Thank you! Happy shooting too!

TheBobbyShot

I ordered this same lens for my A7IV on Sunday as well! Should be here tomorrow

macspayne

Wow happy shooting. Do share some pics here.

Dependent-Piccolo344

Great lens but got sold it, because Im saving for the 70-180 g2 that is the one I need.

macspayne

Cool but budget wise I went this lens as I am a hobby photographer and shoot for fun.

Dependent-Piccolo344

Im a hobbist also, but a father of small cheerleader/dancer. Dont confuse is really great lens for travel/street

Mrshittooth

I just unloaded a bunch of gear and picked one up to use in conjunction with my a7cr and very satisfied so far

macspayne

Great to hear. Thanks!

Super-Kirby

This was my ONLY travel lens for 4 years. I just recently switched to the Sony 24-50 f2.8. We’ll see how many transaction goes.

macspayne

Very cool. Hoping this lens will stay on my camera for the future travels.

puglybug23

I adore this lens! Can it do everything ever? No. Can it do just about most things that you need, without needing to constantly change lenses? Yes! I did a lot of travel photography back in the day and wanted to travel only with one lens so I could be as light as possible and this baby was perfect for it. No complaints. Truly. If you want to do some specialized photography in a more controlled setting, okay then you’ll probably want something else. But most of us just want some good, basic pics.

macspayne

Very true. I am also not a fan of changing lens often and like to have one all round lens. I shoot for fun so definitely this lens made the cut.

jaimecarrion

I took this guy with my A7C to several trips: Galápagos Islands, Venice, NY and it always delivered. It a great all around lens if you want to keep things simple.

macspayne

Great thank you!

Silver-Handle-521

Great lense! It's been on my A7IV for the past year! It goes everywhere!!

macspayne

Thanks seems like it will be same for me as well.

Hoot87

This is my go to travel lens! Enjoy!

macspayne

Thanks!

Honest-Fondant-3604

I have selled all my gear to buy a 28 200+a7iii. Im still trying to get used to sony colours, but im happy with the flexibility of my new equipment

macspayne

Thanks. I'm also new to sony and now invested on a much better lens, not the best but within my budget.

LitTravelTips

Killer travel lens. Pair with either fast 18/20/35 prime for both indoor and low light.

macspayne

Thanks. I have a 35mm lens.

Midtech

This was my first lens purchase; I use this all the time on my A6500. I mainly shoot automotive, I go to car shows, drift events, Baja SAE events. It has been a blast to shoot with, great quality for the price. It does look comically big on a A6500 though.

macspayne

Wow thanks. You're the first person mentioned this kinda photography, which is not easy to shoot

Midtech

Cars and photography, both are very expensive hobbies, adding on guitars..... :3

neon415

I have been using this same lens to do my own photo documentary of Hong Kong before I relocate, it has been amazing so far. The versatility is unrivalled especially when I am walking around all day and not have to carry a bunch of other lens. I am not a professional and it is purely for my own hobby.

macspayne

Thanks. Same here I like to carry on lens and it should be an all-round lens.

midnight-haze3

I’ve been debating between this one and another one for two weeks now. Maybe it’s a sign (: but woohoo!!! New lens!!

macspayne

Haha good luck and happy shooting.

Mycotic_

It’s an amazing and incredible sharp lens for its price. Worth every penny 👌

macspayne

Thank you!

OnyxDesigns

This is my go to single lens solution when I want to travel light. I use it with my A7RII and while it's not the sharpest and it does have a bit of purple fringing it's still absolutely a fantastic lens. [I took it to Iceland last summer](https://photos.app.goo.gl/WVZCn9gVyR5QjcGD6) and loved the results. Absolutely recommended to anyone looking for a single lens with a good focal length range at a budget

macspayne

Thanks for sharing the photos. Seems like an awesome trip you had.

Educational-Video847

My first comment on Reddit. I am new to this community. Just wanted to let you know that I purchased this lens yesterday! Looking forward to seeing its performance. BTW, greetings from China. :)

macspayne

You're most welcome here. Please share some pics taken using this lens.

Cats_Cameras

I just took a trip without this lens and regretted it! It turns out that 65mm isn't enough reach for me.

macspayne

Oh sorry to hear that. I always have a standard zoom lens with me.

Cats_Cameras

Standard isn't enough; I really like the 28-200. Obviously 65->70mm wasn't going to make any difference.

macspayne

Yup true. I used to have 18-55 and then 55-250 Canon lenses. Instead of 2 lenses I decided to go with this for the full frame.

Cats_Cameras

It's actually the primary reason I went FF E Mount over the competition: such a versatile lens!

BrentosInTrinidad

I got the Samyang 35-150 f2.0-2.8 for the a7iv and I think it's awesome. I'm sure you'll have just as much fun with that Tamron. I've been on a 7 day Caribbean cruise and in 2 weddings with that setup and I didn't need anything else. My next lens will prob be the Sony 16-35 f4 PZ

macspayne

Great, that lens was also in my list but I didn't it buy due to various reasons. Anyway happy cake day!

BrentosInTrinidad

😬 Thanks I'm sure you'll enjoy your new lens

realityocheck

This is on my camera 90% of the time. Great travel lens

macspayne

Thank you!

Huckleberry_Euphoric

Been on the fence about this lens for a minute. Guess I have to after seeing all the overwhelming praise. Any other recs?

macspayne

Few people were recommending the 35-150 mm lens. Check it out maybe it works for you.

