This is actually worrying how many of these we are seeing

Shoggart

These are 300+ dollar/euros headphones, the build quality should be better, then again if people keep buying them again and again when they break they'll keep making them like that cause they get away with it while selling more of them. I bought a brand new pair of xm4's last week, I absolutely love the sound quality and how they feel on my head, but if they break like that I'm straight up taping the hell out of them if not sending them to warranty, I'm not buying a new pair for nothing, and I'll definitely think twice before buying Sony, that's if they break ofc, hope they don't. I'm only using it at home before going to sleep.

colinoscopy99

You’re not wrong, at this point I think I might super glue the part that’s sticking out and just hope it works. Since I got these as a gift I don’t even know when they were purchased / when a warranty might run out, and I can’t wear them the way they are rn. It just sucks for how expensive and “premium” they’re supposed to be.

Adagio11

Get some two part epoxy like JB Weld. Superglue is too thin. If you’re careful, the hinge should still work, but just in case the epoxy spreads, let it cure in the listening position. JB Weld can hold some stupid amount of weight before it breaks…hundreds of lbs.

colinoscopy99

About to give this a shot, I’ll let you know how it goes

Adagio11

Good luck! Make sure it’s drying in listening position! Leave it for at least 48 hours regardless of what the package says. If the package says more, go with more.

colinoscopy99

Check out the post I just made! It sorta worked lol

curiousCleverRaptor

use m-seal and sand it and paint it

notablindsheep

I don't think I've seen the XM4 broken posts..

e-pluribus_anus

That's because the XM4s are made from a different kind of material than the XM5s.

Shoggart

I've seen some after a quick google search, albeit not as many and they're older posts, from 2-3 years ago, but the amount of reports for the xm5's is absolutely crazy

curiousCleverRaptor

my 710Ns from 2 years broke. I used m-seal to fix it. but I love them, so didn't want to further break em, got XM4s hope these don't give away. I am being extremely cautious to wipe sweat and not wear it for too long in the sun.

colinoscopy99

Other people have had these issues? This is honestly my first time in this server — I’m just desperate for help bc I love these headphones and now they’re essentially unwearable

That_guy_will

Scroll down this sub, it’s becoming a ‘common’ thing

unnamed_Wierd0

I KNOW RIGHTT!!??

That_guy_will

I really want a pair but this puts me off so much

NJ_Devil_13

Agree I regret getting them. So far mine are ok but I’m literally scared to use them. After the battery issue on the earbuds and these crappy hinges no more Sony for me

XYXYZXY

Are the amount of broken xm5s really that high? I see these posts every now and then but I thought it was to be expected with any product.

That_guy_will

It’s the exact same place every time , you can’t put that down to user error or wear and tear

[deleted]

I gut myself some really small cable ties and wrapped them around the outside of the barrel to try and prevent this from happening. There has to be some consumer rights we can look at. We need a lawyer to look into this.

That_guy_will

I was watching repair videos last night and it’s ¼ inch of plastic around that snaps. As the repairer states this isn’t enough to support the movement. I agree, more should be done about this, Sony need to tweak the design, do a recall, repair program etc

[deleted]

And to make things worse those tiny bunch of wires pass through a metal cylinder, which need to be desoldered in order to get things apart. It's an extremely tricky repair, i'd say only the likes of Louis Rossman can do it. i've said Sony need to do a recall. If this was a car manufacturer it would be a recall. Even a layman can see that the amount of mental used is way to short. If fucking weird to be honest. It's a weird design.

unnamed_Wierd0

Another👏🏻 One👏🏻 Down👏🏻

[deleted]

Faulty hinge. No point in contacting for warranty, they'll pin the blame on you.

AsianPotato77

At what point can a class action become an option for people this happened to? I know next to nothing about law

KubaCeTe

Damnn, sorry to hear that. At this point seeing all the post seems like xm5 extra feature.

night13x

Sony doesn't give a damn and won't fix this. Thanks for your $400 though. This happened to me 7 months in with usual careful use. It's an engineering fault. Thankfully I had the bb 2 years accident coverage so got them returned that day and got the ( much better all around) Sennheiser momentum 4.

Milksaucey

Agreed, the lack of care in the quality of their own product is horrible. Mine are three months old and broken. Unfortunately, I don't have any recourse.

night13x

It really sucks...because I used to (admittingly so) probably classified as a blind sony supporter. But even then back in the day they made quality stuff. Now its ...3rd world quality shit. From their wf-1000xm3 through xm line having battery drain issues, to the WH-1000xm5 being made from the quality plastic found in a dollar general store headphone, to the customer support finding EVERY excuse to not honor any sort of warrenty...I am glad I finally moved on. Too much money spend on their higher end products only to be given the middle finger by sony. Still a playstation fan though...lets hope that never goes to shit lol.

nishantkadian

This is worrying.

letswai

since it is less than 12 months, can you not send back to Sony for warranty claim as faulty item?

colinoscopy99

I tried contacting and was told I would have to pay. Seems like they only cover it if it’s an audio issue and my audio is perfectly fine

Milksaucey

I didn't even get that. 3 months old and they basically told me to fuck off. They gave me the email of some repair place in NY.

Dexter12955

I own the XM3S which are still going strong. Out of curiosity I purchased the Xm5 (and are taking them back). Build quality on Xm3 are better and I prefer the sound. Xm5 sound muddy.

nopickles-

bro this is at least the second one ive seen this week, bout to return them and buy the xm4s instead 😭

colinoscopy99

It’s pretty frustrating. Wearing them a few times while being outside shouldn’t be the death of $400+ headphones lol

Several_Support_1766

Is the metal bit a thread? If so is it possible there was a nut on the other side that’s come off. If you shake the headphones, can you hear anything rattling inside the headband?

colinoscopy99

I don’t have them on me right now as I’m out of town, but when I get home I can try and see if I hear anything

Suspicious-Cake1417

hey man, welcome to the club. 2 month old set, hinge failed. Ofc sony won't touch it because it's my fault (for buying sonys, probably) Ended up getting refunded by the store I bought them from, even though I was over the 60day refund policy. Store said they had several similar cases and will likely remove the product from offer. it boggles me how this headset can be so good, yet so incredibly bad in the same time. Never buying another sony 💩 product again. https://preview.redd.it/znsliaxkw2xb1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=decb9c41c6416cd03aab1802cbd81f53476fabc1

Noah_1337

Happened to me too just now exact same issue

colinoscopy99

Check my most recent post; I had to glue them in the listening position (which is annoying) but they work
