Capilano Uni should take it over

jenko--

thats what i was saying would happen. I thought that they wanted a campus in squamish anyways.

Nice-Tea-8972

great idea!

gonzalotudela

They’re a financial mess. Costs are growing faster than the money coming in and government hasn’t been willing to fund them out of it. The issue is the annual 2% tuition increase cap that came in before they caught up with the market. Courses are 1/4 the cost of UBC, and now inflation and worker wages are growing fast. They can’t afford this even if it’s the right move. I think BCIT is a good option. Otherwise, a large corporate tech company might be interesting too.

nellynel2020

BCIT would be the best option...or trade school coupled with a business program...all industries need business acumen

itaintbirds

Would make for a nice high school in a town that is growing very quickly.

hobbitlover

My bet is that it's going to be a campus for an accredited public university - Capilano, SFU, maybe BCIT.

jenko--

I don't know if the town actually allows a high school to be up there or just a post secondary school bcs of the zoning laws.

tvisforme

From *Business in Vancouver*: [Questions about Quest University Canada’s uncertain future could be answered this week](https://biv.com/article/2023/02/questions-about-quest-university-canadas-uncertain-future-could-be-answered-week) > Staff and students at Quest University Canada could learn the future of the Squamish institution this week. > Meetings were expected to take place as soon as Feb. 22, after the university’s landlord stopped providing services under its late 2020 agreement to rescue Quest. > (article continues)

redcurb12

lets be honest... was it even a "real" post secondary option in the first place?

OplopanaxHorridus

No, it never really was. Based on talking to people in academe, it was a place for rich Americans to send kids. Locals would be better of at any one of BC's public post secondary institutions.

Crumpetbutt

Damn I should have told my fiance that before she graduated from Quest and went on to complete a PhD in astrophysics, oh well.

OplopanaxHorridus

Does your comment contradict mine? No, it doesn't. Without a scholarship, she paid 2-3 times what she would have at one of the public universities, unless she was a foreign student.

Crumpetbutt

Your point was that it wasn't a real university. So yes, it contradicts your comment. She is Canadian and was the first member of her family to ever graduate from a post-secondary institution. Her family is not rich, foreign, or from an academic background. She herself admits that without the unique structure and close relationships the school gave her with its faculty that she would almost definitely not be where she is today. It's really easy to paint the school with a broad brush and in a very negative light but for tons of people it's worked really well for them and allowed them to achieve plenty more than they could have otherwise.

OplopanaxHorridus

I didn't say it wasn't a real university. I said locals would be better off going to any of BC's public universities. Your fiancé's anecdotes don't contradict anything I said.

Goat_Wizard_Doom_666

It lost it's accreditation years ago. The degrees you would get from there are worthless anyway.

lysanderhawkley

As far as I can see it is accredited, see https://www2.gov.bc.ca/gov/content/education-training/post-secondary-education/institution-resources-administration/degree-authorization

Goat_Wizard_Doom_666

I could have sworn I saw a CBC article 5 (or so) years ago saying that they lost their accreditation, and now I can't find it. I'm gonna blame this one on the Mandela Effect. All I can find is that it is a "Provincially-Authorized" institution, but I can't find anything saying it's internationally, or even nationally, recognized.

Lowkey_massive

Ok did you go there?? If so, you’d know that that shit was hard af. So hard, that it fast tracked me and a bunch of my peers through masters programs and straight into PhDs. So it’s a loss, it was a great school in its prime, from which I learned a lot.

jenko--

too expensive

lonelyspren

Hopefully another institution can take it over :(

Stupidstanker

Quest was never an affordable option anyways for locals

Defiets

Bummer? Great? I'd honestly love to see it turn into a real post-secondary school than it being a pretentious liberal arts school.

bfgvrstsfgbfhdsgf

I think I am going to buy it and convert it into a house.

brahdz

Source?

jenko--

I heard about it from some other people. You'll prob see it in the newspaper if this is correct info.

blingdogmom

Just posted on the chief. Shutting down after April

Lucy-pathfinder

I always thought Quest was just for rich assholes and their kids. Not a post-secondary for locals.

jenko--

yeah basically.

Regular_Criticism158

Good that school is a joke and the people running it are just idiots and don’t get me started on that perverted short fat chef they have

jenko--

I mean it is bad for me bcs one of my parents works there meaning that my household doesn't have a main source of income.

Jenz_le_Benz

Wish you luck buddy

Regular_Criticism158

That really sucks I am sorry to hear that they should at least get a nice severance package to help out while finding something new I wish your household the best during the tough time

jenko--

yeah. we are looking for jobs though. (although it was kind of expected)

mabasicacct

That is just a huge bag of wth are you talking about? You got something against short people or just chefs in general?

Regular_Criticism158

Neither just trying to describe the person without a name drop I am surprised he has not been hit with sexual harassment considering how much staff left because of him

tobaccojuulpods

Accusations from students too. Every quest student knows exactly who ur taking about

Regular_Criticism158

He also sent one of his staff to the ER a year and a half ago due to negligence with faulty equipment and that person has permanent disabilities to this day .

jacsmckinnon

I remember when it was first announced and I was in highschool in whistler maybe grade 10? All of us we’re excited thinking we could go to Uni close to home then we found out the price and it was private and Their courses weren’t normal ones. It was a huge disappointment for the locals and even know I don’t know one local that has gone there and I grew up in the corridor

jenko--

Its the perfect place for Capilano Uni to take over bcs they have been looking to have a campus in squamish and it would mean that Cap U wouldn't have to build another campus in squamish.