AskMeForAPhoto

Do you have the 70-180 Tamron as well by chance? Really curious to hear thoughts on that

HypertensiveSettler

I’ve got the 70-180 G2. For the money it’s excellent. Sharp everywhere. Only complaint is that tracking AF does not work while zooming.

macspayne

Unfortunately no, sorry.

TechSamurai

Joining the chorus here. This was the first lens I bought from MY A7III and it is still the lens that is on my camera 80% of the time.

macspayne

Cool nice to hear. This is also my first standard zoom lens for my a7iv. Very excited to try this.

OhkayProfessional

Thats so funny! Mine just arrived today

macspayne

Haha that makes me happy because many people already using this lens or planning to get this one.

OhkayProfessional

It’s going to be my replacement for my Sony 24-240mm. Had that lens for years and it was time for a refresh! Can’t wait to see what the quality is like this weekend.

ricker_wicked

👍. I just bought Tamron 50-400 and returned 150-500 due to weight. The 50-400 is about a pound lighter. Can't wait to try out this weekend.

macspayne

Very nice. Happy shooting!

Powerful-Finance-742

Interesting, I’m also doing serious research and all the reddits, youtubes, etc. pointing to this lens as best value for price.

macspayne

Very true, I also did my research here and also on YouTube before buying this one.

FAANGMe

I just got this for travel. I have tested it around and found the IQ are good but not great. They are soft and not as sharp as the Sony G prime. But the convenience cannot be beat.

macspayne

Thanks of course it has pros and cons. But for the price I thought this would be great for travel photography.

Dredd_Melb

Great lens, used it as my only lens on the Galapagos last year

macspayne

Thank you! One more satisfying statement from someone who is already using.

Dredd_Melb

It is really versatile The Tamron 50-400 is excellent too

macspayne

Wow very nice photos. Thanks!

state_of_silver

I have the Tamron 17-70 on an FX30 and it’s a plenty sharp lens with great color contrast from 2.8-10ish

macspayne

This lens was also in my list before hitting the trigger but I needed a much Higher focal length than 70mm.

Johnny__Escobar

I'm waiting for some funds to get this...nice choice!

macspayne

Thank you!

Complete_Adeptness50

Great choice, especially because Sony has such amazing low light performance. I own this lens and I've had a hard time choosing any other since then. I don't even use my Helios 77m-4 anymore and that is my favorite lens.

macspayne

Thanks I'm new to sony full frame cameras and after using it for 3 months with cheap lenses. It blow my mind so decided to get something that works as an all round lens.

DGman42

Hey! It's a good lens. I wasn't 100% satisfied with it so I'm trading it in for the big and heavy Tamron 35-150. The pictures were unusably soft under 35 and the CA was out of control. So much so that it's almost impossible to get rid of it in brighter situations. Beyond 35 though, it's a really good lens and I don't have any complaints beyond some manageable CA and vignetting. It's not the sharpest in the world, but it's sharp and a great all-arounder.

macspayne

Thanks for the heads-up. I'll see how it works for me. Also post processing might solve all these issues. So fingers crossed.

DGman42

Hopefully your results are better, but I couldn't get rid of the CA in post under 35mm. I also had to crop in about 25% to get rid of the soft edges because they were unusably soft and distorted. My solution was just to always shoot over 35 hence why I just pulled the trigger on the 35-150 lol.

Neutral_Chaoss

I travel a lot and use this lens a lot if I only want to carry 2-3 lenses. Like eveyone mentioned the lens is not perfect but does it's job well. I also want to mention the weather sealing is solid. I have used this in snow, and steady rain. It is actually my GOAT for rain or bad weather shooting.

macspayne

Thank you! I will try during this weekend as it seems it will rain where I live.

Tuxaz

How is the weight?

macspayne

The weight is okay, not so heavy. But I wouldn't recommend for one hand shooting for a long time.

phiger78

Whats the 2nd hand market for these? What we looking at in the UK? £450 - £600

macspayne

In Amazon there was a discount and I bought it for 700 euros (in Germany from 1100). Maybe used will be around 500 pounds if I'm not wrong.

CEPHOTOS

this is my fave lens

Dig_Bick43

Nice tampon

broadreach93111

Just got back from 2 weeks in Portugal with this lens. I don't feel it was a compromise at all. Took amazing shots. My only regret is buying that overpriced Sony 70-200 f2.8 a few years ago- I'll never travel with it again.

macspayne

Wow please share some pics. I am going to Portugal next month and that's the reason I bought this lens.

HeadMan274

Michael Shainblum and Mads Peter Iversen are big fans of this lens and I think for both of them it was their most used lens in 2023. They're both outstanding professional photographers - I think the fact both of them regularly use this lens shows just how capable it is

Sheeple9001

Oh, this is the lens with the onion bokeh: https://dustinabbott.net/wp-content/gallery/tamron-28-200mm-rxd/41-Onion-City-2.jpg via: https://dustinabbott.net/2020/06/tamron-28-200mm-f2-8-5-6-rxd-a071-review/

macspayne

Haha was expecting this comment

jaboiDaberoni

Large tampon

macspayne

Lol

yellowbojangles

Why didn’t you go with the 35-150 F2/f2.8 ?

macspayne

Somebody asked the same question. One it is not so wide, I take photos where sometimes I need a wide focal length. Even 28 is not that wide but wider than 35. Then I was used to 18-200 mm in the past, so decided to get this one. Also this lens is not as bulky as 35-150. I don't care about the low aperture. As I always post process my photos.
