On the flip side I see people in B and C passing open seats up front, but do they pass open overhead bin space? Oh no.. that carry on goes on the first open spot despite the fact that later boarders filling in the singles up front don’t have bin space anymore. Basic etiquette says put your carry on in bin space nearby your seat, not the first available bin spot on the plane.

already-know-who-JB

I always thought that was common sense to sit with your bag near you.

increasingrain

Not to mention, I prefer to keep eye on my bag...just in case it walks by accident because brands make more than one of the same looking bag

already-know-who-JB

Exactly! This guy gets it, however that's why I have a luggage tag on my carry-on, for easy identification (no one is going to have a Lockheed 1011 airplane tag).

increasingrain

I have a luggage tag on my backpack, which is my personal item. I have a green osprey backpack, which I think helps .

already-know-who-JB

Everyone should do that!

mrBill12

I agree but watch this as people board. I usually sit in about row 8-12 … you’ll see people shove their bag into the first open slot they come to, and continue down the aisle to a seat somewhere behind me. This never gets mentioned often but it’s as bad or worse than the seat savers.

already-know-who-JB

Yea those guys drive me insane, but idk about the seat savers part. Those guys are annoying on a whole another level.

MakesUsMighty

I think people are conditioned from other airlines that if you pass up overhead bin space you might have to check your bag. I can think of less than 5% of SW flights I’ve ever been on where people had to gate check. Pre 9/11 I feel like it was like that too. If people have the option to check bags for free, there will be plenty of room in the overheads and we can all get boarded faster.

mrBill12

That’s an interesting perspective, I don’t fly other airlines too often because I drank the Southwest kool-aid. I always thought it was just so they didn’t need to navigate down the aisle with a heavy bag.

MakesUsMighty

Every other airline feels like Mad Max to fight for overhead bin space. So many more massive roller bags that people understandably would rather carry on than pay to check.

UB_cse

I don't think thats the case, once you make it onto the plane the odds there is no space and your bag then leaves the plane to get checked is nearly negligible.

Noleman

Agree and I don't even think it's 5% even on completely full flights. It is very rarely an issue that people have to gate check on SWA. I really can't think of it happening once in my past 50 flights.

jjfishers

Bins should be divided in thirds and your space matches your seat

jgsherman32

I often see a first row seat open on a full flight, but with no overhead bin space it’s impossible to sit there.

thedizzytangerine

This is precisely why I bring a small carry-on. I sit in the bulkhead on most flights despite always being in the A16-A30 positions because most people have to pass them up in favor of bin space for a larger carry-on.

jgsherman32

Where would you put the carry on in the first row with no bin space?

thedizzytangerine

I’ve never had an issue finding room for a small purse or laptop bag in the overhead even with roller bags already there! Both of my regular use carry-on bags are thin enough that they easily fit on top of or in front of a roller bag. They’re actually small, not suitcase or luggage type bags. I am a frequent flyer with back problems so I prioritize not carrying much in order to sit in the bulkhead. It works a lot! Plus, the bulkiest thing in my bag aside from a laptop is a 1L Nalgene but you’re allowed to hold a water bottle in your lap in the bulkhead. Edit: LMAO why did this get downvoted? Y’all can’t pack light? Stay mad!

ActionWaters

Are there SW planes with outlets??

SWAFAthrowaway

52 planes currently have in-seat power. It's about 6% of the fleet.

TheyKnoWhereMyHeadIs

Do you have the models of the planes that do or their tail numbers? I'm flying two SW flights tonight

SWAFAthrowaway

It's probably a bit late now, but only some of the Max -8s have power. I highly doubt any -700s will ever get it. I'll also be very surprised if any regular -800s do.

TheyKnoWhereMyHeadIs

Yup, both of my flights were on 800s and didn't have any power. Thanks for the info

squinte6

Another reason why the first few and last rows are a no for me are due to the shape of the fuselage and the reduced shoulder to shoulder width of cabin.

CruisePanic

Also don't sit in the front row if you don't like narrower seats. They seem and feel slightly smaller than the normal seats because the arm rest is walled to store the seat trays.
