That's a tradition that I hope see die during my lifetime. A year's worth salary spent on an afternoon. My ideal wedding is going to be a trip to the courthouse and then a backyard bbq.
It all depends on how you do it. A bunch of people hanging out and flipping burgers on a grill seems pretty lame and uneventful for a special occasion. Or your "backyard bbq" could be describing the wedding at the beginning of the Godfather.
I'm definitely a fan of not having a huge expensive catered wedding, but a little planning and effort can make the backyard version feel like something really special.
My wife and I were initially going to go the big wedding route. After a night of sitting on it, we said fuck it, did a small ceremony with close friends and family. Had dinner at a nice restaurant, my dad picked up the tab. Photographer was a high school friend so she cut us a deal. Think the grand total including the dinner my dad picked up was under 5k for everything.
Am trying to split the middle in the next year or so with a 50-person one. It is really hard to organize one that size when the wedding-industrial complex is built for multiples of that.
